Even though Eve mainly revolves around combat, I have a couple of ideas that I think would make the boring chore of mining a bit more interesting.
First, asteroid belts would not be displayed in the HUD or context menu. We have to use our ship scanners to locate them, warp to them and bookmark them.
Second, ateriods would not be listed by ore type in the overview because they would contain more than one type of ore- similar to how each type of ore has more than one type of mineral. They would contain different ratios of two or more ores and our cargo holds would fill up with the same ratio of the same ores that are contained in the asteroid we're mining.
Survey scanners would be more useful for examining the ore ratios of asteroids to find the ones that contain mostly the ores we're looking for.
Imagine how fun that would be. If you find a valuable asteroid, nobody can just warp the belt and find it, they would have to find it like you did. Plus, pirates wouldn't be able to just warp in on top of you, they'd have to find your belt first.

Not new ideas, but good ones anyhow :)
I think there is a lot about minerals/ore and mining that needs changing. The whacked volume system for ores (all ores should be measured in m3 instead of their own special units). The tripling of the database footprint for ore with the addition od "special" higher yield ores is another problem - why wasn't this just done with skills I can't imagine
Mining and industry does need some love, agreed
Well, I've said my piece - wait, is that Veldspar over there? Woot! |

They are measured in m3, or fractions anyway. But I can see your point though. If they were all 1 m3/unit, it would certainly simplify things. We wouldn't have to bother with the math to normalize them to 1 m3. It's a good idea, I like it.

There are skills that increase refining efficiency but the idea here is about having different qualities of ore. I'd like to see this expanded. Lets have five qualities of ore ranging from 100% to 125% mineral yield. Finding a random asteroid with 125% quality ore hidden in an asteroid belt that not everyone knows about would be more exciting than finding "Dense Veldspare" in "Foves VI, Asteroid Belt 1".

Edited by: procurement specialist on 16/05/2008 17:00:39 this seems similar to the multiple levels of ore for sec status thing a while back. having trouble remembering the numbers but basically .8-1 has 10% ore, .7-.5 has 20% ore, 0-.4 has 40% ore, -.5 - 0 has 60% ore and < -.5 has 100% ore. Would mean that all ores are available everywhere (baring regional differences) but that mining in 0.0 is still more profitable. Also the amount of veld from a 100% veld ore would be much higher than is currently given to balance 0.0 veld vs 0.0 other ores.
it basically encourages all miners to skill for mining a lot of roids instead of high miners get veld crystals and 0.0 get crok/bis/ark as available. you could have explore sites with either massive roids of current sec status size or normal roids of the next size. There could even be a small number of ore from the next size seeded at normal belts that were "missed".
my biggest problem with having tons of different ores is the market buy order bloat trying to get large enough batches for refining. Not complaining but it would be odd to make arkonor 1m3 and taking 1600 units to refine for example.

Maybe they should have the occasional archeology or salvage site inside of them. Or at least have a chocolate center.
