Any chance of a sticky?
some things that seem to be repeatedly mentioned on the forums. Ok these might not be your definitions but they are mine. please no flaming, these are for informational purposes.
griefer - Not to be mistaken for pirates. (not to say that a pirate can't be a griefer) Pirates usually do it for money. Someone who will kill for the hell of it, anyone, anytime. Usually goes after targets that can't shoot back to any real degree. so attacking all the frigates in a system while leaving the cruisers alone. Griefers are out to ruin other peoples games. They will destroy cans, harrass people with verbal abuse and generally make someone elses game unbearable.
ganker - Someone who will blow you apart for the hell of it. To be ganked is when you get jumped by several ships at the same time. Not to be mistaken for griefing a ganker won't just attack randomly, they tend to target a bit more specifically and aren't usually morons.
carebear - Someone who would be happier if we all fired blanks. They tend to complain alot and whine about things that are perfectly fair while not actually in there favour. If someone moans that they keep getting killed in 0.0 space, so it needs to be made safer they are either stupid or a carebear.
PvP - player v's player combat. When 2(or more) people agree to combat, or when someone is attacked by a PK'er and retaliates against them. PvP combat is very different to fighting NPC pirates. NPC's are far easier to kill and don't have the same range of abilities as a player.
PK'er - Player killer/pod killer. Someone who will attack and kill other players. This can be taken too far and become griefing.
safespot - A place that isen't easily reached. They are places that people can run to and hide. used by many to avoid getting attacked.
jet can/can - a container that is ejected from a ship when it jetisons something. These are classed by CCP as fair game to anyone. Just because you created it there is nothing stopping other people from taking things from it.
secure container - Basically the same as a jet can however it can be anchored in space using the anchoring skill and can have a password set on it so only the people with the password can take things from it.
clones - Basically another life. These are used when you get pod killed. You cna buy a clone that will cover your skill points gained. If you buy a clone that can keep 1.2mill skill points. That is the maximum that it can hold without loosing anything. skill points over that can be lost if you get killed.
pod killed - when a ship you are piloting is destroyed an escape pod is ejected. If this escape pod is destroyed. either deliberately or accidentally you are dead.
lab slots - A place were you can research blueprints to make them more efficient. You can reverse engineer items(I am told this doesn't work at the moment), and you can copy an item. These are very hard to get hold of in a main system. If you want one you will have to travel.
factory slots - A place were you can use blueprints to create new items. Some people will create for themselves others produce to sell.
concord - Ingame police force. They are deadly. They will shoot first and won't bother asking questions. If you annoy concord by performing a criminal act (it is amazingly easy to accidentaly annoy concord) they will destroy your ship. They have a lot more firepower than you. Concord will hunt you down and destroy you while you are in there space if you break the law. If concord blows you up. use your pod to get to a space station AND STAY THERE. If you launch straight away you will get blasted again. You must wait for at least 20 mins before concord will leave you alone and you must remain logged in.
NPC's - non-player characters otherwise known as rats. these are the computer controled pirates that live in the asteroid belts. If you go near them they will attack you. Destroying them will gain you a slight increase in security status and some money from there bounty.
security status - The rating that decides what you are. It runs from -10 (someone that kills alot and doesn't care about what happens. These people are almost always bad news) to +10 (People with +10 status are considered saints by concord. think of ned flanders and you will see what I mean)
sentry guns - These are usually found in high security space. They share the same principles as concord. however unlike concord they will not hunt you down, They will stay put and wait for you to come to them. Sentry guns pack a massive punch and can destroy even a battleship very quickly.

ore thief - Technically these don't exist(please don't flame these are based on CCP' s info) CCP don't class jet cans as belonging to anyone so if you use one to mine into anyone can take the ore that you mine. There is long running arguments on the boards as to if the ore has been stolen or not. However anyone that has seen a large craft float upto the can you have spent an hour filling and empty it will class it as stealing. However you CANNOT attack them. If you do so concord will destroy YOU. Its does happen. Some ore thieves/liberators do have morals though and don't steal from new people who are mining in frigates, Others aren't as nice and will take any ore they can get.
macros - these are little programs/scripts/utilities that can perform actions for you. Such as reloading your guns, moving ore about, or traveling for you. However using them is a banable offence. They seem harmless enough but CCP has decided that they are not allowed. No exeptions.
Some basic info that is missing from some FAQ's
Space. The different areas of space have different ratings 0.0 to 1.0. On a basic level all you need to know is that 1.0 -> 0.5 if you attack someone, or someone attacks you concord/sentry guns will join in and destroy whoever started the fight. Even if you are just battling for fun. they make no distiction between just messing about and serious trigger pumping fighting. 0.4 -> 0.1 concord don't patrol these areas. However there are still sentry guns and they will fire on the person that started it. In 0.0 anything goes. If they are bigger than you run. You can and probably will get blown up.
Spliting piles of goods. If you have 100 items of something and only want to move 50. Hold the shift button then drag and drop the item pile and it will put up a dialogue box asking how many you want to move.
Changing your character name/face. You can't. simple as that once your character is named and in game you are stuck with that name and face. If you really want to change it you will have to delete the character and start again.
Other races ships. Yes you can fly other races ships. Just buy the skill and train it. Any ships can be flown by anyone regardless of race, as long as you have the correct skills.
Screenshots. You have to be in full screen mode to take screen shots. Then you simply press the ' print screen' button. The image is saved into the program files/ccp/eve/screenshots directory.
Swaping skills. If you swap skill training you don't loose any skill points. None. So it is perfectly safe to train for gunnery lvl5 and change you mind to train drones lvl2 any points that you have already got towards gunnery lvl5 will be kept and you can continue training later.
Destroying containers. the standard jet cans can be destroyed quite easily. They aren't very tough and even a low level frigate can blow one up. As for the secure cans that float about. You can destroy them but its really not worth the time. They have an amazingly high number of hit points even pounding on one with a battleship for an hour is not garanteed to blow one up. However be aware that attacking someone elses cans is classed as an attack on that person. So concord and any sentry guns can return the favor to you.
Chaos server. This is a test server. It has the latest version of the game on. However the latest version may not be the current release version hence the name test. Updates/ upgrades get tested on chaos to try to minimise any problems when it get put onto the live servers.
