Edited by: Patch86 on 08/05/2008 17:51:35 I just had a thought. Theres a US Liquid Gallon, and theres an Imperial Gallon. And they're, like, different.
So when I say "My car gets 40 miles per gallon" and an American says "I get 20 miles per gallon", we're not really talking about the same thing, are we? And when Americans say "Petrol is $3 a gallon" and I say "Petrol is $10 a gallon", we're not buying the same amount of petrol, are we?
Bloody Commonwealth bloody United States bloody metric... ------

The solution is to take over the world, then you can measure in whatever units you want...even bananas. _______

I like the metric system but the root words need to change. I simply do not like liters or grams. I am fine with meters though. Also Horsepower> N/M

Edited by: Micheal Dietrich on 08/05/2008 18:17:03 Well US gallon is 3.79 litres (rounding up) Imperial gallon is 4.55 litres (rounding up)
.76 litre difference.'
Use my truck for instance. Say I average 15 miles to a gallon. A tank should get me 225 miles (15 gal tank) or 360 kilometers.
15 gal tank should be about 56.85 litres.
Now take your car and try to convert and we'll how close we are.

Try studing something like exercise physiology where professors will mix metric and English units within the same question and then make you give the answer in both metric and English units. It made all questions into 2.

Well if you go with litres and metres, the root words for you have changed.

I wouldn't worry. Auto manufacturer stated fuel efficiency bears so little resemblance to reality that you could use bananas to measure it and be fine.
Although the Gimli Glider is a good example of getting US/metric wrong (great story of what happens when a passenger jet becomes a 132 ton glider with no fuel).
Also, didn't NASA/ESA lose a Mars probe because they goofed on metric conversions?
For you and me the car in comparison is small potatoes.
