Interesting article on videogame violence and GTA IV from uber-columnist Charlie Brooker - well it made me chuckle anyway...

JT ****es me off. He keeps maintaining that GTA and similar titles are being marketed to children (false). Eve though the video game industry voluntarily set up the ESRB rating system and instructed stores not to sell M title us under 17 years old. If GTA is being played by kids (which it really should not be). it's the parents or store's fault.
As I work in a video game store, I can assure you it's usually the parents. When a 5 year old kid wants to buy GTA IV, I say I cant sell it to him without his parents being there. Parents show up 5 min later and ignore my explanation of it's mature content.
TL;DR: If you don't want your kids to have access to M games, impose some goddamn discipline. The video game industry will not discipline them for you. ------------------------------

Let's face it.
You have to be ****** up already if you can't discern between killing in a game and killing in real life. __________________

what's the big deal with video games? they have ratings for the apathetical parent. what about books? i've never seen a book with any kind of parental rating. you can walk into a book store and unwittingly pick up Joys of Butt Sekz. will someone, please, think of the literate children.

Its far, far easyer to blame a faceless industry of being the great piped pipper of todays youth then to tell parents that electronic systems are no substitute for parenting. Fact of the matter is those in office know that if they went after those who really are to blame, IE parents, they would be out of office so fast their heads would be spinning. why? Because its taboo to tell someone they are a bad parent let alone tell an entire generation they are **** ups in raising the next generation.
This creates a situation that those in political power can use to remain in office or get into office by "crusading" for the common individual against the monsters that corrupt todays youth, which unfortunitely is the video game industry today, never mind magazines like playboy and hustler or slasher movies like the devils rejects or the always popular Jason and friday the thirteenth serise.
Funny thing though is that the current generation of players is already well underway in coming of age to vote and soon the earliest of us will be of age to enter office. when that happens its going to be very entertaining to see what happens on capital hill and other seats of power. Individuals like Jack Thompson, Joe Liberman and Hilliary Clinton will have a very hostile enviroment to do their thing in when it comes to games. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:
Players who post are like stars, there are bright ones and those who are dim.

Heh, yeah I was going to write to Metro about the ridiculous witch hunt over video games, but mine wouldn't have been anywhere near as comedy!
Oh, and Charlie Brooker is great. Anyone in the UK keep your eyes open for "Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe" coming back around on TV. Actually then I remembered the magic of Youtube, check this out:

It's yet another case of cause and effect being screwed up by politicians.
Like the fact that since Cannabis became less illegal more cannabis users with schizophrenia have been found. Ignoring how small the number is, ask yourself what you would do if you started hearing strange scary voices in your head? Would you maybe try to shut them up by getting drunk? Maybe other readily available calming drugs?
Likewise, if you have trouble controlling your temper you might turn to video games to try and get your anger out safely. In the end it fails and they blame the game for a problem you always had. ---- Infiniband can do more than just prevent lag |

Quote: Apparently this made me a tedious loser, because society decrees anyone who knows anything whatsoever about computers to be a boring idiot, while those possessing a similar level of nerd-knowledge of football or cinema or food are well-informed and sophisticated and sexually attractive and cool.
His got a damn good point there. People who review movies in empire magazine or food restraunts are always accepted. Yet people who know a lot about computers...and most likely contributing to society and the greater technological processes that drive most countries are always shunned. I mean tbh I think that someone who knows a lot about computers is much more valuable than some person who just knows a lot about movies.

This tripe about blaming video games for the youth problems of the day is yet another excuse for parents to do a rubbish job.
Manhunt is one of my fave all time games but because ONE kiddie bashed another kid with a hammer and he had the game (an 18 certificate btw) the game is banned in the UK now.
So because some gutter-trash family fails at being responsible for their kid, thousands of adults have some of their liberties taken away? Incredible.
Give violent games to everyone, the decent folk in society will treat them as the entertaining media they are meant to be and the tools will kill each other off as clearly they have no say in their own actions. __________________________________________

Many try to blame games for violence many try to defend them. I just say that constant gaming of FPS games will brainwash you just as television does. The effect works on our brain on a subconscious level. It alters our thinking in a way that trivializes violence. When you actually face real violence you cannot react to that you stand there as a zombie your head in a cloud (unless you have had training).
Talk about games like American Army. Crazy mind altering ****.
You can agree with me or not. But I still recommend that you turn off your television and start doing more. _________________________________ -be vary of the men behind the curtain-
