Quake? on a moble? Why? Why integrate complex games (complex here meaning uses more buttons than a single D-pad) into a mobile? I'm begining to think that they crossed the boundry between genius and madness here, the desktop PC is allready giving off the telltale sighns of beccoming second class to the laptop (which admittedy I bought because I have wanted a laptop since the late 90s) and it feels like mobile phones.... well should just be the phone/camera/gps that knocked up an iPod and had the resulting hybrid on market.

Wouldnt a power user be better off... I dunno, using a Laptop as opposed to a mobile for using word?
First person to say "battery life" should go look at some methanol fuel cells for laptops.

I cant always carry my laptop around, i have my ipod touch my n95 9gb and plenty of 3d games compareable to a ds, they are using alot more buttons than a normal d-pad now but its got the built in maps and gps which are quite handy and video support of avi mpg and so forth and the softwares updateable fully so it really is like a mini low spec'd computer.

Convergence is a nice idea, and most of the stuff seems to work ok. That is, if you are happy using second rate stuff for every device (with the exception of the phone itself maybe).
A dedicated camera is better than a phone-camera no matter how many megapixels you cram in there.
A dedicated mp3 of the same size is no doubt better than a phone that also plays music.
Messaging, email, internet, wordprocessing can all be done better, faster and more comfortable on a laptop.
GPS. Alright, I'll bend a little here since phones are triangulated anyway.
In short: nice if you want lots of things in one device that's easy to carry around, but remember that you are sacrificing a lot of quality.
Also, complex non-handheld games on such a thing is ridiculous. It's nice to know that the processing power is there though.

I cant always have access to everything i need but my phone is usually always with me so it servers pretty well atm although i still prefer films and music on my ipod touch. The games are pretty decent alot better than the older phones. If i know im going to do somehting then ill bring a dedicated device etc but its always there if i need it and it never lets me down. Eventually they will get to the stage where an item doesnt have to sacrafice quality so much.

Edited by: 7shining7one7 on 03/06/2008 13:20:51 because the designers and the workers at mobile companies have to distinguish themselves and make new and different mobiles all the time or they won't get payed. the problem is that by doing so cellphones are not cellphones anymore but bridge with many other mobile devies, in seeking innovation cellphone companies have forgotten what cellphones are, in order to get paid.
the bad thing about it is that some attempts will render high priced series of devices with superfluous features that most won't need (like the high end gps phones which are handy but expensive and how many times do you use a gps on a phone exactly as opposed to getting one for your car when you actually travel far/fast enough to warrant one), or that has so little usage that the only reason to use them is for the occational random "i can do this on my cellphone" thing. such as playing quake on it.
the good thing about it is that the more they push the envelope in order to bridge them with capabilities of other devices the easier it becomes to make smaller and more integrated multipurpose devices, and ultimately, everyone gets better, handier and more user friendly stuff.
but currently, it's still more feasible to have 2-3 different mobile devices that each handle their area of expertize marvelously instead of a very expensive all in 1 device that handles each area moderately, untill the r&d costs have been covered and the prices can be lowered to a reasonable level.
it's a good start though. just buy what you need instead of what the companies say you need

Thats interesting, but I rather have a larger bulkier PDA with most those features rather than my phone. My phone is used for communication and the occasional podcast, it has all my phone numbers, sends text messages, and has my address book. My PDA (when I get a new one) does my document storage, GPS, word and excel, photos, music, solitaire (a must have), internet, date book, detailed address book, games, and more. I had a Zire 71 and got an external IR Keyboard and Documents to go for it. I did my summer school English on it because my laptop wasn't working. It takes a bit to get used to the smaller keyboard, but its way faster than a cell phone.
Its rather interesting they have that much power in a cell phone, so I'm wondering when I can run XP on it and install EVE, that would be very cool, albeit slow and probably kill your battery, but fun still. -------------------------------------------------- Everyone is born right handed, only the great over come it.

I currently use a Sony Ericsson K850i which is the cybershot 5megapixel camera phone, i think its brilliant, it isn't quite as good as a normal digital camera but then im not a photographer i just want it to take pictures when im out and about with friends or family which it manages fine! Things like that are good for me. The only reasons i don't also use it for my music is that 1. the headphones aren't great and 2. it doesn't have the storage capacity i need (although admittedly it has a memory card slot so thats not a big problem), otherwise its brilliant at being an MP3 and video player aswell.
Not to mention that fact that with full signal i can browse the eve forums with Opera Mini (full signal for decent speeds), convergence is brilliant i have a device that can cover any eventuality, but we haven't reached the point yet where you can do without a specific device for some things, such as professional photography.
As for GPS? My phone doesn't seem to good at that, always seems a mile or so off.. but then its a free google maps service, which acts as worldwide sat nav pretty impressive to be honest, usefull for finding mates houses and such i suppose, but my Tomtom will always outdo it.
Pushing the boundaries of whats capable is always good, combine the wireless nature and new computing power of phones with experimental contact lense displays perhaps?
