My ship got ganked in high sec on saturday. Nothing particulary worrying with regard to that-poo happens as they say but I'm curious as to why.
It was a badger mark 2-not valuable-full of faction mods-no-full of really valuable cargo-no. Am I wanted by anybody-I don't think so & it got blown up by a Brutix & all the cargo- low end ore like Trit & Isogen was destroyed.
Was it connected with the container in it that was labelled "expensive officer mods"- might have been but the container was empty- does a scan show up the title of the can- don't know.
I don't know if the Brutix got concorded for this- should have done & I hope the pirate enjoys the empty faction box he got- see you around cause I've got a tec2 drone with your name on it- funny that!!

Maybe ask the guy that shot you. He's probably going to be the only one that knows why he did it. Anything else is useless speculation. Where were you when he blooped you?

So maybe this is the counter grief for suicide gankers? Have a cheap inty with a secure can named "Faction Loot" or "Officer Mods" or even "Really rare stuff that people will want to kill me for!!!1111oneoneoneoneone" and then let them gank a 500k inty for nothing but the insurance pay out.
Not against suicide ganking or anything but I would find it funny if this did work.

Can't wait to try this out. I will probably name it "morphite" and put one unit of morphite inside.

Does it mean then that it is a good idea to always put valuable items into a container when shipping them?

Nope, scanners scan inside containers.

u ask why but yet ur cargo was full of faction gear, expensive or not the guy had like 20 seconds to decide to kill ur or not after scanning, not knowing the value of all the items didnt really matter as to suicide you probably cost him very little cos of insurance. Putting stuff in cans or mislabling them doesnt help, scanners do not show the name of the container but still show their content on results. _______________________________ [ 2007.06.07 21:07:22 ] FrankyWave > ransom me guys I am joining XElas !!! |

Hi Op!
It was me that ganked you on saturday.
It was the Domination Ballistic Deflection Field I was after, one of the modules you were carrying. Alas, it got destroyed, and I got about 3m isk of loot - I made a net loss on you :-) -- Ralara / Ralarina |

EDIT: for the record, no, I didn't see anything called "expensive officer loot" - all I saw on the scan was Small Secure Cargo Container I (and its contents, if any, were listed on the initial ship scan anyway) and it had no bearing on my targetting you or not.
EDIT EDIT: yes, I got concorded for it.
I have no hard feelings-it is just Eve. I did not think the domination was worth that much- not at least to me. I pulled it out of a hanger with a load of other bits & pieces. It teaches me a lesson though- I could have been flying something a lot bigger with faction mods & lost that & then it would have been worth your while. Thanks for the lesson in teaching me that high sec space is not really that safe. Fly safe & happy ganking-even if you loose sometime.

Heh, you win some and you lose some I guess. That aside, getting suicide ganked "just because" from time to time is a healthy thing as it keeps the bears from getting too complacent and it helps the rest of us stay on our toes when hauling back expensive mods from deep space.

You cant read- I had no faction gear- well not strictly true I had 1 domination field which accidentally got mixed in with some junk I was planning to recycle.

Heh thanks - actually, you're right, it wasn't worth it for me to attack you anyway.
As Angor pointed out, we only have a few seconds to decide whether or not to open fire. I must have mis-typed or had my contracts settings wrong because when it came up, it said it was selling for over 200m (which is why I opened fire). Afterwards, when I had time to think about it, I was like "lulwut?" - so really, you were only hauling around 20-30m of stuff max and shouldn't need to worry about it.
But, faction gear makes people's eyes light up so yeah, in the future, even if it's not worth much, a ganker could make the same mistake that I made and open fire over something worth 2-3 million isk. -- Ralara / Ralarina |

Not against suicide ganking or anything but I would find it funny if this did work.
There already is sorta a way to do this. Just haul cheap BPC's, from what I understand a scan won't reveal whether it's a Bpo or Bpc. Regardless, put about 5 random Bpc's in a Badger and set a 30 jump slowboat. After the 'sploding you get to harrangue them about their silliness and post it on teh fro-rums.

You'd think so -- but I spent 2 weekends fishing for kill rights. Had a shuttle, was hauling a couple of battleship BPCs I whipped up around the rens to jita pipe. Even orbited a gate at an obvious suicide campout to make sure they got a good scan. Nada. Not a bite.
Clearly my bait-fu is lacking. I've got some of those sub-1M dark blood passive armor resist thingies, maybe that plus a bunch of worthless ewar rat droppings will make people bite.

you don't even see the can, you see right through it and get complete inventory of the contents. the ganker in the op probably just shot the wrong target; it happens in conjested systems where you or your spotter get the wrong name for the target, or even as simple as the overview moves as another target comes on grid.
er... i mean... yeah, put your stuff in cans please so it all survives as one nice neat package... er, wait... cant be scanned.
edit: and no, i didn't read the whole thread until now. bite me :P

It's best not to use a hauler to move faction mods around in any quanity. Use a fast nano cruiser and fly manualy for transporting these around.

AFAIK putting mods in a container only effects the survivability of the mods. Instead of each mod getting a survival roll, only the shipping container gets one. Fail and all goes boom, succeed and all survives.

Can anybody confirm or deny this? I thought a container guaranteed survival.

as said u get a few seconds on afk haulers to decide if u gunna blow it or not, an understanding of the value of things is one way to succeed. Otherwise its fun pot luck. Hit the nail and u win otherwise well a small insurance payout nothing a level 4 mission wont fix. Plus some ratting for sec status - a brutix is probably the best choice pick a 0.5 system theres ship setups on how to. Make sure skills for module etc are fairly high
