Anyone know where else I can find that picture? I'm trying to print it off without the print but that sight wont let me just do the picture itself.

Dang, that thing just expelled the equivelant of an entire industrial era worth of chemicals, aerosals, and carbon. Right now is probably not a good time for some of those people to be anywhere near the area even if they want to get back to their homes.
We're all screwed now.
Awesome pic btw.

Edited by: sesanti on 06/05/2008 14:53:46 I have just read the article in that link, the lightning is not from the Volcano per se but a heavy thunderstorm that was unleashed after the volcano turned live. I don't know if one thing could be related to the other, though.
Basically, the article begins with this, and it then proceeds to tell the story of the army's First Corporal who arrived to the city close to the place (10km away from the top). Now, with the city turned almost into a ghost town (as most of the ppl have left, only a hundred remains which refused to leave), he was left with the keys of the city's hospital - apparently ALL medical personal left town as well, and he has had some nurse training before. And he was also left in charge of the entire company due to some firefighting background and stuff.

Apparantly there is only thunder in Iceland when the vulcanos erupt as well, otherwise there isnŠt a warm front that is needed to create the clash between warm and cold air that starts thunderstorms. |

Speaking of primitive cultures, what's wrong with posting a picture in a picture format so it can be copied? |

I remember seeing an awesome weather satellite image taken during the Mt. St. Helen's eruption showing the shockwave passing through the atmosphere.
Lightning is more common with violent volcanic eruptions than you think, and it has nothing to do with weather conditions. The sheer volume of ash and debris generates a static electrical field.

Actually there is a theory out there that there is a fairly high water-content in the ejecta, as such when it's launched into the atmosphere the water freezes and the result is an "artificial" thunderstorm. IE, the ash has nothing to do with it. ______________________________________________ -You can never earn my respect, only lose it. It's given freely, and only grudgingly retracted when necessary. |
