I'm sure the flow of players for EVE ebbs and flows, however when I started 3 months ago, every Sunday the numbers consistently hit 40,000. In the past month, that has dropped. Numbers taken from eve-offline.net, may not be 100% accurate since I'm pulling it from data off the graph:
Mar-30: 41,442 Apr-06: 40,777 Apr-13: No data Apr-20: 39,913 Apr-27: 38,989 May-04: 36,482
I assume these numbers returning to normal after some promotion since I joined. I just find it interesting, Jita was almost managable yesterday which is why I looked. Or otherwise RL(tm) is catching up to people ;)

EVE's population goes up and down. A few months ago we were at the highest point we ever had, now it's going on the down cycle. I'm sure it'll go back to new hieghts soon.
P.S. just 2 years ago the average daily peak was about 25,000. So things are looking good overall. _______________

Also the coming weeks you'll probably notice a slight dip as GTA IV is out and will steal our attentions for a while.

I'd estimate that most of that 50% increase is due to second accounts for the same players.

I agree with the OP, according to the alltime user online graph ->Linkage eve was constantly growing, but stopped to grow since the beginning of 2008. Moreover it looks like the graph starts to go down last weeks.
I think it's the first effects of suicide ganking, it starts to take it's toll.
@Akita T: holidays usually get the user online number up, don't they ?

If you look more closely, you will see that between the beginning of this year and mid-february, there was a similar decline.
I don't think it's suicide ganking, it's probably general dissatisfaction / lag / bugs with premium content coupled with reduced marketing efforts (= not enough new players lured into playing while old ones leave all the time).

Now take 10,000 or so from that = isk farmers and divide whats left by 3-5 for the meta gaming side of the game through the use of multiple accounts. A vast majority of ppl have 2 accounts at least these days and lot of of ppl with many more than 2...you should get a closer number to the real player base hehe

Depends on the holiday type/length, and the exact point in the holiday I seriously doubt PCU was extremely high Dec 31 / Jan 1 for instance

I realise that there are a lot of RL activities, however there always are. I do not believe the public holidays will influence the numbers that much, since the data doesn't correlate (high numbers for the first, and low numbers for the second).
GTA4 may be a good example since I know a number of corp mates that are away to play it, however, it doesn't explain the weekend before.
I purposefully delayed this post since every Sunday I take an updated peek at the values, and it keeps decreasing.
<shrug> I just thought it was interesting, for the first time I've seen the numbers come down consistently week-on-week, on significantly (41,000 to 36,000 is signficant). Maybe it'll bounce straight back to 41k this weekend. Either that, or the general complaints in the forums the past few weeks with people threatening to leave is actually happening.
As I said, I've only been here 3/4 months so maybe these threats were always there. But if I just take the forums I've read, the complaints I've read, and correlate to numbers? Doesn't look great. I just wanted to bounce the question and get others opinions.

Your not taking Weather into account. During the winter months people are more likely to stay in doors and thus close to their computers as there isnt much to do outside that doesnt require an amature space suit. When summer roles around though people are out at the beach, in the woods camping, out picnicing and so forth.
GTA4 may be a good example since I know a number of corp mates that are away to play it, however, it doesn't explain the weekend before.
Wasnt the game leaked? If not, again remember the climate has shifted into the spring and summer months, people are going out more.

People leave and come back all the time to be honest. If people are genuinely leaving because of suicide ganking then CCP will either change something to get their customers back or those individuals will come back the moment they ***** and get the itch to play eve again (ive seen it before, you would be surprised how quickly people decide to come back after saying they will never return...)

The forums, like all games, only represent a small percentage of the player base. If you do a whole hearted search you will quickly discover there are hundreds of sites and forums deticated to EvE that people will frequent and may very well never come to the main forums. Why? Well consider the amount of crap threads and posts you see on average here, alot of people may simply get their news, topics and what not from else where. Many may simply not care what happens on the forums.
Responses in bold.

You will have to compare how it was at Mars-May previous years. If there was drops back then as well, it is most likely due to better weather. In other games it is hard to get raiding groups going at summer time. Sunny weather is mmorpg greatest enemy.

I'm seeing a disturbing trend.
Mar-30: 41,442 -2oC Low - 4oC High Apr-06: 40,777 4oC Low - 9oC High Apr-13: No data 2oC Low 7oC High Apr-20: 39,913 7oC Low 17oC High Apr-27: 38,989 4OC Low 17oC High May-04: 36,482 6OC Low 21oC High
This is related to the weather in my area. I'm sure the same increases can be seen for other places in the Northern Hemisphere.
What this means is that Global Warming is to blame for a decrease in the number of people playing EVE.
Or people actually like going outside when it's warm. _________________________________________________________ My Second EvE Video Club Seals Not Sandwichs

Take a look at the time around this year's holiday (Feb 7th) and there's a noticable drop in server numbers.

Every year for the last 3 years I have been around the number of logged in people have dropped when spring and summer approaches, only to increase when authumn and winter returns. So no, its not people quitting. Its just people finding something they have all forgotten: Real Life and.. 1. Long summers and lot of sun. 2. Grilling and beers!. 3. Beach life and girls in bikini!
The numbers will increase again when authumn approaches. So dont worry!

A bit of farce the summer excuse tbh, with eve's hardend fanbase, multiple accounting obsession culture, very few find themselfs away for anything longer then a week or more, vacations ect... certainly a patern iv'e noticed over the years anyway.
Public holidays you get more logging in, any time of the year summer or not, the spikes ofc come around the 'winter months' generaly content update time..
Imho, you could place the decline more on the numbers droping off with boredom till the update comes around again.. then people 'come back' (again) with a little new interest from new players trying the game. CCP multiple accounting promotions, new ventures in getting more subs, wingman ect... generaly come around the time of shiny new stuff.. boosting numbers.
Be interesting to know how many of players that the steam addittion bought in stuck around, ofc though.. in truth despite reasoning, or excuses for the number drop people are giving here... seen it before, different topic different day an awfull lot of the people posting reason here and now with come up with thousands of extra users when replying to 'ask' threads, jumping the playerbase by a 10 or 20 thousand each time, any time of the year

Edited by: Amastat on 05/05/2008 18:53:09 The temperature effect on population is very interesting - however not everyone on earth is in the same region, and EVE players are from allover the world. It would be a interesting study to map that out, but it may take some time.
It does not directly effect the EVE population in any way I'm sure... There is so many variables that effect the population. Holidays in particular have a dramatic effect of population levels. Christmas time I'm example has a huge impact, many of you who are in established corporations/alliances may notice a dramtic drop in activity - especially if your in a small corporation. Christmas times does havoc to small corporation activity levels usually :P
Usually in the summer in my experience, I have seen 2 summers while playing EVE - and this upcoming summer will be my third. Usually its a little busier in my experience - probably because school is off for the American playerbase. Spring time is also a bit busy at times because a lot of College students get off here too.
The effect of summer would not be as great on a game like EVE though because the players average age on a game like EVE is a bit higher then some other MMORPGS
*cough* World of Wacraft
WoW servers + summertime = crash crash crash crash crash crash crash crash

March was when Eve went up on Steam and they were given a 21 day trial client to distribute. This probably exposed a lot of people to Eve that had never heard of it. I know I joined in February and when the Steam trial came out newbie help was flooded with people trying it. I guess a lot left.
