I have zero understanding of the economic nuances of market trading so forgive me when I undoubtedly offend some of the experts....I buy what I need and reprocess what I don't so I've never really looked at the trading side of the game.
I decided to spend my 'free' aurum that CCP gifted to me but not having enough i looked into buying more, from both CCP and the contract page. It appears that it's not a viable option...there is no return on the isk i'd spend.
Currently Aurum appears to be an epic fail. It costs 1 plex(480m) for 3500 Aur...3500 aur buys you an item with a maximum resell value of 55 mil...What's the point??
Is it overshooting by CCP or is it a fail for the traders not realizing the true profit potential. What I'm asking I guess is who's fault is it for Aurum and the Nex merchandise not meshing into a viable trade option? |

Everything cheaper than the monocle and field marshal coat (in the NEX store) could be obtained with free gifted Aurum from CCPs market page thing, the name of which I forget. Basically we all got free Aurum for spamming links/likes to it on facebook etc....
If you want cheaper Aurum then look on contracts for Aurum Tokens. Should be able to pick them up for under 100M each (1000 Aurum per token).
I'm still waiting for all the other stuff to be released into the NEX store. It's already in-game, just not available. Aur is a complete failure on CCP's part, as well as the entire NeX. It's stupid **** that wasted a lot of dev time, unfortunately. |

Nex store items, although sellable on the market, are never going to be a good deal when sourced with PLEX->Arum.
It is too easy for anyone to get their hands on those items any where they want to get them. The marginal value of an extra pair of shoes in almost zero. Maybe some day, if there is a fully fleshed out WiS, and there are some limited edition items, those limited items may have some upside. The only "currency" trade in Eve right now is ISK/PLEX, that's it. |

Last year CCP gave upto 5500 free AUR per account to promote their site "eve is real" - http://www.eveisreal.net/#!/sharing-rewards/ That was given in 4 parts, each time all active accounts getting the reward.
Then again CCP gave 2000 free AUR per account as christmas present (for those who chose this option).
All this free AUR crashed the market prices of many NeX items. New to EVE? Don't forget to read: The Manual * The Wiki * The Career Options * and everything else |

From what I can establish, we will be making commercial transactions with Dust players using Aurum. I don't know if CCP planned to have us handle thier manufacturing or what but it was all clean sailing up to the point of what we use Aurum for. Right now, we don't.
I have seen stealth suggestions that maybe Aurum will end up being 1 week game time per token but I am really going out on a limb there. If that were to happen, we would see Aurum tokens at 120 mill or so based on current Plex rates. Right now you can't put Tokens on the market and you can't move them in game but that was the case with Plex in the beginning as well. Also, they may add more incentive to Aurum for EVE players but everything they have tried so far was viewed as RMT and saw severe negative reaction. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cg-_HeVNYOk

A giant huge limb. What is it, 3600 AU per PLEX, something like that. PLEX for a month, to get 3600 weeks? Kinda doubt that. Maybe 1000 AU for a week, bringing the convenience cost up above the PLEX cost. And as pointed out above CCP gave away a lot of AU. If they ever allow it to be redeemd for game time, then they knowingly shot them selves in the foot in advance, that seems unlikely.
I would not be surprised to see AU useable in the Dust store, used to purchase BPCs for weapons and other sorts of micro-transaction powerups and what not. But game time? I doubt it. |

It's hard to say with almost no solid information on how Dust 514 and Eve will integrate and how the micro-transactions of Dust will work. What we can guess is that when (if?) walking in stations is implemented and once we have soaked up all the free Aurum floating around there is (I think at least) a good chance that will see the value of ISK and Aurum reach an equilibrium that is more representative of their "real" value relationship. |

The failure of AURUM was because of the ridiculous exchange rate between isk and AURUM. This was done with the intent to have items like the monocle to be rare not everyone who wanted one would get it. The problem is very few EVE players are willing to spend isk or real life money on PLEX to convert to AURUM for items that are not only vanity items with absolutely zero impact on game play but cost more in isk equivalent than a fully fit battleship.
The reason why NEX store items are being sold in game for far less than there isk equivalent of the AURUM spent is that these item came from the free AURUM. Very very few players in EVE actually bought PLEX to convert to AURUM to buy these vanity items. The NEX store and AURUM implementation was a complete fail on the part of CPP.
From what I have read about DUST 514 it looks like eventually PI will become either very risky or a major PITA to do successfully without the added expense of paying DUST 514 mercenaries to protect your colony's. PI is required for building and fueling POSes, building POCOs and a few other items.
CCP completely miss judged the reaction of the player base with regard to the NEX store and AURUM. which really scares me with DUST 514 coming out soon. If they think they can force players to participate in the content related to DUST 514 based on the fact that so much industry in EVE is no reliant on PI materials as they are no longer seeded in game, they are in for a very rude awakening. Most players will quite the game before being forced into content they do not chose to play. There is very little isk in PI but it is mostly passive so many players still do it. If it becomes either not passive or not profitable due to DUST 514 players attacking planet facilities most will stop doing it and both DUST 514 and EVE will suffer greatly for it.
I really hope they get it right this time. EVE can not handle another massive failure like the NEX and AURUM implementation caused. |
