I am starting the ball rolling on emigrating to the Sydney area, and would like to get some broad advice on what areas in Sydney are nice to live in, which are to be avoided, and what public transport in these areas/ in general is like for commuting.
Also, any other tips that may help would always be appreciated!
Thanks in advance

Always look behind you, ALWAYS, given their natural liking for the sewage system, the venom isn't just painful it's deadly. Although you're most likely to encounter them in a garden, given precisely how many venomous creatures there are in Australia, gardening is a pretty hardcore past-time.
Quote: Bites are dangerous and can cause serious illness or death. The venom appears to particularly affect primates (ie humans), whereas other mammals - such as cats and dogs - are relatively resistant. The male Sydney Funnel-web Spider is more dangerous than the female. This is because the toxic venom component that attacks the human and primate nervous system so severely is only present in male spiders. Initial symptoms after a bite include local pain, mouth numbness, vomiting, abdominal pain, sweating and salivation. Antivenom is available and no deaths have occurred since its introduction.

Even the cute animals are deadly. And never mind going for a dip in that nice, clear, blue ocean. Not with things like this or tiny nasties like these floating about. I recommend packing a mallet and some stout boots (which you should shake out every morning).

It is a big sprawling city, I would say live as close to your work as you can get so that you do not have to do over an hours commute each way. the public transport is absolutly terrible unless you are pretty close to the city or a train station. then it is only mildly inconvinent.
Housing also depends on your budget.
I always lived in some of the seedier places around Sydney Uni. Surry hills between the housing estate complexes as one example. tbh, Sydney is fine and resonably safe all over, just have good security on your house. There are few places where you don't want to end up on your own late at night, but unless you are deaing drugs or looking for trouble you wont end up in those places.
never had any problems with the spiders, but then i grew in the country where we had the snake that causes the most human fatalities in the world was in the reserve that bordered our property. eastern brown snake, we went through a lot of cats.
oh, and i havn't lived there for 4 years now. I moved to NZ then to Switzerland. I miss Sydney's food, it has some of the best international food in the world. Chinatown for lots of differnt asian food, Newtown for Thai, Marrikville for Greek. Also beer gardens and BBQs really are a way of life.
other tips, airconditioning, mossies and sunscreen. Oh and i hope you don't mind living allongside a few billion*****roaches.

There is a reason why Her Majesty sent only the worst of the worst convicts to Australia ... we needed someone to test the spiders on. Unfortunately, our Royal plan of training spiders to attack 'from behind' failed due to the spiders natural in-ability to play 'fetch' and a lack of response in the Pavlov test. We tried again with the snakes, the sharks, the jelly-fish and crocs with the same results. Alas, all of these experiments have come back to haunt us here in Royal Land. Thanks to the sharks and jelly-fish the aussies have extra talented swimmers, due to running away from the snakes and spiders the aussies have turned into exceptional runners and thanks to the predeliction for sexual harrasment of kangeroos and crocs, the aussies have turned into great tacklers which they utilise on the rugby pitch. The reason that we get many of them back in Royal Land is that these 'travellers' are the ones who are crap at running, swimming and playing rugby so they are sent to us to poison our genetic pool even further.
Dont emigrate unless you like being called a 'pom', dont mind being laughed at for your pasty skin, drink weak beer and calling the 'Water Closet' a dunny.

OZ is great good culture and relaxed atmosphere. Any particular reason you have choosen Sydney as your port of call? there are many other smaller better citys in terms of lifestyle and ease of transport etc.
Brisbane has the highest rate of growth in australia at the moment and is booming. You will never need pants in brisbane coz its nice and warm all year round minimum tempreture is like 25C but it does rain often due to tropical weather and is quite humid. Then again so is Sydney humid i mean. Citys like adelaide and perth are alot dryer and get cooler in teh winder only ever down to like 10-15C not extreem cold but cool. Summers get hotter as well up to 44C this susmmer just gone. They are quieter in terms of trafic and people. Perth has a great nightlife and adelaides is getting better.
Never spent much time in melbourne but its pretty good around the city never spent much time in any other part really so melbourne someone will ahve to fill you in about. Sydney is the largest but by no means the best. Need to look at what you want and the lifestyle you want.
Dont let the toehr scare ya about insects etc. Just coz we have like 7 of the top 10 deadliest snakes and spiers and 8 of the top 10 insects doesnt mean you see them at all unless ur in remote areas like where im from. Trap doors arnt the problem bird spiders are there freeking huge. Google em im too lazy to link a pic of one Freightering Service |

Sydney is very expensive to live and in my opinion, just a dirty dive. Seen one dirty grey dive in the world and you've seen them all.
Plenty of other places in Australia that are "Australian".
And you will be called, POHM. Not pom. (POHM) Prisoner of Her Majesty)
If you insist on Sydney, stay out of the western suburbs. Stay out of the suburbs of Lakemba and Redfern. Crap places to live and you will need a shotgun to keep your stuff being thieved.
My advice...Australia is the best damn country in the world to live in. Sydney however is the worst damn city.
Good Luck Pohm!

Hmm, so no-one has anything nice to say about Syndey? We only picked Sydney as my wife has lived there before and liked it (though 12 yrs ago for a year). I was hoping public transport would be good there, but one poster says it isn't... which is a concern.
We are open to moving to other places, Brisbane sounds like a good bet?

If you see a Koala, DO NOT TOUCH IT. It may be a cousin of the Koala, the Drop Bear. It's best to call wildlife services if you're ever unsure. |

here's a serious reply.
I'm an Aussie, and lived in Sydney for a while, and i can tell you where to avoid: pretty much everywhere i could afford... :P
anyway, here's the info:
1) STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM REDFERN!!!!! 2) See #1 3) the further west you go from the city itself, the rougher it gets. some nice areas are places like Willoughby, Double Bay, Mosman, Manly, Dee Why (awesome surfing at the last 2)
personally, i'd advise going to the Central Coast (Gosford/Great Lakes) or Newcastle, and commute to work. you'll have a far cheaper life, and have far nicer places to live in the bargain.
If you'd like to know more, contact me in-game.

I live in Canberra, 2 hours from Sydney. Great place to bring up a family tho may be a bit slow if your a party animal. Compared to other cities nightlife, Canberra is a tortoise in a hare race. Cleanest city in Aussie tho and plenty of space. No crowded urban building crap. Canberra is nestled in between National parks with snow on the hills in Winter and great Bushland to walk to.
I have 3 kangaroos that come down from the hill where I live every morning around 5am to feed. What other city is going to give you that?
I've lived in all the Major Cities (State/Territory)in Australia except Hobart. From those ive lived in Canberra suited me best.
Brisbane or Brissy as its known here is also a great place. Lots to do and the people have a great attitude to them (most of them anyway). Doesnt have the closed in grey feeling that Sydney and Melbourne give you and your right on the coast. Watch out for the storms tho and it can get bloody humid.
Outside of those 2, the only other one I would seriously consider is Perth, but its also becoming bloody expensive and you cant just nick over the the east coast whenever you feel like it. Its a 3 day straight drive by car. Ive done it on a motorbike. Great trip but never again. |

My advice is if u have a family...avoid the place like the ebola virus...as mentioned above brissy is the way to go (where i am now and where i grew up).
If u must live there read thepoints above about going west and refern.
Be very jeebious about trains at night..not so much the trains, but the stations when u get off.
Perth is a bloody fantastic place to live if ya make the good coin.
