With credits going to; Zaknussem for pointing out Navitas needs a T2 version, Lisento Slaven for bringing up the idea of hunting Space Whales, and Max Godsnottlingson for bringing up a similar idea of collecting upon a moving spatial anomaly... I bring you, Storm Chasers!
*queues theme music*
Storm Chasing involves using a few new gadgets in order to collect particles being generated and released by a drifting gaseous cloud. The visual effect is a multicolored nebula with arcing lightning in and around the perimeter.
The Storms form randomly inside a system, drift along on solar winds or whatnot at a reasonable pace, and eventually dissipate. Considering the presence of Concord in High Sec, a Local warning will be posted when a Storm is brewing. For Low - 0.0 space, you won't get a warning unless someone spots a Storm on the horizon. The particles may not be for anything in particular, other than a Trade Good to be sold off. Or they may be the gases used in Boosters. Or maybe it's the energies of the lightning that are "bottled" and used for Cap Boosters. Not too sure on what good it'll do, but that can be hammered out later on.
The new gadgets involved could be:
1) A ship mounted module, similar to the Gas Extractors. These Collectors could be fitted onto any ship, and thus no one is required to have special equipment to interact with a Storm. Ships need only get within range of the cloud and begin gathering particles / energy.
2) A pilot could extrapolate the direction the Storm is headed, and place Gatherers in the path. These items could be Anchored in place, and left to ride out the Storm as it passes. Then they can be retrieved and the contents trekked off for whatever purpose.
3) Getting onto the Navitas and its brethren. The T2 variant will be a specially designed vessel for interacting with these Storms. They will have systems designed to interface with the Collectors to assist in performance. Could be extended range, increased output, decreased CPU/PG, or any number of things. These ships will also be better equipped to handle the stresses and dangers these Storms will present.
That's right, these Storms are dangerous. The lightning discharges are obviously EM/Thermal in nature. Any debris caught in the turbulence of the Storm could be considered Kinetic. And just to round things out, we'll make up something in there that Explodes. Point being, these things may not be quite like Warping into an asteroid field for some AFK mining. Ships that stray too close in the hopes of improved gathering, will get zapped with the ambient lightning. This will vary in damage based on severity of the Storm, distance between ship and cloud, accuracy of contact, etc. Ships that aren't prepared, or are ill-fitted could well go *Pop* if hit with a decent bolt. If ships happen to get caught in the path of the cloud, they could get wrapped up in the turbulence and further subjected to the debris and pressure variance buffeting their ship. If a ship happend to go down, the pod isn't entirely safe either. In fact, a pod being lighter and having smaller engines could be drawn into the cloud easier than the Cruiser it once occupied.
These Storms will initially register on the Onboard Scanner as an Anomaly, meaning any ship is already prepared to locate them. However, it's highly recommended you don't "Warp to 0" on these signals. The Storms could possibly pass "near" to a station, but the current shields will offer more than ample protection. This is to prevent week old Rookies from losing their life (so far) savings to the first passing Storm. Safe haven can be sought by approaching the closest station until it passes. This would also allow anyone to witness the Storm without having to risk their ship for a view. Like watching a thunderstorm from the living room windows.
So there you have it. Feel free to critique (nicely), and / or make suggestions. But please, no blatant flaming. It's getting old.

You been watching Stardust recently?
The idea in itself isn't half bad, and could be interesting, but I'm not sure about what the harvested result should be use for. Cap Boosters, like you say, is quite nice but surely you'd need it to fit into womething else. Cap boosters aren't that valuable really... |

I might have borrowed that bottled lightning idea a bit.
But I still think it's another alternative to Space Whales which people seem to dislike for the "alien" aspect. This way, it's an anomaly rather than a creature.
Could be the dust or whatever inside that's valuable. And it could be nothing more than a Trade Good you sell off. Or it could lead into another item CCP wants to add. People start gathering massive amounts of this dust, and then come to find out down the road it's used to make ultra mega uber leet... ???

I enjoy anything of this nature. I will say that it isn't 100% similar to the idea of Space Whales although I can see the reference as necessary and thank you for that.
I do not believe any new "anomaly" be it space whales or your storm should interfere with well-established and hardwired products on the market. It will definitely irritate current manufacturers but of course once people start getting "into" it, things will balance out as they should. One idea in my thread was that "space whale" material could be used for something in the future through ambulation or something else. The same could apply to these storms.
EVE is missing environmental interactions like this on an epic scale. Space whales (or any other hunt-able anomaly), storms of your description, herds of cows, whatever it may be - all are lacking in EVE. ---
Put in space whales!

Your really into the whole "Wild West Safari" theme with your suggestions!
Yeah, we could do a solar flare anomolie, which you have to have some kind of solar surfer to be able to safely ride it long enough as it travels through space. Any thing other than the specialty gear for harvesting these flairs would not be able to function (Electro magnetic interfearance with the targeting lock), The sweep outward from the sun, and help produce "Solar Cap boosters" same thing as a 800 cap booster, only at half the cargo space (more bang for the buck).

Solar flare might be another idea... but I don't know how far those travel. I think the idea was something to pursue and collect from.
Part of my idea was combining the other folks suggestions. That being something to hunt and something to hunt with. Your "solar surfer" was going to be the T2 version of the Mining frigates. They'd be geared for this job, and be better at it. But they wouldn't be the only ship that could, or it forces everyone to buy one to participate. Anyone can mount a Miner I, but only the Mining ships get bonuses to them.

Not everyone can mount Strip Miners or Covert Jump portal generators... *Logged the wrong character this is the one...* Or warp disruption field generators, or capital ship hull repairers.... etc. etc. Sone ships can only do certain things.
Only mining barges can do the ice mining thing right?

Alright... so make it so only these T2 ships can collect. Sounds fine to me.

Maybe the exotic particles/dust/gas could be used in some sort of Jovian based tech that could play a part once that race gets brought into play at some point. Ninja Salvaging ain't stealing

It would be nice to have a proper nebula we can interact with rather than those backdrops we have now. There would have to be aome minor things in respect to problems related to these or everybody will be farming them (think Macros).
Moderate tank necessary on the collector ship maybe since these are active storms and would undoubtedly cause some damage if you get too close.
Maybe some interaction is required to get the best collection rate. Make them visually dense or light depending on concentration of particles and to get the best harvest, you have to try to stay in the denser region. Of course this won't be easy since the turbulence from the storm is going to make navigating your ship more difficult and the higher the density, the higher the difficulty but at the bonus of a better reward.
Collectors put along the path? OK but these would have to be in the domain of jet cans, accessible to all but thief flagged, no secure versions. Also, maybe have some degreee of loss? These are floating in space and along comes a storm. Add % chances of destruction by the storm or it makes farming the storms too easy.

I like the idea for the bantan and stuff but what about our lonely tier 2 BC... poor mymidons... Advanced storm chasers... 0.0 storms would have more expensive ore/gas in them... :)... lol... could be interesting... but no need for BC 5... maybe at 3 or 4 but plz not 5.. lol
