Edited by: TWD on 01/05/2004 23:15:52 Wouldn't it be great if they only explode/do aggression/damage when hit on the target?
Currently there are 2 very big issues with (cruise) missiles doing damage/aggression to obstacles:
1) In empire space, when fighting a corp you are at with and your missile hits a random ship flying in your missile path your ship gets owned by concord/sentrys
2) When close to a target, using close range weapons, your ship gets owned up by friendly cruise missiles, especially when in a frigate.
Dunno about other people, but I would like to see this fixed. |

I like that missiles run into things. It gives them some flavor and makes them different than turrets. they just need to be balanced with this in mind.
Perhaps for targetted missiles the warhead would only arm when it hits its target. You'd still lose the missiles if they hit a roid or a friendly, but they at least wouldn't kill friendlies.

totally agree and I have posted regarding this many times.
I wish missles only hit their intended target and like turrets pass through anything else and splash dmg is removed.
or
turrets get the same collision rules.
But I would prefer the first option! Im tired of certain corps I am at war with hugging non war ships whether intentially or not, it means i cannot fire my missles which is all I have left when jammed.

It would be cool if missiles just broke on impact with obstacle and not explode, kinda like that torpedo did in "Hunt for the Red October". --

I remember an industrial literally hiding inside a stargate (the 0.0 gallente ones) from my crow that used cruise missiles. I could not hit the industrial as my missiles kept hitting the stargate. And i had no way to force the situation to change....
This doesn;t sound right to me...

Thats the image I had in mind.

Sounds like an indy pilot that actually does something proactive to save his ship, though I don't know why he didn't just jump after you shot and had to wait for your agression timer to run out.
I'd like to see more stuff like this, not less. the only problem is that in empire you'd splash the gates and get nuked. fix that and it'd be cool.

Actually that torpedo didnt break on objects. The torp didnt arm itself yet. Torps have to travel for a set period of time before arming themselves for the kill. Would be kinda cool if they could implement that so missiles/torps dont arm until they are like 5k from target.

If EVE were a game like Quake, and totally twiched based, I'd disagree. Since EVE is a lock/target/shoot game, yes, missiles should just hit what you shoot at.
You shouldn't be able to 'hide' behind stations or jumpgates and you should not be killed by concord because some stray ship got in the path of your missiles.
Turrets do not behave in this manner, nor should missiles. EVE isn't a game where you can aim at what you're shooting at, so why should missile users deal with these handicaps? ------

Why should it NOT be this way? I'm currently in 2 ships where I almost never use missiles, but I see no reason to give a penalty to missile users. Turrets are better than missiles after all, the only good thing I can think of is that they work both close and long range.

I think it would look rather dumb, ur missiles flying through objects, least u cant see ur turrets do this, and is semi realistic.... I think its the way it should be.. sometimes u just need to adapt.

i dont mind that missiles hit roids. that makes sense. you cant have htem flying through them - thatd look stupid. but on the other hand, you shouldnt be able to have lasers and stuff go through roids either. If anything, missiles should be better around obstacles, since they can steer around them, while a turret shot MUST go in a straight line. i mean come on, all these high tech spaceships, and they cant put a little controller in each missiles that says "Do not hit roids"??

Missiles should go through obstacles, after all, turrets do so. Why not missiles?

I'd vote for removing the fire through obstacle ability from turrets rather than giving it to missiles. It makes no sense to be able to fire a laser beam at a target on the other side of a huge space station or a 100km thick asteroid And if they can make missiles hit 'em, then they can make turrets do it too... I'd say that torpedos should not explode on impact if they hit an obstacle on the way, for aforementioned reasons...

I agree that missile warheads should not explode when hitting not targeted/hostle (in the case of FoFs) ships/objects. But I do think that hiding behind something should be a viable tactic. But I think you should be able to hide from turrets as well. To me it would make the game more interesting.

The silliest thing about this to me is that missiles are the guided (intelligent) weapons, whereas turret propelled weapons aren't. Missiles should be things that are capable of avoiding obstacles (especially considering CPU cost of launchers versus turrets). When we add in the cost of missiles too....
Sorry, just stopping another missile dissertation rant whilst in the first paragraph. Missiles need to be balanced with turrets in this - and making turrets hit obstacles would make combat too difficult in certain situations.

Turrets goin through objects is understandable. turrets are main weapons of the game and having them hit obstacles would slow down combat and make certain players become cheap players and just hide behind crap. Now with missles i tihnk that torps and maybe just heavy missles should hit obstacles, but CRUISE missles??? they are called CRUISE missles for a reason they shouldnt hit anything other than the target and do it fast just like real CRUISE missles. especially if you need all the subsequent skills for them they should be worth it. Cruise missles are supposed to be smart enough to fly around objects and take out the target cruis missles should not hit ANY obstacles. Or how about a new skill called smart weapons that increases missle tracking and non target object avoidence i dunno but a thoguht

Cruise missiles should actually hit the intended target as they are supposed to be intelligent..... damn the cruise missiles fired from the 6th fleet in the Gulf followed roads to the intended target.... if we can do this in the 21st century.... anyway..... waffling.
I agree with the arming of the missiles, that sounds a good idea. I also see no reason why turrets should be able to fire through rock, its just rediculous. So what if people go hide behind a roid? Go flush em out!

maybe stuff is there to be hidden behind, i have always thought it stupid that your guns can fire through stations and roids, this should not be the case
missiles should only explode on contact with the target, that itself would make them a very adaptable weapon, hell even make them salvagable if they bump into a station or roid so you can re-use them if they dont go off.

Gotta agree on this, if turrets shoot though a roid, that missiles should also. I'd have no problem with a bit of randomness on how hard they hit though. Maybe a missile missed it's target but explodes 2k beyond it, and still causes half dammage, so similar to a 1400mm striking lightly for 54.2 damage. Just my 2 cents.

YES, we shall add it to the MAGIC SLUGS THAT FLY THROUGH THINGS IDEA BIN THEN.
I propose that you test something in reality, fire a gun at someone behind a brickwall. If it doesn't hit the brickwall but passes through it, post back to the forum explaining how you defied various physical walls and we shall all bow down to your amazing amazing grasp of reality.

Edited by: Xadian on 03/05/2004 00:03:30 what if certain objects could be pierced by turrets (i.e. a bullet going very very fast like turret ammo could pierce a rock but not a station which is engineered against puncture) and then missles could simply have an "Intelligence" stat saying how "smart" a missle was and how much mroe likely it would be to maneuver around an obstacle. And as to saying that missles should only hit their intended target, even a missle will hit a bystander if they step right in front of it

nice thought, but again reality comes into play, you can get bullets that fire through iron plates, you can get lasers that cut through iron plates, but try that on a huge chunk of rock from like an asteroid and you wont be firing through anything :)

Edited by: Nim Caslo on 03/05/2004 02:53:47 Maybe make a seperate skill called missile programming or some other such thing, and it adds a 5% chance that the missile will "miss" (pass through) said object in it's path and will continue on to the targeted object. Though this skill should only be for the various (f.o.f. included) Cruise, Heavy, and Standard missiles since the other missiles, Torpedoes and rockets, are essentially dumb weapons. I think that'd be a good fix to such a problem. I wont go in to how turrets should shoot through objects..... ========================================== |
