Now I understand that it would be a real pain in the buts for the grafic people to let us paint and detail our ships. But how hard would it be to just have the name posted someplace.
I (like most of you I'm guessing) am a sci-fi fan. In most of the shows I watch the names are writen some where on the ship for others to read. Personaly I think it would be nice if we could do it in this game.
Anyway I was woundering if anyone else liked this idea? And if so is there some sort of sugestion box we could shove this into?

Someone is an E&B refugee.
Anyways, the devs have been thinking about ship customization for months actually. With the introduction of the "Look At" feature, they have been putting some serious thought into it. What is preventing them right now is that they have to make sure it won't cause too much lag since there will be a lot of different looking ships and clients need to process them all. Just look at how long it takes to process a single portrait.

Well one thing that might help is just using some kind of dynamic color scale on the ship textures...
Anyone here ever play armored core? In that game you could customize the color of your mech by moving sliders around. It didn't require millions of textures, just a few textures, for the special patterns (like camoflauge), and the rest was just a color scale shading thing.
CCP could easily restrict certain colors like pink for example (I do NOT want to see a pink ship... if i see one single pink ship... I'm gone).
to prevent this, CCP could have a selection of tones to choose from... And then exclude the silly colors like hot pink...
Then each ship could have say... 4 different sections:
Main hull: This is the largest surface area of the ship. thus it's your main color.
Secondary hull: This is the bit that looks like its filling in the *****s between the main hull peices. This is easy to spot on a thorax for example.
Stylings: This would be the very minor detailing on the ship, can't give any easy toi describe examples.
Lighting: This selects the color of the lights from the windows and search lights.
Again if the selection is limited, and done by using shaders instead of textures (I think thats what they are called, my 3d knowledge is getting rusty these days). It should be very little trouble.
I'm sure that method is a lot faster as only four sets of 3 digits would really need to be sent to your client.
Anyway yeah i want to see custom colors more than decals. As cool as decals would be, custom Colors would be more interesting.
Imagine a blood red moa with black trim. Or a gunmetal grey thorax with with black or white trim. mmmmm... I love it.

Paintshop used to be a feature in Eve in the first stages of development (alpha). Perhaps one day it will be revived.

While paintshop would be a cool feature, theres alot of things i'd rather see implemented before it.
-New ships (More elite frigates, elite cruisers, destroyers, ect)
-More capturable stations (imho all station in 0.0 should be capturable)
-Jove space
-Everything else in Shiva
-A option on the damn autoscanner to show you shiptypes. I hate seeing a lone hostile on my scanner and having to waste time figuring out if I have the firepower to engage.

Didn't Hanns (or someone else from F-E) fly a sharkskinned Scorpion at one stage?I remember seeing a screenshot of it.

Yeah Hanns has done some excellent skins for ships. The Scorpion is a hard ship to do also, I've got a banded Scorpion that i still can't get quite right no matter how much i play with it.

the only problem with the custom skins that you can do now, os that EVERY ship of that class has the skin now :D all my thorax's are red and black, while all the moas i see are bright bright pink with a picture of 2 *** guys on em... i dont like moas, so i had to do something to make me laugh... (you thought moas were ugly before haha)

would be great to have a *careful blonde thinking* sticker on my craft, as those who know me will testify flying anywhere near my craft is highly dangerous and not to be encouraged!
