The new season on the TV Documentary 'The Deadliest Catch' started in the UK tonight. For those not familiar with it, it follows the Alaskan Crab fishing fleets hunting King and Ophelia Crab in the Barent Sea.
It's well worth watching by the way.
Anyway, the thought hit me that there could be an Eve game idea in it that could be interesting to say the least. And no! I'm not talking about hunting space crabs, we all know that you just have to dock at a Gallente station to find those
After giving this some thought, this is what I have come up with.
1. There is a new type of anomaly which moves about Eve.
2.These anomalies follow a fixed course, and can be tracked, so their course can be plotted, thus leading to the first game addition. Pilots hunting them will need to work out which system they will hit next.
3. This anomaly is deadly to ships, causing massive damage to anything caught in it's path. However it's rich in something, be it minerals, material, or something completely new
4. To harvest the goodies, a pilot has to be able to work out it's course across a system, then lays out his string of pots, actually small harvesting/silo rigs, that have to be jettisoned into space ahead of the anomaly.
5. The catch being, whatever they are gathering is time sensitive, or the pots have a very limited life span, thus forcing the pilots to shoot them as close to it as possible, and then scoop them in quickly after it's passed
I'd also suggest a new ship type. The harvesting boat, won't be able to carry much in the way of weapons. But is able to make mini warps (say 1/10th of an AU), and not need a target destination. This would be needed to let a pilot string out his pots adequately to stand a chance of some of them catching the anomaly and scooping up what it has to offer.
Unlike any other form of harvesting/mining. Where you just park up against a roid, or stick up a POS then just drag the wealth in steadily. This is a form of mining that has the potential to be all or nothing. You string your pots out right and you have the potential to make a killing profit wise. You string your pots out wrong, and you get nothing.
That's the basic idea, I'm sure that it would need a lot of refining, but I hope it offers a different, and perhaps interesting new slant on mining/harvesting |
