Quote: Top 20 Influential People in Massively Multiplayer Video Games of 2007 Announced [...] # 2. Jeffrey Steefel, Executive Producer, Turbine # 3. John Smedley, CEO, Sony Online Entertainment # 4. Hilmar PTtursson, CEO, CCP
I don't want to sound even more like the EvE-fanboy I am but:
Turbine Inc. released Dungeons and Dragons Online in 2006 - a game that never really grew to an extent to consider it either a success nor being a good game set in the D&D universe, given the awesome game-system and huge story-potential. I'll not even get into bugs.
In 2007 they released Lord of the Rings Online which was considered PvE-grind (try it and see what you do once you reach the level cap. It's just... grindtastic - like "achievements" on x-box games) set in the Lord of the Rings universe (atleast some parts of it) and did not just feature an astounding lack of innovative gameplay but also did not require to create a setting/backstory, major art or anything other besides level- and quest-design and code-work. Yes, harsh opinion but other game companies create more from scratch.
Let's take a look at Sony: So basically the guy who managed to create such "successful" games as Matrix Online and killed Everquest 2, StarWars Galaxies and Vanguard amongst others games his company runs/manages is more influential than the guy from CCP who creates a steadily growing game(community) and started without the backing of a large international company? I have got to give them credit for hosting and handling payment for Pirates of the Burning Sea though - a game they did not develop nor fund.
I'll not argue about the Blizzard guy on top since it's a commercial success and a solid PvE-game (if you dig PvE that is).
I'd like to read that article and see the reasoning behind their score.
tl;dr: List is fail.
Enjoy reading top-lists,

Yeah, but Smed belongs on that list. He is one of the most influential people in MMOs. His influence is bad of course, having turned SOE from the industry leader to the industry poison.

I dont play MMORPGS, they are for nerds so I only have a sketchy knowlede of Star wars online etc BUT
I would say that (according to your post) a guy who has singlehanded bummed over two games is actualy yes very influential.

Originally by: LetsDoThis And that list is 100% wrong, its the players of renown that are the most influential.
A game is nothing without players. Believe it or not players drive the trends of gaming not CEOs of video game companies.
The events and memories of great achievements that put MMOGs on the map, that is what drives the direction of the genre. The players that make a difference on the MMOG communities are who should make that list.
I ask you why, why Chribba is not on that list.
Take a moment to google chribba.
Yes...you obviously need players to actually like and buy the game, but that's most of it. WoW certainly benefits from all of the great UI modding, but that is only made possible because WoW allowed it.
CEOs/developers have to combine all prospective players preferences, along with their own about what their game should look like. They need creativity, marketing ability, design ability, and so forth.
But I'm with you that the list is dubious...I don't eve know how they measure influence? In terms of news media attention, WoW is a clear winner so the top 20 people in WoW should make up 50% of the list. In terms of early influence, the SOE CEO and Richard Garriott should get higher rankings. Also, what about MUDs?

To say Smed burned down SWG, EQ2, and basically everything else would be a gross understatement.
More like burned down, then froze, then thawed with a thermonuclear blast.
SWG was the most egregious example. They deleted basically 2/3rds of the game, put in a combat system that looked like Benny Hill that 2+ years later STILL doesn't work, took away all significant choice in character development, and gave away the equivalent of Titans to first day players (while nerfing them down to the equivalent of an Ibis). 250,000 subs (about what EVE has now) crashed into far less than 50K over the succeeding months, all the while Smed blindly stuck to his "vision" while players left all the while screaming for their game back.
I was one of them. Glad to finally have found another game.
To show you how clueless Smed is, he even went on Slashdot and said that the NGE was the game to challenge WOW for supremecy... (laughs uncontrollably), when in fact, it's considered the most cataclysmic mistake in the history of the industry.

Edited by: Espae on 03/06/2008 05:03:24 I almost choked when I saw Sanya's name on that list.
Are they smoking *****? Have they actually talked to her past the point where reasonable people begin to see through the smoke screen? I have worked with her, and she's got the art of BS down pat, sure, but other than being popular in the small circle of has-been MUD people, what exactly has she influenced in the MMO world?
She loves to claim that she invented this feature, or that way of looking at things in the industry, but if you sit back and think, most of that stuff is well known in other industries and nobody else would have the cajones to actually try and claim they "invented" it.
Interesting that both she and Mark Jacobs, who fired her from Mythic, are on the list.
He's another one that is full of hot air and arrogance, and is highly overrated. Mythic's success is despite Jacobs, not because of it... ask any of the senior managers that have left that company, and they'll tell you Rob Denton is the brains behind the operation. Quite a bit of effort is spent hiding crap from Mark so that he doesn't decide to play game designer and ruin good ideas.
Really, Starr Long outta be up there a bit higher on the list, definitely higher than Koster (who is lots of talk and not a lot of results).

Edited by: Paeniteo on 03/06/2008 05:23:51 I can't believe Sage Sundi is so low on the list. FFXI - refreshing & original perspective on how a fantasy MMO should be, great story, extremely well refined graphics & animations, at least half a million subscriptions (people rarely make new accounts for mules), regular events and expansions, etc. etc. Tbh FFXI really broke a lot of molds and deserves a higher place than some dork who did D&D. It's vastly different from the run of the mill fantasy MMO's out there.
Sage Sundi's team are also working on a Crystal Tools MMO which is bound to be pretty damned influential one way or the other. I would place Sage up there with Hilmar, easily.
Yeah a lot of people jump of the final fantasy bandwagon but truth is I don't like any other FF games at all. FFXI is bloody tops though. I've tried just about everything and FFXI and EVE were the most captivating if only because they were original. The only issue I have with FFXI is you need a very well put together group to grind anything.
Anyway, this list = suspect as they come.
