I had my Kessie blasted away from under me last night doing a level 1 mission in Gallente space, and I was wondering if warping in and out of mission encounters is something that you need to do?
I thought that I should be able to complete the mission ("Smuggler Interception") ok in the Kestrel, seeing as I had two Regolith Extenders, four Std Launchers with Guristas Bloodclaws and Missile skills up to three.
I started really well, and killed all of the red dudes, but I started taking fire from somewhere else, and was in structure really quick. I was popped as I warped out.
Gutted!
Should I be warping out of the area to re-group when I get into armour, repairing, and then warping back in? Or do I go back with a Destroyer?
Also, I feel that I must have been doing something wrong to get popped on a level 1?

Hmmm.
To start off with - yes - warp out if you start taking to much damage, repair, recharge and come back.
Haven't use a Kestrel. Just Merlin's.
What I like to do with 3 medium slots is put on 1 shield extender, 1 shield booster and 1 afterburner.
A shield booster might have kept you from blowing up while you were trying to warp out.
If you are shield tanked - which you are - and you lose the shield - it's time to go.
For someone that is armor tanked ... the shield isn't that important - but for someone who is shield tanked it is.
One other thing though. You really need to know if you're taking fire where it's coming from.
If you've got a bunch of stuff turned on in your over view where you can't see the bottom of it - you need to adjust your overview setting so that you can see it.
Also, sort your overview on Distance. That way the targets closest to you show up at the top (if they're at the bottom hit it again).
One of the things that helps, is to learn which kinds of ships go with the various NPC Pirate names. So do a look on them. If you've got Cruisers, Destroyers or Fighters in the mix they can hurt you - so you really want to know which ones they are.
Train Missile Bombardment to get the range on your missiles up and long range targeting to increase your ability to lock at range. Then try and stay away from any clusters of enemies.

There is nothing wrong with warping out and back in to minimize damage.
Also set your ship resistances for the specific damage that the NPC's you are encountering. i.e Serpentis do Thermal and Kinetic damage so you would fit resistances for thermal and/or kinetic. This will limit the damage you receive and give you more time to destroy the NPC ships. |

Edited by: Toshiro GreyHawk on 07/05/2008 08:54:19 Here's a link to a discussion of Kestrel set ups.
Kestrel Fitting.
But I want to emphasize that your real problem here - was that you got blown up by someone you don't seem to have known was there. That should NEVER happen.
So the number one buff you need to make is to your situational awareness.

Ordon - Kestrel driver here. My loadout:
HIGH -- 4 x Malkuth plus appropriate missiles MID --- Medium Shield Extender ------- Invuln. Field I LOW --- 2 x MAPC
The MAPC are needed to get all the above powered up as grid is tight. But you need one of the Engineering ranks to level 4 to fit them. Have a look at the market for Micro Auxilliary Power Core and check the required skills tab.
I also carry 1 of each of the hardeners to swap with the Invuln. Field when I know what the target is going to be
My first Kestrel was:
HIGH - 3 x Standard Missile Launcher MID -- 1 x Small Shield Booster ------ 1 x Small Capacitor Battery LOW -- 2 x Power Diagnostic Unit
this doesn't need to skills to fit and you should be able to kit this out a coupple of days in.
My earliest noob mistake was not realising that I needed to use the Alt + F2 key to turn on the Booster / Invuln / Hardener.
But once you get the better loadout running you shouldn't have a problem with level 1 missions. I've done Worlds Collide about 8 times. Did lose a Kestrel once tho through carelessness - not warping when I was down to 20% shield.
Ratting in 0.5 to 0.8 sectors will get you a lot of loot that you can use for buying upgrades as well - those MAPC cost 180k apiece.
Convo me in game if you like.

Cheers guys! That feedback helped alot. Funnily enough, I went down the Shield Ext + Shield Booster route when I re-fitted my new Kessie. Even though you need to keep on top of activating it, it does give you a nice boost should you get low.
I used to do mainly ratting, and earned a decent return on it. Last night was one of my first proper jaunts into missioning, and it was a learning experience!
I think I will go back and finish this mission, and then go back into 0.5 ratting / salvage to get some extra kit.
Thanks again!

Another quick question!
My perception rating is a lame 6, as my character is a trader.
How much of a nerf is this to my combat performance?
Do I need to train perception?
Cheers,

Cheers,
Your attributes have NOTHING to do with your actual performance - they are ONLY effective in speeding up how long it takes you to learn a skill.
Each skill has two attributes that effect it.
Will Power and Perception are mostly found in ship and combat skills - Intelligence and Memory are more for things like Engineering and Electronics.
Six is really low unless you haven't trained any of the learning skills, in which case it's not that bad.
You can do Two Levels of Learning Skills. Once you've got a few skills to make some money with - do all the first level Learning Skills up to 4. If your a trader - you probably already have Empathy at 4 or 5 so don't worry about that. Most people slight it though.
It is best to have relatively balanced skills UNLESS you are creating a specialized character who is only going to do one thing. Even then ... being balanced is probably better as you can't change your mind without re-rolling the character. They don't have to all be the same but should be within a few points of each other - before any of the learning skills are added in.

If you're still new, and you're more interested in running missions than trading, you should consider rerolling. Trading skills can be useful but you need a decent amount of capital to take advantage of them. Trading by itself makes you no money, whereas running missions/manufacturing/mining does. You need money to make money.

By the way, the rat names in missions tell you their class.
-i = frigate (e.g. Centii, Pithi) -ior = destroyer (e.g. Centior, Pithior) -um = cruiser (e.g. Centum, Pithum) -atis = battlecruiser (e.g. Centatis, Pithatis) -us = battleship (e.g. Centus, Pithus)
Note that frigates and destroyers have the same size + symbol. Cruisers and battlecruisers also have the same size + symbol. You probably got eaten up by a destroyer and didn't realize it wasn't a frigate.

a couple of points
1) set up a "combat list" that only shows hostiles, drones, and other players ships, dont even let it show wrecks! occasionaly the overview can glitch and shove a new arivale to the bottom of the list even if that means under object that are XXX.Xx Au away from you. (you may sometimes need to flip "CO"s back on for some missions, but usualy its just one.)
1a) set up a version of that list that shows all ships and drones and wrecks when salvageing. haveing a Mission raider show up on you can be annoying.
2) never assume a "room" is cleared just because you killed everything, even if you have started looting and have cleared half or most of the wrecks.

I did the mission again last night in about 5 minutes, with a similarly setup Kessie as before. It was a piece of p*ss!
Basically, it was my own poor tactics that had caused the grief before. I had charged in like I was ratting in a belt, and the guns from the transports had come into range and flattened my ship.
Last night, I stayed on the edge of my range (which happened to be well out of their range), closing in until my missiles hit, and then turning and burning away from my targets, firing broadsides back at them, without getting hit at all.
Mission done. 200k isk reward, 100k more isk for bounty, and another 200k (at least) from the gear and salvage that I have yet to sell.
Sweet.
