The player base is getting older (in game terms) and the 'value' of isk is decreasing. IE more people have acess to more isk than they used to. Couple this with diminished prices for GTC's in isk and more people were paying their subs with in game currency.
CCP make less from GTC's as they're sold in bulk to resellers, so real world profits were hit by in game market activity.
To try to get some of those profits back, CCP changed the GTC system.
I think that about sums it up.

Obvioulsy, since biogas fuel is supposedly making foodstuff around the globe raise in price, feeding the hamsters has become increasingly expensive, hence the price rise. Boink! |

not a valid answer: the GTC ISK prices are not fixed. If the conversion of isks -> dollards decrease, so, the GTC cost, in isks increase.

The prices for GTC's in isk have dropped and more people have access to more isk than in times past. Hence more people can afford to pay their subs in isk.
You're looking at it from player perspective. Yes the change will mean people will get less game time for their isk, but that doesn't change my point on why CCP have implemented the change. Less people paying subs with ISK means more dollars for CCP, and with this change CCP also get a larger slice of the GTC pie. Hence, they'll make more money.

Ermm...false..to CCP`s profits the isk/gtc is irelevant since the GTC has a fixed $ price...so CCP gets the fixed ammount of $/GTC then the reseller ..umm ..why should CCP care what ISK the reseller gets?

Perhaps because of all the people buying ISK and then buying GTC's for cheaper.
say GTC = $14 or 150mi ISK 100mi ISK = $8 (depending)
Which means you can get a $14 GTC for $12 or even less if you buy larger ISK values.

They're rising GTC prices, and ONLY GTC prices (CC-paid subscriptions remain the same) because selling GTCs was actually losing them money compared to having regular subscriptions paid (even the "cheaper", longer-term versions). The reason is that they were barely making 12$ on a 30-day GTC, compared to 15$ for non-europeans paying with CC one month at a time, or aprox 13$ from 3-month at a time CC subscribers... or, compared to the EQUIVALENT of 19$ for EU players (23.5$ before VAT, aprox 19$ left after Icelandic VAT) for Euro subscriptions... and they were barely making a bit over 11$/month on 90-day GTCs, which was even worse... and a LOT of European players started using GTCs (semi-illegally purchased with USD from US companies like ShatteredCrystal).
Translation ? For European players, they were losing almost HALF of their potential revenue in the worst case scenario, and for non-EU customers, they were losing aprox 20% or so.
They can't hike prices up for USAmericans (the majoritary non-EU subscriber base) because they're whiny little girls when it comes to things like that, even if they DO pay less than Europeans to begin with due to how much in shambles the USD is right now, even if VAT wasn't an issue at all. And they can't hike prices for Europeans down either for the exact same reason ("boo-hoo, they get a price cut, why you dissing America like that, I quit"). So, barring all of it, they had to do something about Europeans that were commiting borderline fiscal evasion by buying GTCs in USD, failing to report the purchase for VAT purposes (in most cases, it could actually be VAT-exempt, but in others, it probably isn't) and then either apply them or sell them for ISK, or even sell them for Euros cheaper than local retailers could afford to.
And THAT is why GTC prices went up in USD.
As for why 30, 50, 90 and 100 day codes/cards had to go woosh (and create a never-before-used 60 day code/card instead)... you either don the tinfoil hat and come up with some "bad CCP" explanation... or you take their word on it, that it was simply too much of a logistics nightmare to handle different "sizes" of ETCs/GTCs.

it just means the gtc sellers will end up with more isk as more cards will be needed. not really a balance at all

More isk for a GTC means fewer people will be able to sustain paying for them with normal in-game activities so they will need to use cc or other means of payment. So, less GTC trade (hopefully)

It could just as well mean less ISK for USD, which is a GOOD thing And no more "hmm, should I buy/sell 30-day GTCs or 90-day GTCs, and for how much ISK?" - you only have 60-day ones now.
