i was considering buying a new rig to play eve, i really would like to use two monitors each running one eve in windowed mode. Considering the new graphic card options of SLI / crossfire what would people suggest as a good setup. The options as i see it are
1x single graphics card 2x monitors - possibly underpowered? 2x single cards run in either sli / crossfire 2x monitors - i've heard sli won't run on 2 monitors in some cases and expensive 1x crossfire card like the 3780x2 or sli version 2x monitors - sounds like a decent option anyone tried it?
i'm intrested in feedback if anyone has tried these options etc
Thanks

Edited by: galactic bandit on 29/05/2008 10:04:38 Quickly browsed at an atricle about linking card's the other day, the results they got from the ATI card's was disapointing to say the least, the new 9 series from Nvida had the best dual boosts, i think the 9600gt (ú120ish) was ranked fairly high. A dual set up with that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg.
Altho im not sure how running dual screens will change the results (lower them i guess?)

thanks for your replies

I happily run a custom resolution 1600xsomething on my 22" widescreen TFT and the 1152 weird resolution on an older 17" TFT both in premium and windowed mode with thanks to a single 8800GTX.
You can use things like EVE launcher if you like, but I've found it's quite easy to setup custom resolutions in the nVidia control panel and if you have two seperate EVE installations they'll remember which resolution to use

You can run up to 3 monitors on any 8 series Nvidia card and above. 8800GT and above should provide enough juice even for some beefed up resolutions. If you intend to buy a monitor that handles a resolution above 1920x1200 you need to use the dual-dvi port built in your gfx card. I would suggest at least an 8800GTX in that case. There is no need to go SLI or dual cards. (Double the heat, double the issues, so and so performance gain depending on the case).
You do need to consider however the overall computer performance: a 2,5 Ghz dual core CPU so that the CPU does not become a bottleneck for your gfx card and at least 2 Gbytes of RAM. Hope that helps.

It doesn't, just had a corpmate griping about that the other day. OTOH you should be able to give each client its own card if you don't sli.
My rig: p4 3.0 (single core! omg), gf8600, 2mb RAM, winXP. I run 2 windowed clients on two monitors, both classic gfx, one @ 1280x800 with sound on, the other at 1024x768 with sound off.
Can get choppy at times and I wouldn't do it for pvp or even missions if you paid me to, but I can haul and mine simultaneously at decent sized ops without much trouble. Dual monitor setup is definitely a nice way to go, and given my rig/ performance I'd think you wouldn't have to go too terribly balls to the walls to get something pretty comfortable going on.
Re: CPU bottleneck. Since Eve is really just a terminal, how CPU intensive is it? Ie, how much would MOAR CPU really help? ___________________________________________

He wants to build a new rig. This is not about Eve necessarily, but I suppose he'd also want to use it for other purposes as well and other games. All hardware sites agree that a CPU of a minimum 2,5 Ghz is needed to provide enough overhead so that the present day high end cards don't get slowed down by it.

Right on. I'm not much of a gearhead when it comes to computers so free advice is always much appreciated. ___________________________________________

i was considering the AMD PHENOM 9850 BLACK EDITION AM2+ 2.5GHz 4MB CACHE, it looks like the 8800GT(S,X) is the way to go.
Does anyone know off the top of thier head which is the top performer 8800 GT, GTX, GTS?

GTX > (GTS == GT)
IT depends on which GTS card you buy the GT > 340mb GTS, but i belive it is close or on par with the 640mb GTS

Dual-monitor setup on one GFX card can work very well - seems to me that even with the premium client, CPU is the limiting factor.
My important specs are: Intel Core2Duo 6400 (2.13 ghz) 2 GB ram Nvidia 7600 GT
Until recently I ran 2 premium clients in 1280x1024, on different monitors (22" and 19") and it works decently - frames are not impressive, but it works. Main issue is that both cores are running 100% at all times, so I'm not sure its the GFX card thats limiting my fps in this case.
I've recently added a second gfx card (8500 GT - yes, I'm cheap) to run a third client off a third monitor, and so far it looks promising - although session changes (jumpgates/undocks/etc) takes ages, and slows the other clients down a fair bit. I run plenty of level 4 missions like that, although my third client usually hangs out at safe or a pos, handing out gang bonuses.
Also, if possible, its a good idea to put the clients on different harddrives - if one client suddenly gets the HD grinding, the others won't suffer.
