I know its a long way away, but are dreadnaughts at all fun? Does any one use them out of siege mode? To attack battleships or something? I'd rather a dread than a carrier because of the more direct nature of a dreads weapons
Are there any good stories (that actually happened in eve) about cap fights and fleets fights? Perhaps i'm just not looking in the right places but it seems there are very few stories about what happens when you get to play the "endgame" material.

Dreads are for shooting at a POS or at (preferably immobilized) enemy capships. They're about as fun as watching paint dry... well, the Moros might be somewhat fun, the "painting the fence" kind of Tom Sawyer fun.
Out of siege mode, battleships out-damage you by far (except the Moros, that one can deal respectable damage out of siege too, thanks to the drones). In siege mode (other than the fact you can barely carry enough stront for a couple of cycles), you're immobile and track worse than a pig on LSD with your cap turrets (so unless your target is either huge and slow or completely immobile, you'll miss most of the time) or you can have your (damn slow) cap torps nuked in-flight by smartbombs (if the enemy had the foresight to equip some).

Carriers are far more fun and enjoyable. You can do so many things in a carrier, such as hauling, and pvp - Pos stuff, logistics and repping, gate camps, and lv 5 mission runnig (if you find the right ones, and arent pirated :D)
Dreads really only have one use as the previous poster said - POS shooting, and if you're lucky...Capital shooting. Either way, theyre not fun. You're either in such a large blob that you're lagged to hell and back - Or you're in a small group, not lagged, but worried crapless, that you're stuck for 10 minutes with barely no defence. Either way, not fun. Just nessesary.
Imo atleast.

If you get into a capital battle, a Dreadnaught is great fun. Unless of course, you get targeted like me and lose a dread in every capital fight
Cynojammers now mean people have to do cap fights and I would strongly reccomend that if you are thinking about getting a Dread, I would advise that you experiance fleet fighting and nullsec wars first so you understand how exciting or boring a dread is.
Its 90% grind for the 10% epic fun in a dread. For some people thats great, for others its not. Before you start training for one, make sure you got a alt though, so you can have fun with that while your main is in a dread. --

To be honest, I've found firing at a POS in a dread far more fun than sitting on a gate guarding the op in a fleet BS. --- Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. - Emerson |

Disappointing to hear that they are no good against battleships. I would have thought that they would be like the cruiser/battleship relationship. Actually, disappointing to hear that they aren't fun. Well i guess i'll just aim for battleships then. Please tell me they are fun at least...

Battleships are fun, but like I said, you need to get used to nullsec wars to see if 0.0 wars is your thing or not. --

There are some similarities like cruiser/bs in bs/dread. Every size step the bigger ship has dificulties to hit the smaller and more agile target. The dread siege mode makes that like one step further (like a bs handling frigates).
There are also less modules to help the dread vs bs than bs vs smaller ships. BS already have the biggest neut and MWD. Than there is also the need for a cyno to travel.

Well, the Moros is nice with sentry drones and a huggin mate to camp exit points of stations which kick you outside of dockrange. Particularly now when they do it at speed, ha ha ha.

Dreads are not fun. POS shooting is not fun. Dreads make POS shooting last a few minutes instead of hours. So Dreads are less boring than the real boringness = POS shooting with BSs.

I am currently training for a Moros. Not necessarily because I want to fly a Moros, but because I happened to want/have the following skills:
Large Hybrid Turret V for T2 guns Advanced Weapons Upgrades V for uber weapon fitting Repair Systems V And Hull Upgrades V for peak armor tanking Gallente Battleship V for my Megathrons
Well, looking at that list, you have Capital Hybrids, Siege Module, Capital Armor Reppers, and roughly half of the Spaceship Command skills needed for a Moros. Since I wanted to get into a carrier at some point anyways (they're just too damned useful to not want), I figured, why the hell not just train the capital ship stuff and fly both?

Skywalker's Nag killed my Caracal back in my amazingly noobish days. I figured we had the guy, with 3 or so battleships, some interceptors and myself. Then I noticed a bright orange blob heading my way. . .

I'm not a cap pilot but I can attest to the BS side of this. If something's gonna happen, it'll probably be at the pos getting attacked. It always sounds like they're having more fun.

When the action starts involving too many pilots (like over 100 from each side) then dreads are certainly not fun but then again what is.
One of the most fun fights I've ever had was when we were sieging some COW(?) POS's back in syndicate and the node crashed (even though there weren't too many pilots in the system... less than 200). When the node restarted and I finaly got back on, i found myself to have auto-warped back to... a completely different POS than the one we were sieging (!), solo and ummm got tackled ofc To cut a long story short, I got out in the end, with only a few brave t1 goons having lost their ships (back when they had like 3-4capships total) but not until several hostile BS's where shot down in 2 volleys each. What a rush that was! Boink! |

Takes like 3-4 90% webs on a BS to slow it down enough for a seiged dread to pretty much instapop it. That experience is about two years old so things might have changed.
