Hey
Have been playing Eve since 2005, pure pirate flown and died many times. However I have since sold my character and bought another one.
This new character comes complete with many million skillpoints in industry and science, two avenues of the game I have never explored.
To be honest it looks incredibly complex, can any experienced builder sort of chap give me some simple advice in laymans terms how to go about building something: ie:
Buy X,Y,Z do this, and then do that, wait for this, come abck and voila you have buult something. Maybe the same for invention?
I am a complete novice here, and this aspect of the game is new to me and ergo exciting.
Thanks very much

I would very much recommend reading the beginner guides on the particular area you're interested in.
They can be found here:

Hey
My first advice is... to forget about production - at least until you know a LOT about trading
If you don't know what it worth producing and where you should sell to get a profit... then production in itself becomes meaningless (or, at least, an expensive hobby).
But once you know what you want to sell where, then you can start on the actual production:
To produce an item you need A) a blueprint and B) some raw materials. Sometimes you also need special skills.
Blueprint A blueprint is the "recipe" on how to produce the item. It lists what raw materials you need for production and what (if any) special skills you need. Blueprints come in two versions: Originals (BPO) and copies (BPC).
A BPO can be used an unlimited numer of times and can be brought off the marked like any other regular item (but sold by NPC corporations). When you buy it, it has a "build in" design flaw so you waste a bit of raw materials and use a bit extra time producing the item. To reduce the material waste you have to do some Material Efficiency (ME) research on the BPO - find a station with ME research lines and put your BPO in the queue for research (specify what ME level your BPO should be researched to). You can do the same with "time waste". This is called Production Efficiency (PE) and use a similar research-mechanism - Most, however, don't bother with PE research.
Production When your BPO is researched to a good ME level, you can start producing from it: Find a station with production lines. Get the raw materials needed for the production. Right-klick on the BPO and select production (and how many units you want to produce). After some time the production run is finished and you can "deliver" it to your hangar - The BPO and the produced items is now in your hangar.
BPC You can make limited-run copies of your BPO. These BPC's has the same ME and PE level as the BPO (and cannot be researched further). They can be used a number of times equal to the number you specified when you made the copy, but otherwise works as a BPO. BPC's is sold via contracts and is much cheaper than a BPO.
Invention Invention is a far more complicated process where you take a Tech I BPC (note BPC) and turn it into a Tech II BPC via a very expensive and chance-based process. I suggest you put invention on hold until you are comfortable with Tech I production and then come back to this forum and ask again.

Also, if you are truly going into inventing.... a nice stockpile or original blueprints is a must. Because you can eventually sell those copies and use them for T2 prints (which need...a whole lot of stuff from here and there...). In true mass production...you might want to have many similar prints, but I myself only have one original print. There are enough prints to use in manufacturing... Of course this changes when you find that "money item"....but...you might still want to have that pirate alt ;)
