Edited by: Shamis Orzoz on 18/05/2008 21:15:47 I met Dark Elf several times in eve. He was a decent guy.
The changing of the station name was in no way intended to disrespect his memory. If you feel that he needs a station named for him, you are welcome to name one of your own after him. But we really didn't know him that well, so we decided to change the name.

It is a brutal but undeniable fact of life, that you and everyone you care about will die.
How many stations are there in EVE?

An alliance should be able to call a station what they like tbh. No disrespect at all at chging it from Dark Elf. I'd say 90% of EVE had no idea why it was called Dark Elf anyway. meh i dunno. ___________________________

Personally, I do not like bringing in RL stuff into the game. This is a game, leave RL out of it. Personally, I would not want a memorial of any kind in eve if i past on.

When Priory had the V2 station in catch a couple of years ago it got named The Richard Whitely Memorial Station (the man's an absolute legend), some ****** petitioned it or mebee the GM's check all station name changes.
Either way it got nullified and I think way even got warned for it. This is pretty soon after some SA put up the Rampage Memorial Outpost. TBH I never really understood the difference in the two cases and CCP should say you're either allowed to do this or not. Anyway those who would take offence are the type of PC moaning ****s 90% of the population despise, PL have nothing to apologise for.

We already had this debate yesterday, DE wouldn't have cared and his friends remember him trough other means than stations.
Hell I didn't even know there was a station named after him.

The idea of dedicating something in-game to a fallen friend is touching. However, when that asset leaves your hands and enters someone else's it falls unto them to do as they please with said asset.
In this instance, it would appear they're deciding to go a different direction in the naming of their station. Rather than entertain this subject with more threads and appeals to the current station owners, that energy might be better applied to acquiring a new station to which the memorial could be resurrected.
If that doesn't look like it's in the cards, I think it's safe to say that Dark Elf has been properly honored and not sure if there is a need for a memorial to persist to the end of EvE.

With all due respect to the guy behind Dark Elf that name is so very wrong and anything named that ingame needed to go, good call.

It'd be fairly easy to say stuff about nothing lasts forever or maybe you should have tried to defend it a bit harder if you cared so much, but...
What'd be really cool would be to petition CCP to place one of those monument thingies outside the station with this guys name on it, as something permanent.
After all, even if he is one day forgotten and all his old friends gone and left the game, there will still be something there bearing his name and giving people cause to reflect for just a second and say "So who was this guy?"

That would not be cool, eve is not a godamn grave yard, I don't want to fly slalom trough memorials for every eve player and his dog that died, I will never understand this facination with memorials etc for people, especially when the vast majority of eve really wont care as they didnt know him.

Wasnt brought from Bruce, but nice try. TBH blast wasnt in a condition too own g95 and the sad fact of the matter is we had all but moved back out a week after taking possesion tbh. On the matter of g95's name, not sure why it made COAD but hey why not, we kept the name the way we did because of respect too DE and the help he freely gave on the forums and because it didnt hurt us too keep the name, but that said we no longer have the station and the names changed too better reflect the PL ownership, no big deal, time too move on I expect. Yeah but people build themselves grandious memorials and graves IRL, only makes sense and is more realistic if they do it in Eve as well
Also not like space is so small in Eve, and you can always whack it at some random planet if you can't bear the thought of loading one extra model every time you warp in to station

Then let PEOPLE build these memorials with real resources.
And make them destructable, just like irl.
Yes we build monuments in real life, however we also tear them down, remember that before you have another bring irl comparison.

Sure. In fact I'd support a series of generic tools that would give people the building blocks to do their own custom RP and storys and events in game.
A station is a station, and just happens to be a memorial in this case because you can rename it. It is an inintended consequence how players have used something seemingly innocent and simple as naming your own outposts
There are pleanty more examples as well of people building up their roleplay and stories/events on unintended mechanics
It'd be far better to have player made and deployed beacons, acceleration gates and so on that don't rely on CCP or unintended mechanics.

I don't have a clue who DarkElf is or was, but I do remember seeing his name on a station as I was flying through Fountain last week.
I remember seeing it because there is another station baring his name. It's one of the other of the newly aquired Solar Fleet stations in Frege's former home, 9IZ or NGM, in the Drone Regions.

Edited by: mazzilliu on 19/05/2008 15:27:10 i dont know who dark elf is, but i would really prefer that all of EVE were offended and make frivolous petitions about us and the station, and then cry about us on the forums. also make big talk about taking the station from us too, its not like we were actively trying to take it anyways.
oh well, RIP dark elf guy, all your rookie ships were named after you.
