I happen to think that local smack talk is a great tactic to use when engaged in PVP. It can be used to get the opponent to do something stupid or make mistakes. An enraged player will often stay in the fight longer than is safe for him and end up getting destroyed, or ignore everyone in the fight except the object of his ire making him/her very vulnerable. It has been my experience that the coolest head wins and/or survives with regards to PVP battle.
I know that some think of it as offensive and unnecessary but if you show some restraint with regards to foul language its perfectly legitimate. Any comments? Panty free and luvin' it! |

depends on what you consider to be smacktalk, having your oponent do something stupid in part of you what you where saying could be consider a nice tactic ( and quite effective in every game, was quite good at it in Renegade back in the day was a lovely game and really lent itself well to using the chat channel to do some damage ) abusing them and name calling l33t whining and all that ( what is most commonly ment by smacktalk ) is never okay IMHO. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

Actually used it as a tactic back when i lead a clan in some crap fps game , among other things. Works terrifically, though i kinda hated myself for doing it.
More you get people ****ed off at you, the more likely they are to make mistakes to take stupid risks. Kinda lame though....

As soon as somebody starts with that s**t just use the block function. If they're going to smacktalk then it's not like they've got anything worth listening to anyway.
Most smacktalk doesn't happen in PvP anyway. It happens when one side wants to fight but the other doesn't.
Serial smacktalkers need a dose of Extreme Korean Internet Cafe Justice. Or stabbing in the face, as it's known over here.

Wouldn't call it stupidity, I would call it over involvement ( or something else not as insulting ;) ) ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

Uhm...
Well i suppose that fact that its a tactic is a good enough excuse to do it now? :P
i don't really see how it would work on someone you don't know though. I mean, there are a couple who don't need to talk smack just to make me want to kill them really really badly, i just dislike them ingame and thats enough...
But i dont see how talking smack to a compleet stranger (ingame) will make him want to kill you more...unless hes really stupid i guess...

It's the exact same things as what Zombie did, you may not attack in "safe-areas" (empire/within sentry range) without loosing your ship.

Smacktalk if done properly is funny.
Smacktalk reduced to unintelligently insulting the other party, isn't.

I actually remember one incident back in October. I was in my scorpion and was chasing someone in an Apoc. He had been disrupting our mining op and killed 2 of our cruisers. He kept warping from planet to planet. While I followed best I could, I could not lock him before the invulnerability timer wore off.
After he warped away for the 5th time, he thought he lost me, and proceeded to smack talk in local. Incidently, this allowed me to finally catch up with him and I jammed & scrambled him. With the help of some mining cruisers that warped in (still had missle slots mounted) I killed him. --------------------------- (c) Copyright Saladin, 2005. My smacktalk ability far exceeds my PvP ability and from what I've seen everyone elses smacktalk ability is subpar to their PvP skills so what's the use really? Someone beating off to their own wording of the term 'carebear' some thirty times doesn't make me want to fight them, it makes me plan my hours to get around them.
Its a sad state of affairs all over and doesn't promote PvP but obsessive griefing as the ones losing their cool are likely to not ever regain it again but use the incident as justification for whatever they come up with to hassle the other guy.

hmm , indeed , don't read local, only usefull thing to do in local is count the number of enemy pilots. and maybe ask for gang.
if someone gets annoyed enough to do something stupid , they deserve to die.

Little tip for the internet - don't take things literally.

You also have to remember that someone might send in a harrasment petition when/if you smack talk. This can result in a warning or a ban for you, depending on what you say.

I guess role play smack is what is meant here. Talking about actually killing and stabbing someone is stupid yes. Jibing an enemy on their combat prowess if totally cool. I talk to a lot of peeps in TS and I love the diversity of the cultures and some of them can talk some really cool smack. Not mean but funny. I love it!

i instantly block those players that type out those "your mom ........" type comments. well you know the type
remember it's just characters typed up on a screen, so it ain't worth getting all emotional about, it's just easier to block sometimes.
I'd agree with smack talk kept in a role-player, in-character role.
Missles and Laser fire from your ship do better smack-talking than words typed out in local chat |

smack talk hmmm....
since I rarely smacktalk... well 'cept as an innocent bystander when lingustic losers who got beaten with the stupid stick open their holes in local for no reason cept to mumble some inane idiotic retarded supervillan banter.
This is when "The Riz" comes a callin'
"The Riz" The most electrifying miner in all of EVE! When you step into the smacktalk ring with The Riz you'll soon learn the meaning of pain.
