out of all the functions in a game i've seen. the self destruct function is completely useless other than for exploiting insurance money and cheating pirates out of their dues.
remove it completely, or at a compromise have the function removed after 30 seconds after a red GCC or agression.

Poor pvper didnt get his killmail? If you cant kill your prey in time its your own fault.
SD is the last line of defense for the defenseless, denial of killmails the revenge of the weak. ------------------------------------------------------- Sig was removed due to derogatory comments towards a group of people. -Karl Chroimcer

rofl... indeed they didnt.. but i gotta admit it was fun watching somebody self destruct a claymore after 25 minutes of taking their shield off... shame they cheated the gang out of the loot we earnt.
and is ejecting is not an option anymore?

Edited by: Gort on 16/05/2008 19:04:39 Sorry, I think this is a bad idea.
Sometimes it's the best way to clone jump. And sometimes blowing up one's own ship is the best way to go.

Um, if it took you 25 minutes they prolly got bored and just wanted to leave. Stop sucking at life, and train for some DPS. Or get a friend in a BS. Either way, this was your fault, and you earnt nothing.

bad idea to get rid of it, or even to limit it.

Ooh!
How about we make them even better!!!
Then when some pirate thinks he's "all that and a bag of potato chips" and wants to take out some Rookie miner with the ol' Can Flip... the Rookie can SD his free Rookie boat and DD the pirate!! Then head home, get another free ship and basic mining laser, and come back to chew rocks.
Any votes???

Edited by: Taedrin on 16/05/2008 22:38:45 How is self-destructing "cheating pirates out of their dues"? A criminal (albeit a virtual criminal) doesn't *deserve* anything from the crimes they commit. If you want your "dues" from a pilot who will self destruct, offer a rational ransom (rational meaning that the victim stands to lose less if he gives you the ransom money, than be destroyed).
Self-destruct is too useful as a last defiant act against an aggressor. It tells the aggressor that I would rather kill myself than give you the pleasure of killing me, and stealing my loot.
How about this as a compromise: self-destruct yields no insurance pay out. This way a pilot can still defy teh ebil piwates, but to do so will cost him more than simply losing his ship.

I don't know about that. There are applications when you'd want to SD. Like a gate camp for instance. Would you rather eject and let them claim a fully functional ship, or leave them to pick clean the wreckage. Of course you could say, you don't get insurance unless you were taking a lot of damage at the time. Then you can't just undock, SD, and commit insurance fraud. Of course folks will just shoot each other first, but at least they're putting forth the effort.
I think it might work better this way. Give insurance a slight delay like rat bounties. The delay is the Pend Insurance company investigating the scene, and reading the black box. Not to say CCP needs to review each shipwreck themselves, but the mechanic weighs out the variables and decides if you staged it or not. Then SD is still a viable alternative, without the fraud.
And as for Pirates and their "epic lootz"... go get a real job and mission for an agent. =)

I have no problem with people scuttling their ships to stick it to you. They should probably still give a killmail if they were engaged at the time. Removing SD would also make podjumping a lot harder.
As for exploiting insurance, that can be done easily anyway, just head to a belt and let the rats have you. Embarassing deathmail, but it'll get the job done.
You also have to consider that it allows you to escape from some situations where you'd rather not stick around. With no self destruct I can web and scram a pod in a belt (or even near a station or gate if I bump him away from it), and there is nothing he can do about it. He's stuck until someone kills him or me or I let him go. -------------------- ICE Blueprint Sales FIRST!! -Yipsilanti Pfft. Never such a thing as a "last chance". ;) -Rauth |

No
Let's instead make a self destruct a weapon.
When a ship self destructs it produces a damaging cloud that deals damage equal to 10x its cap losing 1k of damage per 1km from the explosion.

If you couldnt kill it in the time that was given to you...then you didnt earn ****...a 25 minute baddle with a Claymore and you claiming that you earned anything is just to hilarious...
Bring the right tools for the job and stop whining!

I disagree.
You should always be able to self-destruct... Just not get any insurance for it. You only get paid when someone blows you up.
