Using the analogy of a reinforced firing position, why can't we fire at hostile ships from inside of player controlled outposts and stations?
I am referring to using our own ships and drones here, by umbilical link to the station hub to coordinate shields to permit outgoing fire.
In other systems, when you have a defensive position, you use it to your advantage, like having the high ground.
Why are we leaving our POS and outposts before fighting?
Convert the ships to station defense mode, players would use their own ammo, modules and skill modifiers for offense, and the outpost or POS would provide the defense till it became reinforced.
After reinforcing, I figure it can no longer coordinate shields with player fire control. At that point, the guys inside the 'Fort' make ready for the coming fight, where if they lose, they have no more POS or Outpost, depending.
Between arrow slits and murder holes, our fortifications have always been designed to empower the defenders.
Just an idea. |

Have you ever tried shooting at a POS before? A large POS takes a fair bit of DPS and time to put it into reinforced mode/kill... meanwhile everything inside is virtually untouchable. Now you want a way to fight back while being untouchable?
Give people a way to shoot at stuff inside the POS while the shields are still up and you might be on to something. "Just because I seem like an idiot, doesn't mean I am one." ~Unknown |

How about the signature of the ship be reduced by a percentage amount based on how much shielding remains on a POS.
This would make ships at the start of a fight having a great advantage, but if the shields get beaten down enough, the bigger ships inside start to become targets that can be hit. |

I don't know about poses just because of the shields but station should have better inside defense, at the very least it helps the weaker side of a battle, if their already heavy outnumbered.
The whole way you take station should be expanded into something more elaborate and actually fun, instead of sitting their shooting it for ages. |

I agree with your logic; however, I believe that it might be a little un-balanced. Titans would simply sit in the POS bubble one-shotting everything they can find, while being untouchable. Get a few titans and supers inside the bubble, suddenly the POS is looking pretty hard to take down.
I like the concept, but I think there would have to be some drawback to keep it balanced. Perhaps the ships drain the POS shields faster by "leeching" the shield from the POS to the ship when they are hit? Extra ship protection at the cost of your POS shields being used faster might be viable - you would have to make the decision whether to leave the POS shields at full strength or leech some of the HP from the POS shields to keep your fleet alive. I'm not sure, that would need a lot more work. |

It could be that the damage to the ships being hit would also be duplicated on the station shields, while the shields took normal damage from the shots that 'miss' the ships targeted.

OK, fine, you can have your "shoot me from inside the POS bubble" feature ...
... but then the attacking side gets to target/shoot at anything they want to inside, without having to pop the shields first, and there is no "incapp'd" for internal modules -- they simply DIAF.

Actually you can offline any service at an outpost now. So if someone took the time to establish an offence platform in thier outpost it would just be a matter of targeting that before the proper station. Once an Offence platform is down you would be expected to undock if you wanted to continue defence.
The same is true for a POS. POS guns are not inside the bubble and we have POS defence skills. POS defence 5 allows for 5 gun control or Web, scram, EWar and gun combo. |

You're right Sky, but the OP is talking about the rest of the fleet sitting in the bubble and being able to target (from their ships) anyone outside and shoot at them with relative impunity. |

Now that you mention it, we might be getting this and we don't even know it.
You can't touch a station if the I-Hub is up and the I-Hub is at a planet so it doesn't get a POS like the TCU can have. After Dust514 comes out though, hitting an I-Hub will put you in range of the Dust firepower on the planet surface. We will be defending our outposts through our I-Hubs with Dust514.

There's a nice simple solution to this. Move your fleet outside the bubble and engage the attacking fleet.
By the looks of things everyone agrees that allowing the defenders' ships to shoot on the attacking fleet whilst immune is unfair so the attacking fleet will be able to attack the defending fleet. Well, we have that now. If you want to attack the attackers with your own POS defence fleet you can. You just leave the bubble. You don't have to go more than just outside so you can run back in if you fancy it.
I don't really understand what the OP suggestion would add to the game. |
