Im a new player, and I purchased a Tormentor for mining, and an Executioner for some fighting. How should I gear up for fighting? I have no idea what all those laser types are about. Thanks!

I wouldn't go anywhere with this ship exept maybe rats in 0,8-0,6 space (don't know havn't been there in a wile), fit it with 2 lasers shield booster and a cap relays. Good luck.

Well, its been a while :)
High: Dual light beams Med: Afterburner Low: Armor rep, cap relays
Shouldn't let you down vs low end NPC's.
For some fun hunting, go check out the Traumark Installation, Saminer system. Its 0.2 system, but you should manage that spawn point :) ----------------------------------------------

Yeah as Gaius said. Perhaps swap one cap relay for an overdrive in the low slot, to make sure you can outrun npcs.
General tactic is use radio crystals and orbit between 10-15km. Most low level npc's will have a hard time hitting you there.

As a new fighter you should always use medium beams with radio crystals to fight at distance. Avoid missile rats. The Punisher is the better fregate but the Executioner is more fun and still a good combat ship. Especially if you are able to use a microwarpdrive. I always preferred the Executioner and still fly it a lot when my Malediction isn't available.
For the medium slot use a shieldbooster or afterburner. It depends on the situation which module is better to use. For PvP and traveling use the microwarpdrive in any fregate.
Most Amarr ships want many cap relays and at least one heatsink in the low slots for PvE. Maybe you will need a powergrid boosting device to fit your modules/weapons in the beginning if you have a low leveled engineering skill.
There are two groups of lasers for all ship classes: beam and pulse lasers. Pulse is short range, better tracking, slightly more damage. Beams are long range. It's safe to snipe NPC from distance. The dual lasers in each group have lesser fitting requirements, need less cap, have less range and do less damage. I like dual weapons very much, others don't. Crystals will change the performance of your lasers. Rightclick/show info...
Most of the fun is finding your very own best setup for your skills. All forum advices can only be generalized.
Don't forget to train your learning skills in the beginning. They will help a lot to train all the other skills faster.

Thinking of lasers reminds me of ion beams from Homeworld and beamcannon from Freespace/FS2. Maybe Titans, being the massive capital ships they are, will have them? For those who don't know they're essentially enormous sustained beam weapons that are about as wide as an entire frigate
As far as fitting a frigate, usually you want to go for speed, and possibly distance since those two factors are what keep you alive. Most frigates aren't designed to take much of a beating.
