Now I'm still somewhat new to solo piracy, and of course I need isk to fund bigger and better things. However, I hate running missions, and ninja ratting in 0.0 seems somewhat degrading...
So, I figure why not give gatecamping a spin? My thought is to use a battlecruiser as even though I can use BSs I really need to up my skills with them before I can feasibly do much more than die while at the helm.
I can fly amarr, caldari, and gallente battlecruisers (albeit none with any proficiency because I have been speccing in small ships), with most of my skills in gunnery based around hybrids.
So, should I be using the brutix (myrms drones would probably get popped real fast)? Or should I really try to use a battleship despite my lack of experience and SP with them?
Also, how should I be fitting my tank? Injected dual mar II with standard package of resist mods? and for guns would I use medium railguns so I don't have to move much from the spot? (I'm really not planning on taking anything bigger than a crappy cruiser here. :P best hope is for some indies)
As you can probably see, I'm just about clueless. Any helpful input will be appreciated - I just want to pirate right. 
edit: I lied, I can fly amarr, not minmatar bcs...

make sure you can an alt firt off or you will get blobbed and kill no matter what you are in
I would say a drake, cheap and can solo tank the sentries.
otherwise a abbadon, megatron.
If you have the skills for it tho; any races heavy dictor. nothing beats this

Solo piracy in low-sec can be tough, but solo gate camping in low-sec is even harder. If you're in a BC, even a decent T1 cruiser pilot can get you killed simply by keeping you scrammed on the gate while the sentries pound away. A BS is a better on gates (solo), but it also draws more unwanted attention from pirates and anti-pies alike.
You can do it, but I would suggest a "roaming" gate camp, as sitting in one system too long attracts gangs, especially once they notice you are solo.
As for tanking, test it first. Fit your ship and take a pot-shot at gate or station, and time how long you can take the heat. Then don't forget that is with no other pilots shooting at you.
Pick your targets carefully and keep you head up.

Myrm/drake/harbinger are all fine (dunno about hurricane, never flown one). For the love of god though, don't sit on a low sec gate without a scout... you might get away with it for about an hour before your chewed into little pieces. (or if you must... do it in placid please )

Can`t gatecamp "alone", if u do u will get A killed or B ur enemy simply jumps back. U also need a ship tanking gateguns anyway, so a BC will do fine.
If u really want to do solo piracy in lowsec, u need a ship fast enought to pass camps. If ur new try T2 frig piracy or cruisers. Anything above is usually on the killlist of every smaller gatecamp.
So best chance for solo piracy is find someone in a belt or on a planet. 
So for ur case, mb Ishkur is ideal (small ship hyrbid many drones). Also Myrm, Drake is ok, but u better get more Dps with the drake or u can`t kill any :P
ps: Anyone shooting ur myrm drones u can considder a noob, because he waste dps and u can kill him very easy. PvP (in empire) is shortrange, so use Blaster with most Dps.

Alright, thanks for some good tips so far. So I should be moving around by the looks of it, and I can understand why, because I personally try to see if I can scram someone on a gate if they are camping it.  And also using a drake wouldn't be too bad, because I'll need some missile skills for a few other ships I'll be flying soon. (Plus I've heard good things about them a while ago in a thread by tiller, and good things in general about their camping ability)

the other option if u want pvp is find a corp that does war decs. or find an industrial corp to war dec. Just as much fun and until u get into the t2 battlecruisers might be better off than solo sitting. If u must solo sit scout.

You can solo gate camp in either a plated gank cruiser or a semi tanked BC. All yah need is a Hauler on the other side as scout and sometime pickup loot ship.
