That's a little too vague to say one way or the other.
What ores are you comparing? Arkanor mined by a Probe in 0.0 vs. Omber mined by a Thorax in 0.4? Or Hebdergite in 0.0 vs. Jaspet in 0.4?
Are you using a hauler? I.e. Mining to a jet can for pickup by a hauler? Or just using your cargo hold and running back to station everytime it is filled?
How far is it to a station? Are you in 0.0 20j from the nearest station or on a system with a station? Makes a BIG difference.
Do you have guards to help you out in 0.0? In a Probe you will have to run everytime an NPC spawn shows. In 0.4 you have a good chance at defending yourself in the Thorax with drones and/or a gun or two mounted.

i made 24m mining bistot in 0.0 in a blackbird with 3 miner 2's in only 3 days.... and in those 3 days i wasent mining even half the day. my hauler would come pick up the giant secures and try to run the blockades and he got through even though he got shot at in his mk5 we split it 50/50 and i ended up getting 12.4m :) and yes we did have to run from rats but wasent that hard almost lost my blackbird from a bug.... my hauler was 30km away and they spawned according to him and they were about 10km from me. i used me mwd and warped out with bout 40% armor left. anyway... i would say the probe ive mined in a probe before.... made about 3 refines of bistot in 2 days so yes i would say the probe

Well, In my thorax when I solo mine, I go for a minimum of kernite usualy in .4 space...
If I do it with everything I got, even without miner II's I average about 1-2 million ISK worth of minerals an hour.
Even in a megathron with all 7 miner II's and a full compliment of harvies, I don't think I could do better if all I did was mine in high spec chewing on crap rocks.
If I had a megathron I'd go for even better ore than I do now and still make more.
So truth be told, mining in high sec in a Battleship is a waste of time... mining in lower sec isn't at all dangerous IMHO... I've been doing it for ages and never lost a single can of ore, or a single ship.
I've lost a few drones to NPC's while I was AFK of course taking a pee or something. but thats to be expected.
To be honest though, I only mine now for the truly sweet rocks.
In the end it all depends on time Versus payment when it comes to strip mining in general.
What most people call strip mining is the high sec nonsense... in low sec, strip mining is a good idea if you can pull it off, you'll make a LOT more ISK per hour.
I mean seriously the only reason I don't have 100 million ISK laying around is I find Mining to be so boring... so I'd rather mine occasionaly for the good stuff with a bit of risk than mine the moderate stuff constantly for 1-2 Million ISK an hour.
But if I have a need for cash, I either hunt cruiser rats as fast as I can and look for rare drops to sell, then recycle the lesser junk. Or I mine at LEAST kernite at as fast a pace as I can for about the same amount of ISK per hour on average.
Honestly I tend to prefer the hunting method though, In .4 space or lower you get spawns worth a total of about 30K - 100K+ ISK so you average about a million an hour when it's slow, not counting loot.
Even if you need to spend ISK on ammo, it beats mining.
The best hunting I had so far since I came back was when I accidentaly left my shield booster on while I was on the phone. When the 3 40K cruiser rats spawned in I only had 25% cap, and since I had a MWD fitted that wasn't much cap to work with, and the shiled wasn't much to make a difference.
so I actually took some heavy armor damage trying to conserve my cap so I could keep my guns going. I managed to wipe out the entire pack including the 6 NPC frigates with about 10K each in about 10 mintes.
I had to use the asteroids intelligently as cover against the missiles.
When it was all over I had made somewhere in the neighborhood of 100-200K for that one fight, and found a few less common modules with a few hundredK to a million Each on the trade channel.
Good stuff when that happens :)
Although the cost to repair my ship was about equal to my bounty payment, the experience of the fight was so much fun I would gladly pay it again to do that again :)

If you know the right places to go in 0.0 you can earn 5-10 million an hour ninja mining and 10-15 million an hour jetcan mining with a cruiser. Without worrying about rats.-

Sometimes its not about the ammount of money you earn. Its about the minerals you mine. Cash doesnt instantly turn into minerals you know. Somebody has to mine the basic stuff.
