Need some moral advice from you, the Eve Out of Pod.
Now that you have stopped laughing and/or spitting beer at your keyboard, here is my problem.
While walking along the steet, yours truely spotted a wallet in the middle of the pavement. Canceling my initial impulse to bring out my salvager on it, I picked it up and looked through it.
Contents - ú35 and a few bits of coinage, plus some first class stamps. I had been hoping for some ID to see whose it was if I knew them.... but alas - no.
What to do now - I have in front of me an old leather wallet and ú35 - found in the middle of the street. should I do the Eve thing and claim salvage rights

Yeah, take it to the cops. If nobody goes to them to retrieve it after 2 weeks (I believe) then you get to keep it. Do the right thing, you wont regret it.

Question: is the warm fuzzy feeling of handing the wallet in worth 35 quid?
Alternatively, apply Lebadevinski's Inequality to the set of Boromian fields, and expand out by Gregorinov's power series. The answer should then be obvious. |

Take it to the police station and hand it in. Honesty pays off in the long run.

I'll be the first to say, take it, keep it, enjoy it.... If you lost a wallet with ú35 in it, I seriously doubt that other person would hand it in, and if they did you wouldn't get it anyways, because you probably wouldn't go to the police station to check if it's found..
So keep the money, if there is no PROPER ID's in there, like bank cards, National Insurance cards etc, I don't see what the problem is, it would just be like finding ú35 rolling across the floor ------------------

This is a convincing arguement..... I wouldnt put it past the local Police to be quite honest....
And I am following the debate, just not posting much as I dont have much to say

In this country if you hand something into the police then after a certain time if it's not claimed you get to keep it. I don't know how it works where you are though.
Finding loose money is one thing as that can't realistically be traced to its owner. A wallet is different though and it seems most people here are able to see that difference.
When I was about 11 my brother and I found a wallet someone had dropped when out walking. We took it to the police and it was claimed the same day. Turned out it was a teenager who was here on holiday and that was his money he needed for the ferry fair home. He was seriously worried that he would be stuck/needing a rescue from relatives/whatever until we found it.
Yes he was a muppet to lose it in the first place, but people loose things. Accidents happen. I've managed to leave a mobile phone behind in a restaurant at least twice and I'm grateful that the staff were honest and held onto it until I came back for it. Maybe karma for the wallet is being repayed.

Take it, then gamble with it; you have nothing to lose anyway and it could make you a rich man. Please resize image to a maximum of 400 x 120, not exceeding 24000 bytes. If you would like further details please mail [email protected] ~Saint |

Take the money out of the wallet then place it in your own wallet. Then place your own wallet on the floor and kill whoever tries to recover their 35<insert pound symbol dealy>.

I lost a wallet with $500+ in local currency once. By the time I got home the wallet waited for me on the desk. Just to rob you of a happy end: minus the money
After that I felt entitled to keep that few hundred dollars worth mobile phone I found on the pavement a few months later. No remorse.

It really depend of your own ethics.
If there were identity papers in it, I'd give back at least that, since having them redone when you lost them is a real pain. now, about hte moeny, I suppose it's give it back, too, else I'd feel a bit guilty for months, but I'd still ask for a reward... ------------------------------------------

Best EVE answer yet!!!
But seriously, turn it in. At least here if you turn it you can claim the findings after two weeks. Here as in Virgina, USA.

No ID in the wallet? Spend it on something nice. Its extremely unlikely that the person who lost it has gone to the police and if he/she hasnt, the police will only keep it for themselves after 6 weeks. So, my advice to you, get a few beers in, buy a dvd and have a night off Eve. That way you wont think of salvaging anything else you see lying in the street.. you silly boy you

I love how people are saying that he should not turn it in because obviously the person wont bother recovering it... I mean if he wont bother recovering it than you'll get it back after two weeks anyway. I've found in total 4 wallets and two cheque books. 3 Wallets I got back after 2 weeks from my local police stations (one had about ú80 in) and the cheque books and the other wallet got recovered which was followed by the owners coming to my door and giving me a box of quality street or some other chocolates. Not too shabby imo as I would of spent the money on food anyway.

Who knows - maybe one of these days that 5th wallet of yours will have belonged to bill gates and he will invite you over to one of his mansions - and maybe even give you one of his mansions
That's certainly a lot better then him finding out you found and used his wallet, then you'd have a lawsuit big enough to make your head explode. ____________________

Edited by: kor anon on 15/05/2008 18:09:53 keep it, if it has no identification theres no way to trace it back to the owner. Im suspicious of the police as they'll be tempted to pocket it as much as you. Keep it buy some cheap shoes or a tank of petrol, of if your an american, lunch.
Btw if i found it id keep the money regardless of ident or not. harsh but idc

I'm moderately certain it doesn't work like that in the UK (Kirjava, you're UK, aren't you?). I'm pretty sure that once it ends up in the police lockers, it's never going to come back you're way. ------

Simple: Hand it in to the police. The following cack is what I'm basing this solution on:
1) My GF found a wallet with ú80 in it - she handed it in, and no-one claimed it so she got it back anyways = WIN
2) If you hand that wallet in, and the person DOES claim it, they may give you a small cut of it anyways = WIN
3) If that person gets their wallet back and one day finds YOUR wallet, they might hand that in and you get your money back = WIN
4a) Two wrongs don't make a right, so even if you think no-one would hand your wallet in, you should still hand in the one you found because it's the right and honest thing to do = WIN ON MORAL GROUNDS which in turn = BETTER WELLBEING 4b) Even if the cops share the money (unlikely, just look at point number 1), you've still done the right thing = BEAT THE BACON.
5) If there is a heaven, you're more likely to get into it if you hand the wallet in than if you don't = WIN FOR ETERNITY.
There.
