I finally talked my friend into seriously trying eve; as in he will give it 2 months, if he can't find anything fun in two months, then he's done. So, what I was thinking was for him and I to duo in low sector. He would be starting from scratch (skills wise) and I will be using my 24 mil SP pvp character. I can fly anything under capitol size proficiently.
So, what would a good direction be for me to point him into, training wise? I was thinking, with the way characters are created now, he could probably have good support and gunnery skills and be able to fly a T1 cruiser within 2 weeks. Or maybe a 'ceptor in 2 weeks?
I fly Caldari frigate size vessels and anything larger is Amarr. (I'm a decent pilot, certainly not the best, but not shabby either)
What would be a good duo that would: 1) Be fun for him 2) Give us a remote chance at PvP success 3) Be logicial progression for him to train
Any suggestions please, and be specific if you have a duo suggestion, as in what each ships role would be.
Thanks,

let him tackle in a raptor or something, while you Snipe at good range with a gank fit BS,
should definately be fun for awhile,

Thanks Raspp.
Doesn't it take more skill to tackle then snipe? And know how to pick proper targets? I would think it would be me tackling and him sniping, maybe in a snipe cruiser (Moa?). He probably would have more fun doing the killing then locking target down. But certainly like the idea. Thanks again.

Depends, it takes skillpoints to snipe, it takes skills to tackle.

logistics - the scimitar is an excellent tackler already without training the logistics skill to higher regions ^^ - putting the gist back into logistics |

Blackbird -> Scorpion -> Falcon (EW 4TW) whatever you cant kill you can just run away from
Expect to die so fit accordingly. If your smart about engagements, you will start getting kills. Teach your friend about staying aligned, calling targets and scouting.
Keep it PVP. Once you develop a routine, cycle your areas so you dont get camped. Stay light and mobile.
Good luck and have fun.
P.S. Avoid the learning skills for now. That is a kiss of death for any new player, regardless of how inefficient that might sound. Once he is committed to EVE, he can start training them.

1-Get him in a rifter. 2-Get you in a rifter. 3-Shoot stuff rifter. 4-??? rifter. 5-PROFIT Rifter. ftw
Edit. if he doesnt want to fly around heaps of metal, or you cant, a punisher/retri/vengenace will do fine. Bit lacking on tackle, but meh: The retri makes up with insane damage. |

Whoops, forgot to mention. I would recommend you choose from either Harbinger, Curse, Zealot or Geddon.
Personal choice would be Curse. Combined with a Blackbird makes a lovely couple.

Fly a falcon, have him in a dps thorax. Duo can kill very big stuff with little risk.

Edited by: Deus Mallei on 09/05/2008 09:58:39 Depending on how your friends mentality is about new games I would recomend just leaving him alone for the first week. Exploring space, items, ships and skills in hiw own pace first week could be rewarding enough. Its quite a big step, I started 1+ month ago with a few friends as new as me and so far exploring the game the first weeks was very rewarding. Sure answer questions but dont try to hard to tell him everything the first days, he will be overwhelmed by information overload. A few things I like in my starting days. 1. Missions actually. They where a learning experience for some things. They get tedious quite fast though but progressed me a bit. 2. Ratting. Easy to make money, learning how to survive. Learning limits of his ship. 3. PvP obvisouly, even though I havent had any good experience in this field yet, i need to find some people to work with here when I get time. 4. How to make money, he needs to feel a progression. Dont give him ISK. 5. Tell him that loosing ships is normal, fly cheap.
Basicly, Be an advisor, dont run the game for him. Flying frigattes is great fun.
A bit of derailing on the OP, but since other people are better off telling good ship-combos I just wrote a reminder about how it is to be new :)

Well a ceptor in low sec might not be such a good idea as you will not be able to engage under gate fire.
I'd get him in an ecm ship and you a bs - maybe a blackbird with a buffer tank. This way he can jam and you can remote rep him. Of course it's usually better to just jam from outside sentry range but I'm not sure if low skills will allow him to be effective from this distance.
If anything it will show him the teamwork factor of eve and once he gets a couple succesful jams in he'll see that even a low sp player can cause some serious pain. Let him keep the loot and have him ransom. I guarantee he will not turn his back on eve :)
Obviously if you don't want to gate pirate a ceptor is the better choice though. But belts are, bar a few hotspots, usually empty so there will be long stretches of boring...

tell him rifter hands down, you get in an AF or ceptor or something similar. your not going to be gate camping are you.
Im amarr, but i know for a fact that when i see my friends who have lol sp in comparison to me they have just as much fun in a rifter as i do in a BS if not more.
within 2 monthes he could fly wolf jag and inties, if he lieks them the speed part anyway natural progression to HACS etc.
maybe even join an empire war corp, its much more forgiving than low sec, and a 2month char with -10 sec is going to get bored when he says so...how do i make isk get equipment etc.
I say empire war get him in a rifer get it tech 2 fitted and then learn some tech 2 frigs.
If he likes say do these learning skills etc then see how it goes.
but yeah as blke above said dont give him isk make him earn it otherwise when hes playing and your not the game will seem well grindy lol
good luck and if u wanna have some frogs fights 2 v 2 tech 1 fitted im sure we can meet up, hell ill pay for the ships.
msg me if your interested

If you want him to enjoy the game, show him what its all about, and do it within a couple of months, do what someone before me said, leave him to do his own exploring for a few days or a week, who says he will find PvP to be the most fun?
But lets say he is into PvP, and you want to form a duo of notorious criminals, all I can say is: Keep it simple (and small). Fly cheap frigs or cruisers, focus on getting PvP and ship-related skills, and by all that is holy to you, stay off the learning-skills at first. Chances are he'll only be put off by them, and he can always stop to train them if he decides to play more.
Thats pretty much it, do what is fun, whatever suits your whim at the moment. If you both end up losing 10 ships each in an hour while gasping for breath between fits of hysterical laughter; you win... Its a game and should be treated as such. Thanks for all the great responces. No, I wasn't going to suggest learning skills (LOL). To address a few things suggested: 1) No I do not want to get into pirating, but who knows, it may fit his mentality and I could always start another alt from scratch to use when I play with him. 2) The suggestion to let him do his own thing.....well, I know him and this is not his gig. We have played MMO's together for years and I know his likes, and it is blowing ppl up as soon as possible. When I mentioned a stealth bomber he really liked the sound of it, but I wont steer him towards that just yet. But for sure he would get a kick out of popping unsuspecting miners in belts. So he may train cloaking. If anyone ever played DAoC, he was the guy going into POC to pop PvE'ers whenever he could, as apposed to fighting PvP'er in NF.
Thanks for the offer Janth and I may just take you up on that in the next week or so...Look for my evemail.
Thanks again all,

Get him in a Drake.
The skill requirements couldn't be lower and it'll likely survive.
You should be a HAC/recon that can tackle so he can warp in and get in on the fun.
Or, you could try and get him in an interceptor and you bring some heavy DPS. - Support fixing the UI|Suggest Jita fixes|Compact logs |

one group setup i had amazing fun with was dual gank omens. We both did identical setups and always flew side by side. This was before the omen had its latest addition. To this day i still fly my gank omen and i can say i love it.
Another thing is given the amount of gallente/nano-droners and minie nano pilots going around we changed the fit so that i carried 2 webs and he carried a web and disrupt combo. Doesn't seem to effective but it worked for us. Chewed up quite a few ships before we ran into a curse and pilgrim group and well... yeah that didn't end well.
As far as getting something quick. Got Rifter. and maybe a rocket kestrel. switch up damage types so u guys can get more bang. plus rockets will rip drones a new butt and will give u more time to work on the main target rather than the pets.
