Well I've been thinking of starting to train Deep Core Mining for some time now. And since I've heard this and that from alot of different people in-game, I thought I'd ask in here :) So is it worth training Deep Core Mining as a Miner/hauler? And could someone specify what the pro's and con's are.
Thanks Arvakr, Manager Contract Mining Industries

I'm not a miner, but from what I gather it's a definite NO. This because Deep Core mining yield (aka Morphite) can be recovered in big enough quantities from high-end ores anyhow.
But, then of course, if you are a miner you probably want Astrogeology at level 5 anyhow, so why not? Might be good for future use...

I am/was one of the fools who wanted to specialise in DCM... but in their infinite wisdom the Devs made it so any ol' miner, whether he trained Deep Core Mining or not, could get Morphite from 'regular' ore (i.e. Dark Ochre, Arkonor, and Spod). As a result, the amount of Morphite entering the game from 'regular' ores makes DCM a complete waste of time and skill points. The hassles involved in mining and refining Mercoxit is just not worth it.
I trained the DCM skill and Mercoxit refining all the way to level 5... about two months of training time I should have spent training something useful
So to sum it up... I'm a Deep Core Miner who sold of all his DCM lasers, deleted all his bookmarked Mercoxit roids, and now strip-mines scordite and pyro for a living back in Empire space.
Sad or what?
Next time CCP hint at more specialization in-game, they better actually THINK about it instead of implimenting sh!te like DCM.
You want the pro's and con's? I'll start with the con's...
* Mercoxit ore can only be found Deep in 0.0 space.
* Mining mercoxit causes pollution clouds that eat away your shields.
* You can't use mining drones on Mercoxit roids, and can't use combat drones to defend you while you mine (due to the pollution clouds).
* 1 DCM laser litterally eats your CAP. You can only fit about 2 to a thorax and maybe squeeze 5 onto a Megathron.
* Each laser yields a mere 1 unit of Mercoxit per minute. So at max you can probably mine 5 units/min (using a Megathron).
* It takes 250 units to refine.
* Mercoxit has a volume of 40... so getting a refines worth to a station is a job in itself.
* When you've finally got enough to refine, you now need to get your Morphite back into Empire to sell - again, avoiding PK's and alliance blockades is a job in itself.
* When/if you do get your minerals back into Empire, you'll have a job selling 'em since the demand for Morphite is negligable atm and theres so much of it already in-game the prices will remain pathetically low indefinatley.
Now the pro's...
* Your DCM lasers fire a blue mining beam at a rock instead of the regular orange beam
* Poulltion clouds are pretty to look at.
/Rant over.

thats a mistake thats gonna be corrected soon (tm) . if you are a deticated miner and mine in 0.0 idd say go for it might be usefull in the near future.... but if you're nto that deticated idd say no --- "this song reminds me of the girl i met on a schooltrip, she was really nice, and she really liked me. I forgot to ask her her phone number" - Nelix trist OMG im a pretzel!!! |

well seems like i have to get dcm then since the pro's are infact the uber stuff nah guess ill leave dcm out then since it seems useless on other than Mercoxit..
thanks for the input olag. Arvakr, Manager Contract Mining Industries

You can use the DCM lasers on any ore but it is totally inefficient, you would be better off using basic miners instead. ----- Sable's Ammo Shop at Alentene 5, Moon 4, Duvolle Laboratories Factory. Ammo at affordable prices. |

you confuse the decribtion of pyro ore. 'deep core REFINING also yields a little bit nocxium' this is just an empty roleplay phrase to explain the little amount of 11 nocx you get from pyrox 333 ----------------------------------------------- Watch my leet everchanging dynamic signature \o/ http://www.games-on.nl/~cu2moro/evesigphp/icon.php?blaat=.GIF |

DCM Skill gives a +5% mining yield per level for all standard mining lasers aswell

That would be nice but i reserve the right to doubt that, since the skill description says nothing of the sorts..

DCM is a total waste of time. I'm ****ed that I trained it, only to then learn that a first day noob with level 1 mining can get morphite from high level ores. To get to Mining 5/Astro 5/Science 4/DCM3-5 will take well over a month! Plus there is no market for morphite either! Maybe morphite reqs will increase for tech 3? GRRRRR!!!!
