I'm having lots of problems using drones when fighting rats. I often take losts and its really not fun to lose a 40k + drones to a 35k NPC... So I'm wondering, is there any experienced Drone user who could give me some tips when fighting NPC? I'm currently using a Thorax.

I'm using a thorax also i fly close to the npc's and if i don't let my blasters do the work i first let the npc's shoot at me and then let my drone's out that way the npc's will not atack my drone's but only my thorax.

Also not a good idea to mix heavy drones, because they fly at different speeds and arrive at the rat at different times which means the rats can attack the leading drone before the slower ones can get in range.......you want all your heavy drones to get to the rats at the same time and finnish it off as quickly as possible. You could try sending an acolyte drone past the rats and have it attack an asteriod, the rats will target it and follow mean while your ogres can get several good blows in before the acolyte is dead.......train some gun skill's :O)

I'm using a thorax too with 8x Ogres . From my experience i can tell that a good tactic is to deploy your drones when your ship is about 20-25km away from the target . This way , the drones will attack asap when you order them and not just moving to target . A good tactic also is to use wasps as they are faster and more agile :)

Against serpentis NPCs the easiest way is to use ogres, the most effective against NPCs and they can take a hit or two, but they're slow as hell, although using the following that doesn't matter much, and only release them when every NPC around is actively shooting at you. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

Edited by: Arthur Eld on 28/04/2004 14:11:43 NPC will activily change target to what they perceive as the highest threat now. I've been engaging NPC and taking a beating and release the drones on them and they ignore me to attack the drones. Drones can be a life saver against NPC as they tend to distract them from you.

Drones as they are now are infighthelpers.
So when you try to stay away and send your drones some of your enemys may lost you at a target and then he will hit your drones.
Last I made some fun with my Dominix, fittet with blasters and warping into my missiontargets waiting until I'm targeted and then launch my drones.
In a dozen fights against several ( up to 4 ) cruisers from 35 to 85 k I never lost one ( using berserkers and ogres with wasps as reserve ). And its without a meaning if one drone is first in combat or not. This will also happen with a bunch of ogres, cause when you do not send them on a spez. target, they will choose one by themselves and so they can attack several targets at once.
In normal I had to pay repair between 0 and 150 ISK.
Its really a question of timing.

Be daring, carry hammerheads/infiltrators, you can carry spares, so if you lose a couple you can send out another in their place, their quick large swarms do a fair amount of damage and you salvage a load from npc's anyway. As mentioned in previous post they do take fire for you so why not use em as a cheap alternative to your own ship repairs! =============================================

This thread deserves a sticky. Alot of people depend on drones and do not know how to use them properly.

Cause ship repairs are free, drones are not. Keeping 100k drones alive is worth quite a bit of armour damage. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

The thing is he's in a thorax not a Dominix, letting 85k rats target his ship first is not an option....so he probably want to keep a little distance between himself and the rats.....which means if hes using different drone's the fastest ones will get there first, at that point the rats gang up on the leading drones plus those few leading drones wont be able to do alot of damage by them selves but they will be taking everything the rats can throw at them..........by the time your ogres arrive , if they arrive (sometime they return to your ship if you send them to far), the faster drone's will be spent so your ogres are fighting by them selves
So what you have is a long battle with a lower damage over time, When what you want is a short battle with a high damge over time,
If you want to beat up on litte rats, then sure let them target your ship, but thorax's go pop pretty quick once there shields are gone. And if you have to warp out in a hurry it may mean leaving your drones behind....
Having wasps in reserve is good but a thorax can carry only 8 heavys = no reserve..
