Well i heard you get a significant fps boost if you bootcamp to windows and run Eve online on youre iMac (20" 2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo) and i assume i can get access to Premium content as well? But anyways will XP make it run faster than if i would be to install Vista?
On a side note, since im upgrading my RAM on the iMac from 1 GB to 4 GB will it affect Eve in any way noticeable? ----------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't know if its faster to run the game under bootcamp running it in XP over Vista. I didn't get that much of a speed boost while running it with the Premium Client. I would expect better performance with the Classic Graphics Client.
I don't run the game under BootCamp mainly because I have had nothing but issues with bootcamp itself. I have not been able to keep a working copy of XP on the system. it crashed the first day of running BC, and I have not been able to successfully reinstall XP yet. I've given up on BC it I can get a new system.

Are there any experience with Hackintosh machines and bootcamp?

Vista has more overhead than XP so it will be a tad slower.. imo
As for a Hackintosh, all that is, is a intel box with some vodo to run OS X so it will run Windows with no issues.. but it might take some tweeking on your part.

why not install windows on it in the first place?
10.5.3 will boast graphical updates (see delicious library update, it notes a critical update to graphics)
VMWare 2 will now support DX9 w/shader etc.. and is free upgrade to VMWare 1 users.
Those might help..
and as for bootcamp... well.. maybe theres a bootcamp driver boost or w/e but i doubt its gonna be a huge difference.

Vista is not a lot slower than XP unless you're running on a budget old machine. I have been running Vista since it came out and would never go back to XP. Don't listen to this FUD.
However, unless you have the cash to shell out for Vista I would still say that it is overpriced for only minimal functionality and superficial interface improvements. It does look and handle a lot nicer though.

Hehe I had to switch back to XP at work due to Vista. I simply don't have time to f**k around and get it to work AS IT SHOULD WORK. It's not a performance issue either, at least not on the hardware part. Identical hardware (2 identical computers) and XP wins at least in this office. It might not be "bad", but if you are really serious about work efficiency.... go XP or OSX. Let Vista figure out it's kinks and bugs for one year at least...

On my iMac i will have 4 GB of RAM will it be a problem to run that with XP i heard somewhere that you need like a 64 bit version of XP or something to support more than 2 GB of ram was someone just trying to fool me?

Meh, Win XP can only use 4 GB. More stuff to read on this head over to the dark side: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/platform/server/PAE/PAEmem.mspx

the limitation is with 32bit XP/vista versions. they can only utilize 3GB.
windows server versions can use more than 4GB even when only 32bit.
but on the client side you will need 64bit vista to use all your ram.

Yeah, um, no.
I'm running a 2 GHz dual core AMD cpu with 4 Gb of ddr and dual 8600GT's in non-SLi mode with a striped raid for my C drive and a mirrored raid on my D drive, with 64 bit vista ultimate. I get me a score of 4.8 according to vista's performance thing, and yeah, it's my CPU and memory limiting the result.
What I mean by XP running slower than Vista is I can get about 80-100 fps in space under XP with maxed settings, under Vista I tend to get 40-50. If you move that up to 2 clients, then I get 20-30 fps under vista and stay about 50-70 under XP.
I've been running Vista since the oper beta, and have been running ultimate on this particular system since feb of last year.
Biggest issues I have are that its search/indexing feature grinds your HDD's phenominally, and Windows Defender does much the same thing, only other option being to disable them.
So nothing to do with FUD, just point of fact that Vista has a far great overhead in terms of performance requirement than XP, and as such as far as eve is concerned XP runs a load quicker. It's still very smooth, even with 2 clients, and no way I'm going back to using XP on my main machine, but there you go.
Given my Vista PC is not to far off in terms of spec than that of the OP, my guess is that his experience is not going to be far off of what I'm getting. So, not so much FUD as 15 months experience of Vista ultimate (19 with beta) with a system of similar spec to the OP.
Oh, and as for the 3 / 4 GB thing ... whilst there is a 4GB limitation from the 32 bit side of things, I think the 3 Gb limit is more to do with some motherboards/bios. My upgrade from 2 to 4 Gb was ok under XP but it did require a bios update and a setting change (can't remember which now)

Edited by: Enterlock on 31/05/2008 03:26:18 I run a single 8800GT with a C2D e6750 and 2GB of RAM. My vista index is 5.9 and I get an avg fps of 150-250 in space with Vista on the premium client. The FPS is usually around 250 in space.
I do admit though, XP is more forgiving if you have a bottleneck in your system. For most systems these days XP doesn't really give you a performance increase IN MY EXPERIENCE.
edit: another confession... I do use XP on my bootcamp macbook because the mac client for EVE is total garbage

Well now ive installed eve on a windows xp (altough only 32 bit) but ive read somewhere that eve doesnt even benefit from more than 3 gig of RAM. Well anyways the FPS is several times higher than on the mac client undocked at a station in Rens i get an fps of around 80-100 in the mac client i get an fps of around 20-25, so its generally a 400% improvement.
So when is CCP going to scrap the OS X client cause i sure as hell dont recommend it, it is quite unreliable and this week i lost a Myrm due to the client freezing up during a mission and i just found out i wont get reimbursed. This sucks imo since its obviously due to a bad client and bugs that caused me to lose it and i still dont get reimbursed wtf? ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello all,
I'm here to ask some questions about Eve and Mac !
So, i'm about to buy a MPB 15" soon, I'm currently using a PC desktop that can run Premium really easy.
I have heard things about Parallels and Bootcamp....but i don't know exactly what it is.....anyway, i have been told that launching and operating Windows on Leopard is much easier than with the previous Mac OS. That its more powerful and stuf.
My question is : is it possible to launch Eve Premium on a MBP and playing a game not lagging ?
Thanks all,
Aaspa.

For shame Aaspa, buying a new computer and not doing basic internet research about options you hear about. How hard is it to Google "Parallels Mac" or "Bootcamp Mac"? I should not be so snide, however the answers are very easy to find.
Parallels is a virtual machine program, which runs a guest OS inside/longside another. You boot to into OSX and run Windows from Parallels. Unlike an emulator Parallels is supposed to be able to make full use of your existing hardware (in theory). Parallels 3.0 has support for graphics cards and the possibility to run games like EVE. I really wouldn't suggest it though. Not for a MacBook Pro anyways. http://www.parallels.com/en/products/desktop/
Bootcamp is basically a software package that helps you install Windows onto your mac in a separate partition, think Linux in way. It also includes various drives to make the hardward in you mac (Trackpad, keyboard, mic, camera, and such) work under windows. You have to choose which OS to start-up and reboot to switch. As you are moving from Windows to MacOSX this may be your best option as you likely still have a Windows install disk available to you. http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bootcamp.html
VMware is another virtual machine application this is gaining ground. There is also CrossOver Games. However I would probably still say Bootcamp is your best option at this time if you still have a windows install disk, and if the only thing you plan on running online is EVE. No web browsing. http://www.vmware.com/products/
http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxgames/ http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=1860 (What they have to say about EVE)
Welcome to the crazy world that is gaming on an IntelMac.

To run premium you would need to run Windows through Bootcamp. This is not as bad as it sounds, but a little annoying be forced away from the superior Mac OSX while you want to play EVE. |

Eh eh...yeah....not being able to play Eve on a MBP is the only thing that could prevent me from bying a MBP. Your comment makes me smile |

I do. I loath windows. Installed xp through bootcamp, downloaded EVE, did some google searches for anything better to browse with then that virus attractor called 'IE' and within 10 minutes i had malicious malware on my partition. telling me I had 64 viruses, key-loggers and what not on my xp partition.

Sure, got no problems with it over here. iMac Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz, 4 GB Ram, running multiple clients simultaneously. |
