Edited by: Dirk Magnum on 09/05/2008 01:34:30 Most of them are camped on and off throughout the day. Some systems seem like they're permanently camped, but none of them actually are. The reason being is that nullsec gate camps in NPC nullsec aren't usually very profitable, and on some days they are just boring as hell. Anyone carrying expensive goods or flying a ship full of expensive modules knows better than to just jump into 0.0 without having at least some idea via scout or whatever about whats on the other side of the gate.
Some of the player-owned nullsec regions are only camped internally. The route in from Empire may be totally open most of the time. However the downside is that player owned nullsec has few if any stations that will let you dock, whereas NPC nullsec will have at least one every couple of systems, generally speaking. When Scalar Federation was losing control of lower Pure Blind, the route in from Placid was virtually always clear. I moved in there with a cargo expanded, cloaking, salvaging Thorax with over ten thousand rounds and just hung out in space ratting all day. Guristas rats have crap salvage but the bounties were alright. So that's always an option if you can find a quiet part of a contested player-owned region.

In my experience, the Stacmon gate in Ostingele often has a 6-ship+ camp on it. A lot of the big-name 'pirate systems' (like Egghelende, Amamake, Old Man Star) have a lot of pirates in but surprisingly few gatecamps, which was a refreshing belief first time round.
I've travelled through low-sec in Sinq Laison, Essence, Placid and Metropolis a reasonable bit and come to think of it, Ostingele is the only place I can think of that has any substantial gatecamp with any degree of regularity.

Edited by: Leora Nomen on 09/05/2008 10:57:20 As times goes on and pirate/pvp groups move around any heavily traveled area might get more or less of campers' attention. If you want to avoid camps then a scout is the only thing that can guarantee you would get into one.

Just use the map to show you "Number of ships destroyed in last hour / twenty four hours".
With a bit of patience you can work out when the choke points are quite.

Use your map to view activity levels - but a general rule of thumb is that the pipe-systems that link high-sec to low-sec are camped - the ones that you could call a 'major-highway' are often heavily camped.
Pipe-systems that connect 0.0 to high-sec are also very heavily camped, and the ones that connect low-sec to empire too. Syndicate for example the Chesiette > Reblier > 6-CZ49 pipe that leads from high sec, low sec, and 0.0 in 3 jumps is often camped because pilots will take it due to its convince, and unsuspecting carebears could be lead here from autopilot settings. ____________________

My first experience of a gate camp was at Lisbaetanne. I was podded by 4 pirates all with -9 to -10 security status. Checking the star map showed 0 destroyed ships in that system, so unfortunately I must have been their first victim.
When checking the player names on the Battleclinic kill boards, they also regularly camp the following systems. Adirain Aeschee Jovainnon
A couple of these systems are not bordering hi-sec but they get camped regularly because of the amount of traffic.
If you check the battleclinic kill board, you'll soon notice lo-sec systems that have a lot of transport ships destroyed, a likely indication of a gate camp!

I'd say that a safe bet would be that any border gate system that acts as an entrance to and from high sec, low sec or 0.0 is likely to be camped. They aren't always going to be of course, but there's a good chance. You should always check the map for ships and pods destroyed (but remember that it only updates every 30 or so minutes). Even better would be to get a friend to fly a small cheap ship to scout and make sure. Everything is easier when you've got other people to help (or a second account I suppose).

Doesn't mean they were "camping" the gate, especially since you said they were on a non-highsec gate. It's more likely that they were just waiting for their scout to give the all clear to jump or the signal that he had a target so they could jump and warp to him and you just happened to jump through. Wrong place at the wrong time for you.
Also, just because they've killed a lot of people in certain systems doesn't mean they camp the gates in those systems, it just means they spend a lot of time in those systems. Those systems you mentioned just happen to have a lot of missions in them as well...

Unfortunately, this just seems to tell me the population of they system. Jita and Amarr have tons of ships destroyed in the last hour...
Anyway, Thanks for all of the answers so far!

That's a tool to use in the low sec systems/pipes you plan to pass through. Jita and Amarr have tons of kills because of jihad's and/or wardec's. That style of fighting is completely different from pipe-camping. ____________________

All things being equal, a higher population means more people that are allowed to/inclined to blow each other up so this shouldn't come as a surprise! If you hover over one of the stars, you will get a little popup that includes the statistic you are measuring, so you can tell the difference between something like "Pilots in space: 302" and "Ships destroyed in last hour: 22".
So either you've accidentally selected the "colour start by" filter, or you've selected the right one and just didn't believe the figures that came in!
