I've just started playing it, I used to play GunZ a lot, this is basically the same thing and ALREADY THE DUAL SMG'S AND KATANA are ****ing me off just like in Gunz.
Still, I get to be a big stompy robot with drill-fists.

So far on the forums I see people complaining a bit about dual SMGs, personally I don't see what's so worrying about them.
I'm smashing people with Dual Rifles, and Shotgun+Sword.
If anyone is just starting out, the 1st item you should buy is a new booster...probably the dispenser. It'll make it easier to boost around.

Ok, i've played it a bit more now. You're right, Dual SMGs aren't that big a problem most of the time, it seems to be the "Newbie's choice" really but that tends to mean that they aren't very good so you can own them nicely.
I'm using a mostly light type mech for the mobility but my main weapon is a Cannon and my second are Drill-spear and Shotgun. I'm having a hard time with the shotgun though so I'm actually thinking of exchanging it for one of those healing guns.
So far I have seen no advantage to using the heavy parts for a seige type mech, what am I missing?

I'm no expert myself since I just recently started as well...but I'll give my insight.
Yea, Dual SMGs are so newbies can compete, I don't think it's much a problem since the weapon type plateaus, so experts can't really abuse it. But it makes someone new to the game competitive right away, I actually think it's kind of nice.
As for the shotgun, what type are you using? There's a shotgun that slows an enemy boost, that's a great pair with any melee weapon (forgot the name, read the description). It makes them easier to catch. I believe the spear + shotgun skill does a nice chunk of dmg as well, the sword + shotgun one does.
Heavy Mechs, yea there's not much reason to go Heavy as standard legs can carry the cannons well enough. It looks like it's more for the last stand NPC stuff where you would want the most HP you could get. Also the way the game works is that legs have different weight they can carry without incurring a speed penalty. But with boosters and such, that penalty isn't that severe, so you could get away with using things even if you are overweight.
I don't like the idea of a melee healer, it's really 2 different kinds of gameplay. The Melee guy is always jumping around boosting, trying to jump attack the enemy. The Healer is running away but hovering next to allies. I can't see you doing both effectively. If you want to heal and be a dragoon, just use heals in the 2nd slot...and Spear/X in the other hand. I like the shotgun, but you could try a shield to see if that's more your style.

This is the only game with stupid account creation, someone said previously it sucks so I guess its not just me. Well, I take that back... RF Online account creation page is equally as stupid.
I didn't have to enter a verification number it did it for me. Maybe it would help if I explained the system, and the updates.
there's NCSoft which is the publisher of numerous games as you could have imagined. There's a difference between having an NCSoft account, and a game account.
They might have simplified the process since you've last tried it. All I had to do was dl the Exteel thing from the website. It installs NCLauncher, which lets you dl any of the ncsoft games easily. After that, it sends you to the NCSoft/Exteel account page, where you have to create a game account.
1st put your ncsoft account info in, then pick a game acct and password. It wires up the account info for you. Then log into the game, and viola.

It's a good balance. I'll explain it a bit.
You have credits, online currency you get from playing the game.
NCCoin, currency you get through buying it.
Some items are bought with credits only, some with NCCoin only, some with either.
The balance of the items is such that NCCoin can get you some nice stuff early, but it's hardly uber. The better stuff is actually credit based.
So it's a good balance as to not upset either user. Also nccoin can be used for just to not waste credits early if those things can be bought for both credits or nccoin.
Also the starting suit isn't all that bad. Just the booster sucks, and that should be your 1st upgrade (you customize your robots through parts). I didn't realize this and bought a new suit ASAP, and wasted a big chunk of change.

I quite like the NC coin system actually, I'm enjoying the game immensely right now so I bought myself a new weapon with some NC coins. It only cost me $1 but I see that as my subscription fee really, I am enjoying their game afterall and the item wasn't ridiculously powerful(A version of what I was using that does more damage but overheats quicker, good AND Bad), I wouldn't "twink" my character like that, that just spoils people's fun (not that I think you really can in this game, it seems that the NC coin items AREN'T the best)
The thing I DON'T like is that there are so many skills but they all have to be bought constantly, MASSIVE turn-off for me.
I just played an EXCELLENT game of Team-DM, 3 mins to go, we're 100 points down. I'm leading the team at 14/7 K/D ratio when suddenly a bunch of enemies get the drop on me, NO WAY should I have survived but my Drill-spear was on a crit roll! (normally I complain at length about the shortcomings of the spear and why on earth I would voluntarily gimp my character by not using a sword) I plowed through them like a hot knife through butter, SIX kills, ending me on 20/7 and we won the match. I was happy
I'm level 9 so far, "Benco97" in game if anyone's interested.

Big Stompy Robots are win and my soul has weep bitter tears since the day the Battletech MMO was cancelled. That would of been epic on a while new scale. Set it during the Word of Blake stuff and have three factions. Word of Blake/Inner Sphere Mercs/Clanners.
Now I will die doomed to wander the earth for all time haunting the decedents of those who canceled it so that they know no rest. Damn freebirths and their dishonourable ways!

Actually you have it backwards. The consensus on the forums is that the Spear is overall better than the spear. They call the use of a spear, dragooning. Basically you jump around like you're on ***** and go for a quick airstrike animation as opposed to the long drawn out ground animation. It lets you me more mobile.
This is the best tactics for melee.
The problem with the sword is that it's based of combos to compete with the spear. But you then depend on longer animations since you're generally ground based when combo'd.
But as a weapon, the spear is better if you can handle the smaller target box.

Hmm, I find that the arcing swing of the sword combined with the stunning effect means the rest of the hits in the combo are almost certain to hit you if the first one lands, the second swing is coming before you've finished recoiling from the first, I've had no problem with other spear users but swords are a huge pain in my ass, they get that first swing on me and it's an 80% I'll die without being able to do anything back. Also, I wish there weren't holes in the skills, there are several skills which require double of one type of weapon (Dual shotguns, dual SMGs) but there are some weapons that there are no skills for which is a HUGE disadvantage for the user of those weapons, basically forcing anyone who wants to use skills into the same few setups. I would very much like to see skills for all the weapon-type combos. Still, the game is very fun!
