I know this isnt a new topic, but here's my take on the local issue.
- Remove local - Replace scanner with sensor screen - Sensors are based off of sensor type and resolution of ship type - Sensor detection of a target is based off sensor res, range and target sig radius - There are active and passive sensors - Active sensors provide a picture out to sensor range (beyond visual range) on a graphical display (similar to solar system map), but also gives away your approximate position. - Passive sensors operate to provide you target ID on ships you can see (same grid, as is now), as well as detecting active signatures and displaying them on the display. - Active sensors would only give you a rough estimate of where targets are located, probes would still be needed to pinpoint. - New ship types could be introduced to fill a now needed role; SWACS (Spaceborne Warning and Control System). This ship type would have a much greater sensor coverage, but would only have defensive combat capability.
POS sensor modules could also be introduced (like a radar outpost). And many changes and tweaks would be required to balance everything. But for the basic idea, I think it would add more tactical depth to the game. It could also open the possibility of BVR combat and indirect fire.
Thoughts?

Good question, I hadnt considered that. And since the station environment is completely separate from the 3d environment, adding any interaction between the two would be tricky.
Maybe a station sensor screen thats limited to 1 refresh every 5 minutes or so, and only refreshes manually to limit the amount of data interacting between environments.

Not sure how much more trouble it'll stir up. But make any undocking ship protected by the station shield for a certain duration or distance. Then you are protected while coming out, but can't linger for too long before the immunity wears off. And you can't immediately warp off, and expect it to last the full timer either.

I had a similar idea posted a little while back. Thought I could linky it in here for your reading. Some of the comments I got might give you more to go on.

Maybe eliminated local, and force people to use the constellation channel. It would make things more uncertain, yet still allow the chatting and smack talk.

I posted something too, and Blondie got something good in that post. LOCAL basically, local could be broadcasted on certain range, say station transmited, with range limit.

Well that's the bloody point of the game - huge, void, cold and cruel space, crawling with surprise and suspense.

I honestly expected more resistance to this. Though in the end, I'm sure its all wasted breathe. The devs are probably well set on whatever path they've chosen. We'll just have to wait a few years to find out what they're thinking.

Why? Removing the member list suffices, you should be free to broadcast your existence to everyone if you choose to do so.
I can't decide whether to sign this or not, as it doesn't seem to be the ideal solution to me, and I'm not willing just to think of one just to make you eat flaming death.
What about collecting mechanic requirements for the local nerf first, before melting it into rp?

Minimising local solves this problem, as does not spamming the forums to force CCP to give you your own way. ----------------------------------------------- Goons or Ebola... I'll take Ebola over Noob Ship Online. |

Everyone knows they could minimize Local. But they want CCP to save them from themselves. They're afraid of their self-induced paranoia, knowing someone could be watching them. They want to have the truth hidden from them by "The Man". The evil dark truth, that there ARE people out there, and they're watching you. Right now... they're watching you. And the asteroids... oh, the asteroids.

Edited by: Thunderbird Anthares on 19/05/2008 06:29:53 ok crap that just made my bones chill
but really, removing member list from it just could do it
i do like the sensor idea of yours,i really do,but devs wont do it as it would need a serious rework of the system ------------------------------------------------ When you get to the end of your journey, everything that really matters is the journey itself. |

You won't.
or give a window view in the station to let you look outside.
maybe allow us to launch camera probes?

now thats an idea i can go for. and make them large enough that carrying them all the time is inconvenient. that ways if your just doing a run into low sec they are useful, but not an everyday thing.

This thread, and the other one about Local, would do well to get on the same page. Then there aren't 2 arguments for the same topic, and people raising the same points in both.
