I mean really, now a days cell phones have quater sized cameras with 8 mega-pixals and color...
weird.
I believe the current trade-off with regards photos in colour or b&w on space vehicles like this one is that of detail versus prettiness. These craft need to transmit loads of data back to Earth and the developers spend months figuring out how to cram as much useful data into a stream that is several orders of magnitude weaker than even an old analogue modem. So usually you get b&w pictures with incredibly sharp detail as that currently has more scientific value for the project and is a more compact file.
Edit: Looks like I was wrong. If they are using the Odyssey orbiter then they seem to have a ton of bandwidth. Another article here. Although I think my theory on b&w pictures being higher contrast and therefore more valuable for this sort of work still holds true.

Yes, contrast and definition probably are more useful for this probe's research than it's cool factor.
PS - oh, come on, FF thinks probe's is spelled incorrectly? Haven't they heard of possessives at Mozilla?
PPS - Oh, I see they acknowledge Mozilla. Bastards.

Monochrome images tend to be approximately 3 times the resolution of colour ones for single-sensor cameras due to colour cameras needing 3 pixels (one each colour) for each single pixel.
the cameras on board the lander here are also specialist cameras operating in IR and UV wavelengths (or is it near and far IR? - I'd have to look it up) so getting a true colour image would be impossible, the pics on the nasa site now are approximate colour images made up of composites of the mono images shown at first.

Almost all color images you see from the Mars rovers had their color added later.
That aside, this reminds me how awesome it is to be part of the first generation that can see pictures from fracking Mars.

Not to mention they actually still have remote controlled vehicles running around over there. I mean altogether we have 3 satelites, 2 rovers, and a lander taking notes. Pretty awesome.

I believe a technique they use for color images is to take multiple monochrome images using filters and composite them together.

It doesn't. It drills up the samples and examines them as best it can, beaming the data back to earth. The probe and the actual samples aren't coming back... ------

Its good to see things going well for nasa for a change.
I wounder in x years time when we manage to get there in person, if we find out little robotic friends.

Kickass.
Now if only we weren't in the Iraq "war" and how many billion dollars more could be spent on NASA.

None. War time or not, NASA is never a very high priority for the US Government. America is moving away from civillian space exploration and buffing up the Air Force to handle it. In fact, it's one of the first areas where funding is cut to redirect to anywhere else.

Yeah .. The stones and sand look awesome. Like did you see that one black rock right besides the Grey rock.. We have more or less unlimited amounts of hydrogen and yet we don't do more in space. space exploration is confined in the suppression of progressive energy technologies.
