I decided to try and fit a medium clarity ward I in my merlin frigate. It fits, not well, but it fits. The thing is it gives 86 HP every 3 seconds for 60 energy. A small clarity ward I gives 26 every 2 seconds for 20 energy.
I know small is meant for frigates and destroyers and medium for cruisers, so I was thinking the shield boosting power of a cruiser would be a good thing. Considering I often run out of cap. in PvE battle, I'm thinking this set-up is a bad idea now. It could regen the shields slightly faster but it costs more capacitor to do it.
thoughts?

It might work in some oddball bait fitting in PvP, but in PvE you're going to want something at least semi-sustainable.

Fitting "oversized" tanking modules can often mean you can tank a lot more damage than you're "supposed" to, however it usually comes at a cost - either in terms of cap stability (as you've found out) and/or severely limiting what else you can fit on a ship.
Generally, oversized passive modules work better than active ones, as large active modules just kill a small ship's capacitor dead in no time. However, fitting an oversized shield extender (or armour plate for armour tankers) can work quite well, as long as you have good enough fitting skills to actually get some weapons and stuff on there at the same time.

1) No point in trying to overtank frigate - it will be squished in PvP anyway, especially if its active tank. 2) If PvE, you will have no cap for the booster anyway. Its like buying an industrial 7-feet diameter fan to cool your computer. --- Redesign local/scanner feature - make the place huge, dark and scary again! |

If you wish to tank a frigate via shields, your best bet is to chuck a medium shield extender on. That way your getting lots more effective hit points, whilst saving your cap for your MWD, which will stop you getting dead :)

I've tried a med booster on an AC thrasher once for PvE and it worked pretty well. Not sure how well it will work with frigs though, was gona try a crazy merlin setup with one but never got round to it.

the med shield extender if you can fit it work. I went 3 small and a after burner on my little merlin and one civ repairer and a missle damage mod in the low good to go in missions even the crusiers at the end of the first set only got a small dent in my shields. so far so good

A repairer is an uberstupid choice in this case. What you gonna use it for? fit a shield power relay. --- Redesign local/scanner feature - make the place huge, dark and scary again! |

Well this works OK in assault frigates but that's about it. The jag is famous for being able to have a serious passive tank. It's still nothing to write home about compared to a drake but it is decent compared to any other assault frigate. Dual Medium Shield Extender II's. But you have a seriously expensive rig and you need to sacrifice the MWD for an afterburner to do it. Due to the lack of web/scrambler you can't use it for PvP - it's PvE only.
