Why is local broken? Well in order to answer that we need to determine what it is, ingame, and an RP reason for it to exist, since, as we can see, it clearly does exist. Local is a cross system instantaneous communication band, operating on the principals outlined in the Faster Then Light Communication topic. So what exactly is it? Well here is a potential in game reason for local to exist as it does: FTL comms work on the principal of quantum entanglement using a mass of sensitive fluids. according to the article: Quote:
Ignoring the mathematical intricacies, the architecture of these routers is deceivingly simple. The first step of their manufacturing is the creation of the entangled quantum states. This is done by using superfluid 4-Helium, where essentially all the Helium atoms are entangled in a single quantum state due to Bose condensation. A droplet of such liquid 4-Helium is then carefully separated in two. From this point, the two droplets, and more specifically the Helium atoms in the droplets are intrinsically tangled. Each droplet is then placed in separate router box, that contain necessary mechanism to encode and decode bytestream into quantum state measurements performed on the atoms of the droplet. From that point on, these two routers are linked together, regardless of their separation. Thus a spaceship will usually buy a router pair from a network provider. One box will be placed in the spaceship, while the other one kept in the network providerĘs backbone, that will have connections to other routers, thus effectively forming a decentralized network, where messages can be routed across many routers and many providers. This architecture is similarly to the ancient Internet.
So each ship has its own entangled atoms used to communicate instantly by routing them through a routing system on a station or planet near where the ship was built. So how does local then work? if each ship is routed through widely scattered hubs? Simple: each time a ship jumps its FTL comm is reset due to the quantum turbulence of stargate jumping. When it reemerges its harmonic frequency is tuned in to that of the star due to the minute quantum state overlap between the helium atoms in the star and the entangled atoms in the hyperfluid solution. This frequency is detectable and unique to every star system, meaning that any ship in that star system is operating on the same unique harmonic frequency, not by choice, but because thats the way the device works.
So how does one leave local?
Well first there are several modules which would be created:
Quantum scrambler This device uses up cap and a mid-slot, it projects a field of exotic particles around the ship using a tiny open ended fissure in space. This removes you from every chat channel your in ( it greys out the type boxes and stops the window from updating on your end so you can't see them either)
So when the scrambler is activated you can't see anyone in local and no one in local can see you.

This device necessitates the use of alternative communication methods. there are two options for this: Short Ranged Signal Lantern this is a mid slot device that allows you to send short ranged communication with any ships on the grid with you. When the device is activated it opens another comm window that you can talk on with anyone in visual range. anyone in visual range of you gets a popup asking if you wish to join the channel, it auto-closes if you leave the grid. however you can't talk in it if you don't have a similar device. It cannot be encrypted and anyone can listen in if their within range. (visual effect is a flashing light on the hull) Long Range Laser Beacon Sends a signal down a narrow true vacuum field created by manipulating the ships warp drive. This allows system wide communication with another ship BUT both ships must be aligned towards each other and neither ship can move while the device is active. If you want to activate the device you must turn on the device, this creates a beacon to the other ship that is visible on the overview to anyone with the module installed, your friend then aligns to you and activates his device, at this point you get a window popup asking if you want to begin communication with [name of player] if so then both beacons vanish and a new comm channel opens allowing you to talk. this method is two way only, creating a communications bottleneck.
this system provides checks and balances to local, so anyone with enough desire to secrecy can hide without gimping the local chat to the point of uselessness. _________

You definitely win points for creativity, but I just have a hard time believing that a Covert Ops ship manufacturer would even install one of these FTL comms in a Covert Ops ship in the first place. Either that, or they would ship them with a built-in jammer.
Plus, how do you explain Corp chat? Wouldn't it be subject to the same quantum turbulence?
Don't get me wrong, I like your idea - it's well-thought and very creative. I just don't like the idea of needing a module to eliminate Local - I think you should simply be able to leave the channel, like you can leave most other channels, and have that change persist system-to-system and session-to-session (stored client-side).

Make it standard equipment that doesn't use up a slot and jams on a channel-by-channel basis and you have my /signed.

Your short ranged communication device is useless, I'll use Teamspeak.
Wouldn't mind being able to jam local, but dont think you can activate any modules while cloaked.

I like the general gist of the idea, but maybe make it so the cloaks interfere with the system where by your system is identified. Corp chat and all other channels would still work because the molecules are still entangled at the quantum level. The side effect of having the cloak/localjammer would be local would totally vanish, as would all other location based ones(ie. constellation). I'd approve it with my slight change. --- --- --- --- --- My views don't reflect those of my corporation, and definitely not those of my alliance as I don't have an alliance :p . |

well it might be standard equipment but you can't jam on a channel by channel basis, that kind of defeats the point.
as for why it would be installed on covert ops, well its THE ONLY way to communicate at FTL speeds. _________

The only "fixes" local chat needs are a smack filter and a language filter preferably with an auto-block function to shut the offender up for 30+ minutes.
And no we dont need any "reasons" for it to exits, its there live with it. ------------------------------------------------------- Sig was removed due to derogatory comments towards a group of people. -Karl Chroimcer
