It's going to be a long long while. It will require a complete overhaul of the server software among many other things. My guess is that it won't happen this year, maybe winter 2009?

Don't hold your breath, in fact, you'd probably do better to forget about it happening and when (if) it does just be surprised.
Counting the days will only make the time go by that much slower.

The hamsters need to build up more muscle mass. Steroids need time to work.

well actually BUILDING the thing wouldn't take long, if the datacenter is in place, probably a month or so, then some tests to see if it all runs perfectly, cabling and all, so prob 2 months to actually "build" the supercomputer, the problem as stated before me is the serversoftware to run on it, which basicly has to be written from scratch to benefit from the infrastructure....
So ye... don't hold your breath

Edited by: Amastat on 15/05/2008 18:25:26 Do we have any idea if it's Nivida, Microsoft, or IBM making and supplying this supercomputer? I imagine this may probably be custom made, since pretty much every super computer in existence has been used for research - not video games.
Do we know what speeds this thing will be capable of clocking?
How big is it?
What is CCP's A/C & Power Bills going to be to run this baby? ____________________

I believe the cluster will be the same hardware as it is now. They are merely going to switch out the ethernet for infiniband.
So it's AMD cores with Microsoft Windows 2003(They might just upgrade to 2008, that would rock)

Hmm i guess maybe I misread this post then. I sounded to me like they were actually getting a entirely new computer, a super computer to replace the server, or most of it.
Going from Ethernet to Infiniband sounds more like a simple upgrade IMO - hardly a super computer. ____________________

your posts hurt my CS degree. it started crying right about when you asked if nvidia is making a server-side supercomputer.
that last one really got it though.

at the 2006 fanfest(note:year before last) we were told the new super computer is being built with IBM and MS(probably Nvidia too, though I didn't hear that in the lecture)
I am hoping that CCP are a long way into this project
