I thought this guy was talking about bringing some hot ladies back.
I'm sorry but Germany and Belgium owns us in the chocolate department. One of my coworkers brought back some of those chocolates with the alcohol in them and we had a feild day snacking on those at work until a buzz set in.
For cheap vendor machine stuff though I'm always partial to peanut butter m&m's or reeses.
And yes mountain dew is the sugary sweet delight. You guys don't have it over there?

The Swiss and Germans certainly pwn Hershey on chocolate, yes, but the thing about the US is that the mass-produced stuff is always mediocre, while the really good stuff is hidden away. There is US chocolate (and beer) that's equivalent to the German product, you just have to look harder.

It depends on where your buddy is going. If your looking for universally American candy, Id tell him to just stop in a grocery store and pick up a reese package. If your looking for something more refined, tell him to go to a deticated candy store like Fany May. If your looking for regional though have him ask someone like at a bar or grocery checkout where the best candy store is in town. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

I spent my childhood seeing twinkies eulogised in cartoons, comics and adverts and in my imagination they were the food of the gods. Many years later while in uni I took my first independent trip to the US and went out of my way to find a pack of twinkies. I cradled it during the drive back home, settled down in a comfy chair so that I could truly relish this moment of briefly eating as gods must do and reverently tore open the pack, extracting that golden yellow pastry roll.
...I have never been so disappointed in my entire life.

I'm not much of a sweets kinda person. My favorite candy is dark chocolate, its about the sweetest thing I can stomach besides black licorice or red hots.
hershey's special dark ftw

Edited by: Bish Ounen on 22/05/2008 20:41:47 Well, if your buddy is going to be near Lebanon, PA, I recommend a visit to Wertz Candies. All the candy and confections there are HAND MADE by the talented staff at Wertz. If you are a Discovery Channel fan, and have watched "Dirty Jobs" You might remember Wertz Candies, as Mike Rowe did a Dirty Jobs segment there.

I can't read mountain dew anymore without thinking mount 'nd do as I read it.
Only stuff I've ever brought back from america is normal chocolate with marzipan etc in. Nothing special that other country's can't do better tbh. Mind you, I'm not much of a chocolate bar fan so their may be something I'm missing out on.

Jelly Belly's for the win. Minus buttered popcorn. The candy store I worked in during high school got a promo box of those and I about gagged.
Virginia Diner for the besst peanut brittle
Swiss and Belgium chocolate trumps US chocolate hands down.

Edited by: LordMordred on 23/05/2008 20:07:45 I'd recommend what some of the others have.
Salt water taffy is a good pick.
Despite common belief... there is outstanding chocolate in the US. However most of it is local stuff. However, it can match anything in the world.
Going to a Fany May store isn't a bad choice either... some interesting creations there. Very sweet though for the most part. However the mints are awesome.
Jelly Beans aren't a good pick ;) Far to common.
Oh, and for sodas... I've been to something like 20 countries. For the most part these are made locally if at all instead of imported from the US. Nothing quite tastes like the real thing. You can find Mountain Dew in some parts of the world other than the US... but it isn't real Mountain Dew. As it's a pepsi product it isn't as widely spread outside of the US like Coke products are. -----

Salt Water Taffy is amazing. I personally think the best is at Marini's Candies in Santa Cruz, CA.
I also agree on the Jelly Belly point. Totally unrivaled in the 'Candy Bean' industry. They can be found in Fairfield, CA or some grocery stores.
The standard convenience store chocolate in the US is pretty bad, in fact most stores stock European chocolates as "Premium". The best U.S. chocolate in my opinion is Ghirardelli out in San Francisco, but you can buy it in most grocery stores.
Come to think of it, all the best U.S. candies come from California, but then again, so does everything else.

Twinkies are VILE. They used to be quite good, but over the years they have changed the recipe so that now the darn things are mostly chemicals.
They say that a Twinkie has so many preservatives in it that under ideal conditions a Twinkie will still be edible after 30 YEARS.
Most other hostess products are similar in longevity. I wouldn't eat any of them.

Twinkies were originally hyped because they were that darn good way back in the day. They later became an iconic food not for their taste but for their incredibly cheap cost. Millions of students lived off of those things until Ramen became the new staple. Later the two together became a "balanced meal" during college life or for the corporate yuppies of the day. Seriously, in the states if you don't have time to go to lunch or are stranded somewhere that only has vending machines half the time you'll end up buying a twinkie like food and a soda. And if you're stuck in that situation, the twinkies can seem like the food of the gods.
Of course I'm not even sure if I've ever eaten an actual Twinkie by Hostess. There are so many imitation products out there that they are almost the same thing.

Put a Twinkie in the microwave. They apparently give off a smell like burning rubber (coincidence?). For best snack EVAR, drive up to Quebec and get Poutine. 'Nuff said. ---
