Hello all...I recently placed a GSC near an asteroid belt (you see 'em all the time), I logged back on tonight and the damn thing is gone!?!?!?!With the cargo!?? What the heck!?!?!? Anyway, can they be stolen or do the expire in two hrs like the rest of them??? What happened?? I know it sounds like a noob question but I'm new to the whole mining thing. Help....

You must learn the Anchoring skill and anchor your containers in space from an Industrial ship, and you must also password protect your containers to prevent others from stealing their contents. You will know your container has successfully anchored when the security lights on it turn from first green (when it is first placed in space) to then yellow (while it is in the process of being anchored) and finally to red (when it is anchored in space). There will also be a ^ symbol underneath the blip in space when you view it. So be sure you don't select "anchor" and then warp out, because it may not take (though I have not tried it).
You can only place secure containers in 0.6 security or below, and you can only place them 5km apart from one another and any other asteroid in range.

It's been a while since I put a container in high-sec, but I'm sure it's 0.7 and below for anchoring stuff (whether it's a POS or a secure can, same rules apply). You can place them anywhere, but only anchor them in 0.7 or lower.
(Yes there are exceptions, some modules require 0.3 and below, or 0.0 or sovereignty, but that's out of scope for this question). Point is that NOTHING can be anchored in 0.8 or above.
If something isn't anchored, then it can be scooped and taken without penalty to the person taking it. ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University. |

Ah, indeed. Ty Baka. I try to help as I can with the things I've learned thus far, but I'm also still new to the game (five week old char) so the correction is appreciated. I should have remember it was 0.7 but I forgot that I skipped 0.7 cuz it is so overmined and high traffic at the roid belts that it's a joke. Plus the rats don't give phatty loot like Muon Disrupters worth a cold 3mil.

Nice to see people helping out....but be prepared to be corrected. There are lots of people here who will pick up the slightest mistake.
I've been corrected on numerous occasions (too many to remember). |

yes they can be hacked if password protected , but by only guessing the password, the skill hacking has nothing to do with this so as always choose a good password -- BIG Lottery, BIG Deal, InEve 5th Anniversary Lottery

on a bit of a side question, If you have one anchoered and passed. How easy is it to destroy the GSC? And with destrying it will they then get the cargo?

That's a bit of a misleading way to express it - and while it's just an issue of semantics it still probably could have been expressed better. Hacking usually would refer to a way to bypass the security systems on the can - and in that respect, there is no way to do that. Entering the correct password is the only way to gain access to the container, and likewise anyone who discovers/guesses the password will have access too - RaTTuS was right to say that passwords should be chosen carefully (just like for anything that is protected by a password).
Originally by: Rob Silverton on a bit of a side question, If you have one anchoered and passed. How easy is it to destroy the GSC?
Very hard. GSCs have half a million hitpoints, such that even with multiple battleships firing on it, it will still take minutes to go down. And GSCs count as your property, so anyone firing on them will get a Global Criminal Countdown; this means getting CONCORDed in high-sec. Basically, high-sec cans can only feasibly be destroyed by people who are at war with you, and even then it's not likely to be worth the ammo they spend doing it.

Actually, I'm not really sure. I think that it's be like any other container that gets destroyed - each item within has a chance to be destroyed in the explosion or be left behind in a can - but it may be that when the container is destroyed, its contents invariably go with it. Because of the difficulty and cost of destroying one (see above), it's not likely to be a massive issue unless you know that your wartargets like to keep T2/faction modules in their GSCs for some bizarre reason.

Has anyone tried this? I'm wondering if it's necessary to wait by the container for the 60 seconds.
I'm also wondering if it's a deterrent against pirates. I carry my trade items in giant secure containers. I'm wondering, should someone attack me, can I just anchor the container and, even if they kill me before it finalizes the anchor, it be safe?

I have a question about secure containers. I set a password on a container and have since forgotten what the password was. Is there a way to reset it? I'm in 0.9 space so it wasn't anchored and was able to scoop it up and take it back to the station.

You can just repackage it and the items will go back into your hangar, AFAIK.

I haven't tried it, but I'm 99% sure you need to wait for the anchoring time for the object to be anchored. If you could just leave it, then there wouldn't be much point in any object having an anchoring time. POSes in particular require you to sit around for quite a while, if you're taking down/putting up a whole one.

If you're being attacked by pirates, it's unlikely that you would survive for the 60 seconds required to anchor the can - and in this situation, I am pretty sure that the anchoring would not be completed. As for it being a deterrent - I wouldn't class it as that so much, pirates will pretty much shoot whatever they can catch, rather than scanning your cargo and debating whether it's worth it. It would probably **** them off a bit, as they would have to get an industrial to scoop the container(s) and get your loot rather than just picking it from the wreck - but at the end of the day, you've still been destroyed so it's up to you to decide whether that's worthwhile.

Its worth noting that on the containers are a set of lights which are visible.
If the container is anchored correctly then the lights are red.
If the container is unachored then the lights are green. Anyone can scoop a container which isn't anchored (green lights). Go into a belt, select GSC only on overview and flick between each using the look at. Find one which is green and scoop away. You'll be amazed what some players keep in their containers - I look upon it as tidying up the universe
