I have been away for a couple years and when I left most rats dropped canisters with loot.
When they rolled out salvaging did they drastically reduce the chances of loot dropping if you donĘt salvage? I seem to only get actual loot on wrecks 25% of the time. More often than not I fly to the wreck (my kills) and open it only to discover nothing there.
I am not sure if I have just had very bad luck or not. Deciding if its worth training in all the skills required to get a salvager.

Given that salvaging makes up 25-50% of a mission runner's income, yeah, you should probably train it

Thanks for the feedback. When I left it did not exist yet so I didnĘt realize it was that big of an impact.
I will start training.

Belt rats almost always drop loot, but mission rats drop significantly less on a per-rat basis, because there are more rats.

Why are you flying to the wrecks to check if they have loot?
If the inverted triangle part of its overview icon is solid, it has loot. If the triangle is empty, then so is the wreck.
AFAIK, they did not revamp loot tables with any specific regard to salvaging, although there have obviously been changes made to the loot tables over the past couple years.
It is definately worth getting the skill required for a salvager, you will be out less than 1 million ISK, one good wreck can earn you more than that in salvage. The training time should not be an issue as there is very little reason to train the skill past level 3 or 4.

While you at it, have a look in your overview settings, there is even an option to hide empty wrecks completely.
They also change colors after you open them.
The whining about the incovience of looting wrecks verses looting cans got us alot of features shortly after they were introduced.

I would if I could, but I'm at work right now, killing time by browsing the EVE forums since things are extremley slow here (Working the night shift). Sounds like a very usefull option though.

Hehe, here at my job they have pretty much every site blocket except the ones deemed necessary for work during the daytime, but luckily they open up the blocks for the night time crew.

Heh, I remember cargo scanning wrecks in my old looting Kestrel to check if they were worth tractoring in or not. This was also back when Salvaging took Survey 5, so I didn't have it yet, so I had no need for the extra highs on a Destroyer.
I should mention that fitting a salvager to your general roaming ship can occasionally get you some nice bonuses when people leave unsalvaged T2 wrecks lying around. -------------------- ICE Blueprint Sales FIRST!! -Yipsilanti Pfft. Never such a thing as a "last chance". ;) -Rauth |

I wonder where that setting is? I only find the option whether to show wrecks or to hide wrecks...but this affects ALL wrecks no matter if they have loot or are empty? Somebody may enlighten me on where to filter out empty wrecks

I can't check the exact options as I don't have access to the game right now, but you need to look at the "State" tab - there's a box that says something like "wreck has been viewed by me".
I don't think that's quite the same as hiding empty wrecks, but if this latter is possible it should be enabled in the same location. |

There are very good reason to train up to and including level 4. Maybe less for a mission runner but you need lvl 4 for T2 and faction wrecks.

Circumstantial evidence from multiple people (including myself) suggests that salvaging level 3 is sufficient for salvaging T2 and faction wrecks.

Hence my advice.
Train to level 3 if you are casually salvaging, as level 4 only decreases the number of rescans needed from 85% to 80%.
Training to level 4 is advised if you find that you spend a fair bit of time salvaging as the increased success rate is helpful when you are scanning alot of wrecks. It is more important when scanning T2 wrecks as the success rate with level 3 is only 5%, and level 4 will double your success rate to 10%.
Level 5 is only for the hard core salvager. I would recommend fitting salvage rigs before training to level 5.
Thus which level to stop training at depends on how much salvaging you do: either 3 for light salvaging, or 4 for more frequent salvaging.
As another note: the success rate of your salvaging does NOT affect what salvage you will find. It will only affect how often you need to retry to get the salvage that is available, if there is any.
Each time you scan a wreck, you will get one of 3 results: scan failed, try again; scan successful, nothing there; scan successful salvage found.
The salvage skill and rigs decreases the frequency of "scan failed, try again" results. It does nothing to the ratio of salvage found vs nothing found.

Doesnt the Salvager itself give you an extra 5% chance at salvage? With Salvage level 3 dont you have a 20% chance?
