Last night I had the idea to come up with a site that was like TinyUrl except for eve. I've called it www.EVE-OOG.com for Eve Out of Game. This works a little different then TinyUrl since clicking the link will prompt the user to load the web page in browser default to the computer. Right now its a bit rough but I will be making more improvements to it over time. Looks good so far. A genius idea too, why didn't I think of it!? -----

Thanks a ton for the input. I was sort of wondering how TinyUrl did it. I came up with the idea also of adding another field to the database about if the page should stay loaded in the eve browser or open in the default browser. Edited by: Scetrov on 13/05/2008 21:13:51 Hmm, yeah perhaps have three options.
IGB Only - dosn't let you progress to the site using an OOG browser (explains reasons) OOG Only - launches the system default browser (current functionality - default) IGB or OOG - Just provides a link or redirect (Same way TinyURL et. al. works)
<edit> Just saw your edit, looking forward to it! </edit>

Is there an easy method built into PHP to go from number to base64 in PHP? When i try to convert for example 22 to base64 using something I found, it ended up coming out to a longer string. Ugh... I'll have it fixed within the next 12 hours. Be sure to keep a watch on this thread, I'll most likely be changing slightly how the urls are formatted. Plan on mining gneiss and spod all night and working on both of my sites. base64 manual page from PHP:
This encoding is designed to make binary data survive transport through transport layers that are not 8-bit clean, such as mail bodies.
Base64-encoded data takes about 33% more space than the original data.
You want base62, not base64.

Thanks for the reply! That helped a lot. I've got the code encoding and decoding from base 10 to 62 and then back again. I will be getting this implemented in the site over the next week and then adding Mod_Rewrite support. Thanks again to anyone who is providing helpful input!
This also means that urls are going to change once everything is in place if you have created any. I also see someone tried SQL Injection against the site. ;D No luck there Paco. One thing I have noticed is that the colour of the site in-game is too bright in comparison to the text, so it is difficult to read. Might just be me though. -----

I have some suggestions, if this project is still live and supported.
First, back to Base64 encoding, with current ?id=NNN you can't be sure your visitor want what he/she have entered. With Base64 it is as simple as obvious that you have a way to check user's input against reality.
Second, to the initial page. It's usage isn't obvious. What "browser tpe" means? It is page may work in OOG onlyor link intended to OOG use only? I suggest to change it to just a checkbox "Link can work in IGB". -- Thanks CCP for cu |

Ok so i didn't completely abandon this project. I actually got some motivation up and implimented the mod_rewrite and base 62. Urls should be much shorter and better now. I've just worked on the ingame portion of the site. Everything is readable now and no longer that horrible white text and bright gray. Along with that images aren't all over the place. After reading through your thread again i agree that this is probably a better way to do it. I should have this working pretty soon the way it should be and loading the the site in the correct browser. As it is now, i store the value of which type of link it is, but the url still loads in the computer's default browser.
