im a hybrid specialist and never really bothered with missles and i was wondering realistically how much damage would a standard missle or rocket wack someone whos nano'ed? i know rockets have the range of a stubby 1 yr old but i figured given the speed and precission it would help. Over all im just looking for info on what i would be looking at?
Just wondering if i should even consider training missles and just train a secondary turret.

0 if you go fast enough... 4km sec is usually the barrier where damage stops :P ---------------------------------- Yes... this is my main. Extreme Troll Slayer...

Precisions can still do damage up to 5k reasonably IIRC so are useful against most nano ships unless they are ceptors or uberpimped.

if you fit against nanos e.g. raven with rigs to increase explosion velocity you can hurt them but they will just mwd away and warp.

With TNP V, Precision Lights have explosion velocity of 4500 m/s, so you can damage stuff up to 7500 m/s. Add a couple of explosion velocity rigs on and you can effectively damage HACs and unpimped inties.
And even pimped inties, if you get lucky... I laughed as my Caracal popped that polycarboned, faction-fit 12 km/s Ares.

Just like you specialize a nano ship to go as fast as possible, a precision-light missile boat can similarly specialize itself to hit and damage fast ships.
Hawk-Caracal-Cerberus Receive missile velocity bonuses.
Add velocity and explosion velocity rigs (a nano pilot can spend hundreds of millions - even billions to go fast - a tech 2 velocity rig isn't out of the question when it makes the difference between damaging the target or not).
Add velocity/explosion velocity implants (spend isk on the better implants since your opponent will have as well).
I've hit and damaged Crow's flying 9000 m/s with light precisions - but you have to specialize and spend some isk like your opponent did. Most anti-nano pilots don't specialize as much as nano-pilots and then complain about the results. __________________________________________________ Sup brosef! Hitting nanos really isn't the hard part, it's tackling them that's tricky.
Basically you need something that can tackle them, web them, and not die while the group kills them.
You typically need a nano hac/recon of your own or you have to blob them at a gate camp. Obviously nanos will run from a ballanced gang if they see a threat like a bunch of inties/EASs, a vaga, or huggin on scanner so what it really boils down to is you have to sneak up on them with a rapier or get them to stumble into a nasty gate camp.
A nanoed T2 cruiser is more or less immune to you unless you have a tackler worth at least 100 mil.

Edited by: Admiral Bosch on 14/05/2008 17:14:58 i figured since missles always hit and can chase nano's(ie standards). I was thinking of an assualt missle caracal for some anti nano work. Mainly anti inty / recon work. Is it possible or should i just let it go?
EDIT: BTW how much damage reduction would we be talking about as well? are we talking laughable damage or atleast decent?

The missiles that can hit often aren't threatening to the nano. A precision light might catch up to a vagabond but isn't a great concern. A ceptor can often outrun precision lights. Nanos like to use missiles against non nanos as there isn't any need to slow down and consider traversal.
To be even remotely effective against nanos a missile boat needs a setup that gimps it for everything else. Otherwise the nanos just watch a line of colored lights chase them then extinguish.
Most don't even try to use missiles for nanos. Instead, focus on bringing your own nanos, Huginns, and Rapiers to the party. Missiles shouldn't be the backbone of your pvp force.

Get over 3km/s and you'll avoid quite a bit of damage. Get over 4km/s and you'll avoid most damage. Going faster than 5km/s and you'll probably take no damage.
I've had stealth bombers try and gank my dictor. When I see them uncloak I hit the mwd. If they're not running t2 ammo and rigged specifically to hit fast ships then I can expect a cruise missile to do about 4-8 damage per hit. With gang bonuses and overloading I don't think I'd be touched.
I've tried the same with a nano Scimitar. At around 4km/s cruise missiles do very little damage. When orbiting heavies often don't have the flight time nor the punch to be threatening. A Cerebus is one of the few missile ships that can hurt. However a Cerebus itself doesn't nano very well.
Using missiles against a proper nano setup is generally a waste of time. There are places and a reason to use missiles but thats most often in missions and ratting.
