Piracy, of miners, is the lowest form of piracy. It requires the least imagination, and skills, both in character and in the tactical options needed. Given the extreme lack of brains that are required, this sub-profession, that I term "piwate-wanna-bee", should be encouraged to a more profitable form of piracy, such as gank of freighters in Hi-Sec, or somehow ripping off of a Dev Prototype death star main cannon. (I'd go after that.) To understand the premise of Psychological Warfare, we need go back no further than the American Revolution. When the colonials (early Americans) decided that they weren't going to take British greedy fingers any longer, their first course of action was dirty tricks to destabilize the enemy forces. To implement this, I suggest the following: Log off a combat character in heavily pirated areas. Have a npc corp alt watch for the lone marauding pirate. Try to have a Curse, or Pilgrim, and when you log back in, scramble and neutralize him. Tell him you are just holding him for a security check. 45 seconds later, put him in his pod. Scramble it, but don't kill it, laugh at him in a private message and send him on his way. The embarassment alone will enhance his movement to more valuable prey. Another possibly worthwhile idea, is that of the mining Q-SHIP. A hulk, armor tanked, with a plate on it, and webber scrambler and targeting disrupter. I also suggest smart bombs mounted in the highs to destroy drones, if he has any. Use rigs to make the armor tank fairly uber. Then drop your fleet on top of him. The last idea is, go bug the devs until they make logging back in, in space, a process that leaves your ship vulnerable for 2 minutes but easily locked, while your crew wakes your pilot from cold sleep. I would hope some of this might work, but I'm not too sure. Given that the Devs seem to want miners to always be prey to pirates (a process that any IRL engineer would scoff at. Pirates are poorly equipped jackamuffins, IRL), any tactics you come up with will eventualy be nerfed so pirates can sleep good at night. I would be pleased to hear your words on the subject. For the common man do I labor, for the innocent, I sweat my blood, and for the evil man, I reserve my curses. |

Good post. The pirate mentality escapes me, and I've been bullied in low-sec (ships blown up) and laughed at enough to realize junior high school (middle school) is still in session.
Having a miner alt makes me realize how much effort and training it takes to make an honest Isk that way. Having it ripped off by punks is infuriating.
Thanks for the advice, the pro-miner outpouring has been welcome.

i love killing miners! if they are in a position where i can pirate (note: pirate, not suicide gank) them, they are doing something wrong.
its *SO* rare then one can find a miner to kill a miner anyway...

I'm under the impression that corpmates can safely shoot someone that has stolen your ore. If that's true, all you need is a battleship, jump to where the thief is and shoot the bastard.
Or you could just have your friend fly a hauler instead. Whatever, the morale of the story is if you fly solo, you're fair meat. The only problem I have with pirates is the solo cloaking nanofag that can completely shut down any number of mining operations all by his lonesome. Way too imbalanced imo.

Jackamuffin... great word! But I have to agree with previous poster that if a miner is smart and not greedy, you really dont need to worry about pirates.

CVA have really stooped to a new level in regards their recruitment standards. Adapt or WoW, those are your options nubbles.
Piracy is a core part of this game, exploiting log on mechanics is pretty low. Smart miners don't get caught, do you?
Edit: Oh and if you tried your security check stuff on me you'd find your curse blown from the sky.

Kehmor is dead right on all accounts here.
And CVA does not condone the use of logon traps under any circumstance. CVA members posting such ideas undermines our integrity, RevJesu. Please remember who you represent when posting.

my favorate psywar against gate campers:
Warp in, see gate is camped. Say on local "hello can someone help me i am in belt 1 there are a lot of pirates around making it hard for me to mine and get money can ppl come clear it out?"
And 9 times out of 10, the campers immediately fly away.

Alternatively they scan the belt with one ship, leaving the rest on the gate. Any half-decent pirate would expect a trap at the very least. Violence isn't the answer, it is the question. The answer is yes. |

Noted. However, they can do it, it is considered a valid part of their existence.
I think its time to modify the pirate code. "Thou shalt not login from no-where like a sissy baby 3 year old to grab the candy of a weaker opponent."

Just to clear things up, the multiple edits in the op are the result of some internal discussion, hence why some of the replies don't make sense.
You can probably infer what was said from them, but the matter has now been sorted.
---
My own personal opinion as to the matter of pirates and griefing and meta gaming is that actually this is part of a much wider debate about exactly where MMOG's are going both in terms of market and future of the industry and psycological and social development of games.
This is just an interesting symptom of that (both the original content and in a study of how the edits and arguments over this post have developed, the "meta-interaction" between the various parties)

My education was indeed lacking. I've since learned a few things.
Here at CVA, we do not condone the use of Logoffski tactics. A waste of time, and simply distasteful. Other people do that, CVA will never do that. I have never done that. I never will, either.
Piracy, is a valid way of life, for pirates. I do not like characters that engage in it, but, as they are allowed and encouraged by the rules to do so, I will gladly buy any pirate a beer IRL, and hopefully laugh at myself for dying so noobishly. And.. maybe I get pointers on how not to die.

Reverend Jesu Marek, your retraction of the OP and rewrite as a civil gesture towards coexistence with a group of players you dislike does both yourself and your corp proud.
Griefers, suicide gankers, and campers all rub me the wrong way too. This is usually because almost all of these individuals lack courtesy towards their fellow players and have absolutely no regard for the impact their "fun" has on other players' game experience. Human psychology ftl
It boils down to John Gabriel's Greater Internet F***wad Theory. |
