well another question is, what you want to do with the gedon?
if you fly alone you can easily take out cruisers, but you don¦t have chances against other bs.
i use in my high slots 2 tachyons, 2 mega beams and 2 heavy beams,
med slots: sensor booster, large shield booser and a warp scrambler.
low slots: 3 power cap relays, large armor repairer, 2 power diagnostics, amplifirer 2 and a warp core stabi.
don¦t forget the heavy drones 
it¦s a good fitting for destroy cruisers but you get problems against other bs.

I'd put 1 large armor rep and th, em, kin hardneners (armor). lotsa mega beams and whatever you want =)

The geddon is obviously an armor tank, best one in the game except for the Imperial Apoc.

Yeah, shield tanking a geddon is a pretty screwy idea. Better to use the medslots for Cap recharger II's, and the lowslots for your armor stuff, hislots = dual heavy beam/pulse.

I took an Armageddon into 0.0 last time I visited, and did quite well against cruiser spawns, even when I landed smack in the middle of a 6 cruiser, 6 frigate group when warping into a belt.
If I remember correctly the setup was:
2x Tachs
3x Mega beams
2x Heavy Beams (Modals)
1x Auto-targetting System*
1x MWD**
1x EM ward
1x Thermal ward
6x Power diags (2x Beta, 1x Type-D)
2x Heatsink II
This was of course against Blood pirates. Didn't find any battleships to test it against, and not sure I'd want to take that setup against other types of rats.
* Didn't have CPU for anything else, and just didn't want to have the slot empty. 
** Just because I'm impatient. Disengaged it when I reached the hunting grounds.

actually geddon is a pretty bad armor tank. it can do the job, but its not all that great at it. typhoon and apocalypse are still in the lead.
Edit: forgot to say why - it has **** powergrid, running 2 armor repairs is a pain.
7xDual Heavy Beams is the best way to do this btw, so i would go with that.

The most useful armageddon setup:
7x miner 2
2x co-processor I
6x expanded cargohold I
Allows for a good deal of afk time while your hold is filling with minerals. You don't have to drag-and-drop every 5 seconds.

I don't see how you reach this conclusion. The Armageddon has 12.5 TW grid. This pales in comparison to the Apoc's 15 TW, but it's still considerably better than the Typhoon, which has 9.5 TW grid. Neglecting weapons and other cap drains for the moment, the Armageddon also has superior cap to run the armor repairers/hardeners than the Typhoon.

armageddon uses 7 guns, typhoon uses 4 and 4 launchers. to fit those guns, arma needs several RCUs or diags

And the arma has an extra lowslot. I dont recall having grid problems with 7 dual heavy beams and armour tanking kit. Been awhile though.

I have read many forum posts now regarding Geddon set up am a little dissapointed to discover that to get the most out of it i am going to have to fit it out with Rails. Surely with a laser based ship with laser bonuses this should not be the case. It seems to me that ccp need to take a look at how lasers work - else no one will be using them

I flew a arma for a time. It's a great NPC hunter, and it can be pretty decent at PVP but it's not that great. I had no problem armor tanking it with 7 pulse lasers, but it lacks in the mid slots. Also remember it has a decent sized drone bay so they are important also. Apoc is still better at armor tanking though so if you want a laser based BS for PVP Apoc is better IMHO.

7 dual heavy beams.
an EM and thermal hardener, and an XL shield booster.
8 capacitor power relays. 
With uber skills you can get that setup going indefinently. But thats really just a crazy tank. For PvE its great, but for PvP you can use a bit more damage--add two Heat Sink IIs to the low slots.
