hi,
what do you think about armed secure containers. only small weapons to defend players mining in unsecure systems. like they can protect the owner from pirates.

Good Idea
How would you propose to keep a Corporation from placing thousands of these around their Player Owned Stations?
-This has been another (PLEASE VOTE: Good Idea, Pointless Brainstorm or Brainfart) from D3.

I think they are planning on implementing more deployable items, and I think sentry guns were one of them, so this would probably be what you want. Question is, how do you tell them who to shoot?

maybe with standings ? like attack standing under -3.0 and players which have the rights to control them could start a datalink to the gun and give commands like lock this ship and attack this ship if they are in a 30 min range to the gun. or so _________________________________ Ceo of Sinix INC. |

>< well i like this idea, u can mine and store stuff ;p >< maybe u can have only one of these types of cans within 5k of each other, that way u can have some to guard u and u couldnt just put thousands >< the other secures u can put as usual ;p >< they should only attack ppl that attack them or the ones that attack its owner/member of the gang if it isnt another gang member or corp member. and maybe if u lock someone and start shooting u can tell it to shoot as well (like the drones) or maybe it should just like a drone and u cna only control them up to a certain range. say like 50k or something? i think light or heavies should be th ones they use >< not cruises ><

Deployable sentry turrets are already being worked on for Shiva, to my knowledge.
As for what's to stop corps from deploying thousands of them around their stations? To my knowledge, nothing. If they want to spend the cost of several hundred battleships, and the hundred or so hours it will take to properly deploy a few thousand of those things, and then put up with the immense lag and pathing issues they will no doubt produce to deploy fixed structures that players will no doubt find ways to kite, and easily destroy, then more power to them. However, it would be a massive waste at any but the most critical of stations.
Now, a problem I can see with turrets would be gate camping with them. By deploying enough of them around a gate, they would have the potential to cause enough lag interference to prevent players from even being able to respond to a camped gate, before the deployed turrets had locked on them and destroyed them. About the only ways I could see to prevent that would be either shutting down turrets when the local server load got to high, or by preventing turrets from locking onto players until after they had finished loading the data (which would be a major programming pain).
Come to think of it, another way would be to have deployed turrets run their programming on a different computer than the node they are located in. That way they would have at least a semblance of the lag other players would experience. Might not work, however.

Edited by: Joe Redpawn on 02/07/2004 11:39:46 I think what would happen actually is that the sentry guns would be stressed out after a certain period and need to be picked up or they are destroyed. Like the mining drones when you abandon them after flying away a few kilometers. You have to pick them up or they start to decay and blow up.
Plus I am sure they thought of that for Player Killers who target innocent bystandards in certain sectors and want to keep the gates from being boobytrapped. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Joe Redpawn Order of Chivalry Corp, EVE | EVE Online Rocks

I think the solution was to have the sentry guns dependant upon a power/cpu supply i.e. from a station or another deployable structure, thereby limiting the amount that can be deployed.

I like the player owned sentry gun idea. They should make it have limited ammo that you have to supply and load into it. Powerful ammo that can only be used by a sentry gun. And make it have a time limit like the jettison cans. So you have to make good use of your time. Also make it to were you cant anchor another gun within 5km from another one so people cant put 50 or so of them around their ship.

As I understand it it would be quite difficult to have multiple sentury guns around a base:
I think to deploy objects you need control tower which has only so much cpu and power (although you may be able to get power generatores) and all the modles require cpu and power
Also I think all the modles require a certain amout of minerl mantiance
Rise of Valhalla is now recruiting. We are looking for players of any level of experience. Please contact me or SSJ2VEGETA |
