Ok, I'm still doing lvl2 missions and just hearing horror stories about lvl3 missions. Not that I think it's a smart thing to do, but... is it possible to do lvl3 missions in a frigate? In *theory* it would be possible to outrun the cruise missiles and blast away from close orbit, but that's only theory. Anyone tried it?

The short answer is no, you need a cruiser to do the kill missions.

The long answer is yes :) I do all my level 3 missions in a Kestrel, they do get a bit hard at times and I have lost a few but if you have the right skills and tactics then it's very possible. Nul.

I've done level 3 missions in Frigates though I must say the step up in difficulty from level 2 to 3 is quite a big one.
I use a Merlin and a Kestrel depending on the mission and have managed to kill the 85k Merc Commander with the Merlin and the one that spawns right outside the station in the Kestrel, and plenty of the 20k to 30k mission types. I've lost one Kestrel so far and come awfully close to losing plenty of other times.
I am only new ( day um I think 12 since I started, so I don't have many skills ) but it's certainly doable. That being said I am sure I make more money doing level 2 missions simply because it's slow sneaking up in a frigate and running away lots.

I've been wondering myself lately. I've asked numerous people about this as a possibility and have always come back with the same answer. NO. It gives me some relief to see that it is doable. Perhaps some of you would be so kind as to post some tactics or setups newbies like me could use to counter or outrun missiles in lvl 3 kill missions. Many thanks.

For the missions where the enemy are only using light missiles ( like Thief+6 Bounty Hunter Rookies etc. ) I use the Merlin with 2x150s and 2 launchers. Basically sit at 20-25k range and just pick them off with the 150s. Once you have thinned a few out can actually get in closer and take them out with heavy ammo. There are plenty of level 3 missions that are basically just level 2 missions with more enemies (which IMO doesn't make them harder just longer since the level 2 missions are trivial for the most part ).
For the rest, the problem usually arises because they are able to fire heavies at you with a range of 45km or so maybe even 50km for a few. That is well outside the best range of the 150s so have to switch to the Kestrel then and engage with heavy missiles.
I have found Defender missiles quite useful on both ships depending on the situation as being hit by heavies and above in a Frigate hurts quite a lot.
The tactic for the most part is to sneak in to absolute max range and try to take out one ship then often to warp away to let shields recharge or in many cases to repair. Then repeat.
The hardest mission I have run into so far is actually the 3 Gurista Pirate Campers ( 2 Plunderers and one Ascriber ) where all three can engage at 50km which is about as far as the Kestrels max range. That one is real touch and go, though I did manage to do it for the loss of one Kestrel.
I've only been doing level 3 missions for a day or two so can't guarantee that I've seen all the missions templates but I've certainly seen quite a few including a couple of Important ones.
The key is to not get into a position where you can get overwhelmed by missiles as nothing will kill a frigate faster than multiple heavy missiles.
No guarantees my way is the best way or not and as I said I don't have many skills but it is possible to do the level 3 missions while you wait for those Cruiser skills to train up. As I said, probably not as finanically rewarding since it is slow doing them that way, but certainly a little more challenging.

Yup, i did a lvl3 kill missions last night, my BS and cruisers were too far away to collect so I brought myself a Kestrel, 4 launchers, small shield booster, MWD and a couple of cap relays and a bucket load of heavy missiles. The trick is to jump in at 60k, and keep well away.... It was a breeze!!!!!!!

I didnt think it was doable either until a friend told me about the pleasures of the kestrel.
I have lost 2 so far doing kill missions, all of them to upgraded npc:s that fire tech II heavy missiles, but with some tweaking even those should be doable. I have yet to try defenders, and there is always the rifters if you wanna outrun even cruise missiles...
Mercenary commanders and Schmidt are easy meat, warp in at 60, approach to locking range, set the mwd on autorepeat and set keep at range to the maximum that keeps them locked and just spam them with Thunderbolts and Havocs. Schmidts nasty mwd takes some tactics to deal with, but otherwise its pretty ok. And the mwd is basically sustainable forever with two power diagnostics in the lowslots.
With cruise missiles it should be even better. And if you do lose a Kestrel the total investment is 200k including ship and all gear. A mercenary commander mission pays that back at once.
And the feeling you get when you kill 4 cruisers with a cheap kestrel is quite nice.

Thanks for the tactics input. However i've only heard about Kestrels and other frigates capable of mounting some decent missiles. The problem is I'm using a Punisher and it has no missile bays. can anyone think of a tactic as a countermeasure for npc missiles? Any help or info would be appreciated.

You can not do level 3 kill missions in punisher.
Best frigate for level 3 is indeed kestrel. I have been doing missions in kestrel for quite sometime. Mind you it is a great frigate for new players, you barely need 400k (its not bare minimum of course, but if you started gallente ;P) of skill points including standard missile 3, launcher operations 3 and heavy missiles 1.
Heavy missiles are a must ū in short run cruise missiles arenĘt worth it since it will take you week training for just them. Not to mention price they carry with.
In long run of course they are best thing that ever happened to frigates (not counting MWD of course)
You warp in at 60 and open can of whoop ass. With Caldari frigate 3 and long range targeting 3 you donĘt even need to approach. Your range should be somewhere around 61k give or take some (both lock on and effective missile envelope, remember about weird launch angles though, they could determine if you hit or blow up short)
Oh yeah, buy Thunderbolts and Havocs BPCs ū more runs the merrier. They are very cheap and will save you heaps making your own missiles. Always maximise your damage with Thuds for shields and Havocs for Armor. DonĘt you let me see you use widow makers or some such.
If you aren't a noob - you probably wouldn't be readin this anyway so it doesn't matter what you could do instead of what I suggested ;P ---------------------- I make up with stupidity for the rest of my corporation.

I've done lev 3 kill missions in a Rifter, although I did lose it to 2 angel predators once, which is why you should always check ALL the npc missiles have exploded before turning your mwd off, lol ..:: Electro-shock therapy ::..

i cannot say i have had much luck with missile frigs - i have done some of the missions in my inq (amarr missile frig) because i was bored and wanted to try out something that wasnt expensive. But all i can say is TIME TIME TIME. they took sooooo long to die, admittedly im not the best frigate pilot but the missions took me forever to finish, missile spam.... warp away, missile spam warp away etc. My advice is to get into a nice cosy omen/maller with heavy beams and **** them for fun, takes half the time. (bs take even less time :) If u are after more of a challenge then missile frigs are great - but as a method of making money its just not efficient to me.
