Edited by: csebal on 16/05/2008 08:49:05 Hello there!
I have a question to the candidates out there: What's your opinion about players playing this game in solo mode.
I categorize these people in two groups:
1) is the group who really plays solo with little or no interaction with others.
2) is the group who play more or less cooperatively, but stick to NPC corporations.
What's your opinion about the issue? Is playing in NPC corporations good or bad? Should CCP maybe - once again - allow you to join ANY npc corporation you have a high enough standing with?
edit: I purposefully didnt ask about group 1, as i just dont think it makes sense to play an MMOG that way, so unless you feel like explaining how thats logical, go ahead but i dont expect you to reflect on that group :) My post does not represent the general or official opinion of anyone else besides me. No matter what YOU believe. Phear the arrows of the HUNs >>----> |

My (probably biased) opinion is that solo playing is a valid playstyle even in an MMO. I see no issues with it at all. It depends on the personality of the player, and you can either cater to their playstyle or lose them alltogether. You cannot force them to play the game in a way they do not want to play it, they would just quit. I personally have quit a few MMOs in the past because I was forced to play with groups in the endgame and there was no way to progress through solo playstyle.
I hover between group 1 and 2, sometimes I play long times just grinding agent missions without ever dealing with another person, and then I spend a month or so with a corp or the people in one of the many secret channels of Eve (you thought NPC Corp / solo players never organized, think again ).
Why people play in group 1? Because Eve is a nice big game that continues forever and because singleplayer space games like X3 are boring. And somehow it gives more of a sense of accomplishment to have something on a server that you do not control than to have it on your harddrive. People played Diablo 2 on battle.net too, even though the singleplayer mode is identical. Probably because they can trade stuff with other people. ---

solo gaming is one way to experience the game.
it is neither "good" or "bad" its your personals choice and we should allow this to happen.
Joining any NPC faction.. thats not always logical.
If i am member of brutor tribe, then this is by birth - a decision one makes early in character creation.
So you should not be able just to "join" them like joining a commerical corporation.
Sisters of eve, or ishukone or republic fleet - those you should be able to join as there is no heritage-by-birth link that needs to be respected for story consistency reasons. In those cases i would agree to allow people to change into one of those corporations as long the standings are really high. Maybe the same level as required to obtain jump clones.
___________
quick answer: yes , but...
bad or good? neither.

Genuine solo players I have no problem with. As far as whether or not it makes sense to play an MMO that way, I think that's down to the individual. Heck, there are plenty of times when I enjoy taking time out and running a quiet L4 mission or two on my alt myself. It makes a nice change from the higher profile PvP side of my game.
On the other hand, the farmers who deliberately hide in NPC corporations purely so that wardecs don't interfere with their "line of work", I have a big problem with. Consequently, these sorts of players are one of the reasons I endorse suicide ganking.

There is no issue. You can only herd players like cats you cannot enforce what they will do. If they want to play solo and not cooperative, they will play solo or they won't play at all.
If people are playing solo and have little to no interaction with other players then what does it matter to the rest of the player base? If it doesn't matter to the rest of the player base then how can it be a public issue?
In short, how does it affect the players and what makes it a problem?

Edited by: Sariyah on 16/05/2008 19:09:31 MMO - solo players? No problem with it. But it's a paradox... could never understand why. If a MMO promotes single player mode it only means the company making it needs to rethink what they want to do, maybe they should have released a single player game instead Edit: Could just be antisocial people maybe

Ankh summed it up nicely, pretty much what I think. And solo play in an MMO does make a lot of sense. There are a lot of differences between solo playing an MMO and solo playing something on your harddisk. The most important ones being that you cannot save/reload or cheat in an MMO which makes your accomplishments a lot more real, and that even if you don't interact with others directly, there is ALWAYS indirect interaction, through the market or even player-encouraged game mechanic changes.
You want ME for the CSM!

Solo play in an mmo is just kind of creepy, assuming that is what you do 100% of the time. Taking a break and just doing your own thing here and there is fine. What is the point of being part of an mmo and paying to be in it if your going to solo all of the time? That would be on par with paying to get into a strip club so you can order overpriced watered down drinks to chug while staring at the floor. Sure its your $ but the appeal of doing so is just odd and it seems logical to save the $ and play a solo game.
Of course you have to take into consideration the type of play style they have. If they are mining veldspar in a hulk to make small iron charges and selling them at half the price they could get the tritanium for, they got mental issues. If they are going around blasting people left and right, they are paying for a target rich enviroment where the targets cry at times.
One is just plain creepy while the other is just being a pure ******* ,which is funny and nothing wrong with making people cry in game.
As for npc corps, they should go after 3 months of a character's life. Noobs would have a chance to learn and go solo the game or they can join a player corp and progress that way. Either way after 3 months you can be wardeced personally by another soloist or corp. That would DECIMATE the macro miner's way of life in one move.
Oh and how do i run for President of eve???

you dont seem to understand that solo play does not exclude interaction with the otehr 30.000 players. it just means one doesnt team up with a certain group of people.
he still can shoot and pvp, he stil can trade, he still can smack and flame and roleplay he can join gangs, - but is still referred to as solo player.
he is using the mmmo factor as well as you, just not as part of a corp or alliance.
