I just read the following at http://www.mutablerealms.com/
Quote:
Defining Ultra Massive Online GamingÖ Wish is the first Ultra Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (UMMORPGÖ). "Ultra" means that Wish supports more than 10,000 simultaneous players in a single, seamless world, without any zones or "shards".
But Eve-Online already supports 10k players....

well.. if you read on and look at their definition of ultra, they are speaking about "this genre"...
now, i havent been everywhere in eve, but i havent seen any elves, dragonkins or gnomes (well at least not many ) anywhere in this galaxy.

Thier claim is that the stargates in EVE 'shard' the eve universe. They are using incorrect terminology there though. What they really mean is that the stargates 'zone' the eve universe.
Wish claims that you can seamlessly walk from one end of the world to the other, meet every single person playing the game, without anyone waiting for a load screen.

As i've stated in the past: you cna make anything into "the first" or a "world record" if you catagorise it enough and use your own definitions.
Given available data it looks likely that EVE will go down as the first true (3D)MOG in terms of the various recognised online timelines.
Numbers of players is largely irrelevant (except for PR purposes) and on a historical basis. The significance of eve is that it is single instance - anybody who wants to run that down to genre is doing little other than fluffing their own PR pillow.
No big deal.

The only records EVE may ever break are ones for 3D UMMOGs.
I used to play a UMMOG game called Planetarion a few years ago, which hit 180,000 players at it's peak in it's third round. It was browser based and I'm sure there were other brower based games which had many more users than Planetarion. __________________

Wish doesnt use zones like EVE does. It is indeed a seemless world, which EVE is not. You have "nodes" in Eve that house various systems and if you jump from one system to another, you are crossing the "zone border" possibly being transferred to a new server.
In Wish you can run from one end of the world to the other without ever seeing a loading screen other than at login (which does not take long). Technically Wish uses zones aswell, you just dont notice them as you cross them without loading, much like UO did with the "server borders". EVE is not an UMMOG - Wish is.

I never talk about MMORPG, I usually just say Massive-Online. Meaning 100+, Ultra Massive Online (UMO) might be fitting for games with 10000+ so why not.

i'm pretty sure most people get an allergic reaction to any new fantasy MMOG that is coming out... i for one can't stand to see another goblin in a MMOG. ever.

Gobble gobble gobble.
I'd agree with whomever said you can classify yourself as "the first" anything if you specify enough criteria. I, for one, am the first person in the ENTIRE WORLD to have lived in California, had a job at Jack in the Box at 18, have a g/f named Katie AND be the only son of my mother named "John"...
So see? I am VERY unique in the massive real-world, too.
In EVE? Pfft. I am fodder for rats testing new missile launchers. |

There is no loading involved in a gate jump you are moving through n-dimensional space which has a small but real time component. Traveling through this space causes systems to behave oddly especially the camera drone.
So there we are eve is just as Ultra as anything. The loading screens are a feature and are simply your ships computer informing you that its systems are returning to normality. ______________

Agreed, I was never a fan of fantasy MMOGs, but they do seem to be the ones most people go for. You can pretty much guarantee that World of Warcraft will become the biggest 3D MMOG of all time on the day of its release. __________________
